Salaam Khadija. I can understand how you are seeing this as contradictory. To me, it seems as though there are different levels in the path of spiritual development. We need to conquer and better understand ourselves, our nafs, and develop self-control to control it. Once we can do that, we start to see, that we are nothing, and that, we are all connected (hence, we, no me). However, controlling our nafs, does not mean, that we don't care for ourselves. The main point of the previous video was to shift from self-centeredness and self interest to connectedness and love for others, our families and our communities, and in this video, it's about taking personal responsibility for our lives. The primary goal of Islam is to develop a deep and powerful relationship with Allah Almighty, and this can only be possible by increasingly seeing He as the Cause, and avoiding the mind's tendency to blame others for what we experience.
