What a remarkable man. No need to be coaxed out with questions. A natural raconteur. And what an extraordinary film. It ranks amongst the very highest tributes to the courage and sacrifice of people at war.
Lovely Donald Sinden great actor with a fabulous sense of humour. Cruel Sea one of my favourite films with the superb Jack Hawkins as well, 2 legends. Thank you 👍 x
I could listen to Donald all day long. What a gift.
Great film, a British classic along with The Dambusters, Ice Cold in Alex, Reach for the Sky and The Colditz Story. Donal Sinden - great actor.
Superb classic film, snorkers good ho, excellent film and many great actors , Donald Sinden among them
Like Donald Sinden. Was fortunate to meet him once. Just as he is in this interview. Was still surprised about the impact that The Cruel Sea had. One of my favorite films.
Donald Sinden was a great actor and brilliant raconteur.
The Cruel Sea is one of the best war films in my opinion. My old man (born 1933) went to see it at the cinema and said the scene where "there are some chaps in the water" was very controversial when it came out. As an aside, I worked with Nicholas Monsarratt's ex steward a couple of times when I was probably the youngest Corp of Commissionares.... commissionaire.
Great interview with a very good actor. Thanks for posting and cheers from Canada.
My dad was a regular in the Navy and amongst others served on the Malta convoys. The Cruel Sea still brings tears to my eyes because it shows graphically what my dad and all the others in both the RN and MN went through. God bless them all.
Fabulous! What a charming personality, very amusing too. Many thanks!
This interview from a wonderful actor just adds extra colour to the best British War film ever made.
This is precious - absolutely brilliant and droll ! Loved it !
What a fantastic interview, I just updated my old VHS copy of the movie to a new DVD and this interview was on it. Great storytelling and a fantastic insight into how well made those movies of the time were.
What a wonderful man and discussing my favourite film and book
One of my favourite war films. Great story by a charming actor. Strange that he should mention Stanlely Baker in the scene of the sinking of the Compass Rose, because Baker only appears in the first part of the film, well before the Compass Rose went into action.
He obviously enjoys telling a good story and embellishes or is confused about some details since it was about seventy years ago now.
About 2/3 through The Cruel Sea (novel) and looking forward to watching the film. What a delightful interview with Mr. Sinden. This will make the film even more enjoyable. But that’s not the right word, is it? The novel is poignant, heartbreaking and all to realistic. Clearly some of the scenes captured exactly what Monserrat experienced in his time on convoy escorts.
Wonderful Actor 👍🏴
My favourite film, and one of my favourite actors
Great movie, I've read the book several times.
Before phones, humans could read, write and speak.
My father served almost 4 years on Corvettes in WW2
He said the movie was very accurate.
I'm grateful for his service. Tough job.
Monsarrat served on corvettes, then went on to command.
Donald Sinden was a True British Gentleman and a Class Act. Equally at home with Serious or Comedic Roles.
R.I.P❤
There's almost a touch of Frankie Howerd in Donald's presentation here. But that's no bad thing - both heroes of mine. The slight forgetfulness of old age. He can hardly be blamed, it all took place a long time ago. But truly a classic film with accurate portrayals of what it must have been like.
Delightful Gentleman.
Nice felllow. Great observations. I just love this film.
Donald Sinden was a great star during his acting career.
what a marvelous warm recount of stories filming i found this thrilling and and enjoyed his dont tell anyone ha
A shame neither ship was preserved. The only corvette is in Canada.
BBC2 just player this today and it’s a fantastic movie. I’d read the book (which I recommend as it’s absolutely gripping l) but hadn’t seen the film. Didn’t realise it was Donald Sinden as they all look so young. Denholm Elliot is also in it looking very young and dapper.
Lovely interview, IMO...thank you...It is such a shame that the British DVD of this film is not compatible to DVD players in the U.S.
Best war film ever made.
Film 9/10 book 9/10.monserat a master of truth.god bless you all.
The Flowers had only one engine when built, so it's no surprise the one used in filming had only one engine... It did have two boilers- perhaps Sir Donald means one of those wasn't working.
I think that’s what he meant
Sorry Donald, it was a 1953 British war film
My favourite film
This is how I imagine all British naval officers for some reason. What ho old boy!!!
I love this film with those great actors, as the film DAS BOOT from Germany. I hope, I´ll found it in a german version
Canada has preserved an example of the class.
The film ends with the ship anchoring. So clearly all the crashing into destroyer footage was not used.
An Amazing film!
If you have ever read the book, a realistic book, you will understand it all - It was was a really cruel sea - those people saved Europe, against all odds..
Great movie . Wish I could find it
Great interview, but I hate to break it to him that corvettes only had one engine.
He's full of bullshit. If he had "no interest in filming whatsoever" why did he go and do screen tests for example.
@@MagicTammi Simple, money, get it.
@@jimclark6256 You don't get money for screen tests.
Therefore if he did screen tests and took the part, he *did* have an interest in filming, be it for money or any other reason.
@@MagicTammi Bloody rude. Unpleasant.
True only one engine, but it was fed by two boilers so that's where the confusion probably started.
Were can I buy a video of the film compose rose.
The film is called The Cruel Sea,about the Compass Rose, just read the book and watched the DVD.
H M V go there and you can buy the video.
'Saltash Castle' rhymes with hash!!
An elderly Boris Johnson
If he had no interest in filming whatsoever, why did he go and do screen tests.
If you had listened to what he was saying, early in the interview, you would know that the Director saw him in a play and asked him to do a screen test.
If you had no interest in listening to what Donald Sinden had to say, why did you bother to pitch up in this comments section and post shit like that? Twat.
Ignorant comment about someone who you will never ever come close to, you just make yourself sound small.
