- The JMC Shadow is a thing of beauty. This 'retro review' is about one of the bikes in Kieran Power's BMX collection: a chromed frame from 1982 featuring some design innovations that heralded a new era in bike design.
The genesis of this interview was a serendipitous meeting one weekend when, upon seeing a classic BMX bike outside a pub, I went inside to see if I could find the owner.
Kieran Power raced BMX in the late-1970s and early-1980s when the sport was just getting started in Australia. We share a common interest in bikes from this era and the discussion dived off on several tangents and included talk about the bike (of course) as well as Vans shoes, racing rivals from the 1980s, and Nicole Kidman's appearance at the track in Frankston, Victoria, as part of a promotions for the film BMX Bandits.

I have 2 jmc bikes 1 1981 candy apple red and 1 1982 shadow crome . . Will probably hang on to them until I die . Thanks for your video

I was co-sponsored by JMC ,had the same frame and fork , bullseye hubs(blue) chrome spokes ,blue nipples ,polished Arayas, Flight cranks, Blue shimano DS pedals, MCS neck, Darrell Young bars. Sold it with JMC bike bag (used for taking bike on planes) and all my gear for 250 bucks like a dumbass when I got into cars and going out at 18 (in 84) . I miss that bike so much and they are out of my price range now. Nice ride ,congrats
Thanks for the comment. Man, your bike sounds like my dream bike from 1982.
By 1983, I owned my own GT (the first generation with the 'oversize' tubes... which are tiny, ha). Still got that fella, still with the original blue DX pedals (very worn) but the spec changed a lot through my teenage years and it's a little bit of a miso-mash. Still, it now has the same bits and pieces on it as when I stopped racing in 1989.
Alas, it needs some work.
I'm going to show Kieran my bike and see what he can to do smarten it up.

Beautiful bike, great parts. Those Hutch bear claw pedals are the bomb, I always wanted them in the early 80’s. Thanks for featuring the bike.

Wanted a DY, but couldn't get my hands on one.
So I bought a JMC Andy Patterson new in '84. Ran it with DY bars, JMC 16" seat post, Hutch neck, Flight cranks, and Sturmey-Archer drum brake on the rear.
Best looking and riding bike I ever owned.
The JMCs were definitely lightweight, and looked killer. Compared to most other brands on the market, they were like a hand-built thoroughbred.

It's a great looking bike and really part of a frame design revolution in cycling.

I begged my dad for a JMC, they were like $400+ in 1982-1983. I got the Schwinn Predator Team-Z for christmas 1983. Was definately not a JMC but it had 3pc. Sugino cranks, ACS Z-Rims, Dia-Compe brakes, Suntour hubs I think and other semi-trick parts on it. I stripped the cranks pretty quickly for being an 8 year old. My neighbor had the 2pc bullseyes on his super boutique Bay Area custom BMX... Can't remember the name but I knew just by looking at it, that it was bad! Nice Build!
Nice collection.
I got 21 stitches just below my knee from a bear claw pedal on my JMC bike. I don't know if my forks were considered aero forks but the forks were very slim that matched the thin lower tube. Thanks for the video.

Lol this is the same bloke who used to blast around Mt Eliza and Frankston in the 80's in his G-pak Torana shooting out the windows of cars and houses with a slingshot

I have the bear claw pedals to with red skyway tuff 2 rims , cw bars
I had one with a american bottom bracket and a low serial number in high 600s.it had a fatter lower bar on the frame like a pk ripper...the jmc was first
