I don't have what they call a "Jay Lenno" car. So, I go with what I can afford, and looks decent.

What I used when I did my buddies 67’ I used ACE hardware brand paint, satin black. I have no idea who makes it for them, but I can say it lays down nicely. I did use the red oxide primer as well. I like the look of the satin, it’s got a lower sheen to it. The paint it in really tall cans and you get more for your money.

Hey Jeff, New to your channel back on January when I acquired a "C" code '65 Falcon Futura. In the past, on my '73 El Camino, I have used VHT Epoxy because it is a direct to metal paint (DTM) and is fuel and oil proof. Also it is very durable. The sheen might be a little on the gloss side but that can be adjusted with a Scotch Brite pan. Spray out some test panels to see what your likes are. Wayno from Ohio.

I use the VHT chassis and rollback paint. Very tough stuff and it sprays out beautifully.

I just used a Van Sickle oil based enamel in satin black. I used a foam roller and did 2 coats. Came out better than I expected. I also used it on my entire frame after cleaning and rust reform.

Recently did work in side the front wheel wells, cleaning things to a bare metal then used a Grey Rust-Oleum primer ( lesson leaned, to what Jeff commented on black primer would of made life much easier) afterwards using Rust-Oleum SemiGloss Black followed by Rust-Oleum truck bed coating ( in most areas) I’m pleased with all three all be it the Semi Gloss paint is a bit shinier than stock, or at least 53 year old stock paint; I’m pleased

Hi Jeff, long time since the last contact.
Engine bays, to me, I paint them to what the car is going to be used for. However, always (in Australia & the USA) I used a 2 pack paint as I want the finish to be resistant to what spills on it in that part of the vehicle.
Black primer is good advice for that area, but a lot of the time I have used the same red primer I use on the shell after the car had been blasted.
On cars I am trying to duplicate the original finish, I also have some exterior colour (Aussie spelling) on the rears of the shock towers, yes, I paint the engine bay on "so called concourse" cars last. Regardless, it is a matter of what the customer wants, the customer gets.
That goes for all out there playing with their cars, do your best and enjoy the results.
At the moment I am repainting our Mach 1 but leaving the engine bay all marked up as the aim is to make the car look like a survivor (although it has been restored, by us, some 35 years ago). Then to get it back on the road and have fun.

I just discovered that. In wiping down my 1980 Fairmont with acetone it wipes down to bare metal super easy

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  3 місяці тому

Acetone is a good metal prep cuz it removes any oils and greases but you have to be careful to go ahead and paint pre immediately because it will start to rust quickly

I like summit racing chassis shield semi gloss for a couple of reasons. It looks just right after it dries; furthermore, it’s an epoxy so it’s super durable of you spill gas or brake fluid. It’s also very affordable and easy to spray.

My locally available somewhat cheap black paint is Van Sickle tractor and implement paint. It's an acrylic enamel. You can use the flat black 473 71 with the hardener they sell or if you want a little more gloss you can use a super gloss hardener from a regular paint supplier and get more of a semigloss.
Not really the best deal cost wise for that paint but it is actually a good quality paint. The hardener is overpriced since it's being sold at a retail store and if you use it check the date as it may be old and the hardener is what goes bad quickly. If you have a good local paint supplier that carries more than just the big names then you can usually get better paint and more colors for roughly the same price.
I have a hard time using anything on a car these days that doesn't have a hardener added to it. I like the durability and the quick curing times.

There used to be a great semi-gloss available in quart cans called Black Satin. No mixing, just pour out of the can and spray. Like the others you mentioned earlier, it's no longer available.

I didn’t want to strip everything to absolutely bare metal, so for better or worse, I went with Por-15. If I win the lottery and can afford to give the care a frame-off restoration, I’ll do it right, but for now, it’s good enough. :)

Back in '91 when I restored the engine bay of my '69 Cobra, used the Krylon 1613. Thirty-two years later, still looks great. Yep, I painted the whole thing. I'd removed everything, including steering sector, wiring, etc. I found the Krylon matched original paint perfectly. Judged by matching "never seen light of day paint" under grommet for wiring harness connector.

Hello Jeff. I used Rustoleum "Canyon Black" on my tbird. Not on the engine bay, as it is the same color as the car body. But I used it on the rear axle, springs, fan blade, etc. It is a semi-gloss and is a pretty darn close match to the original color/sheen.

Jeff I painted my engine compartment with Rustoleum Semi-Gloss Black. And it has lost some sheen over the years. And +1 to using black primer. I used some red oxide primer when doing some touch up and I can still find spots in the daylight where I can see it - won’t do that again!
