Last January 2024, Maria Athisa Manalo was officially appointed by the Miss Universe Quezon Province to be their official candidate to represent Quezon Province at the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 competition.
10 most inspiring and interesting facts about Athisa Manalo as a person and a candidate.
1. Manalo was born in Candelaria, Quezon, to a Filipina-Spanish mother and a Finnish-Swedish father. As a teenager, she first experienced pageantry when she represented Candelaria, Quezon for the Miss Teen Earth Philippines in 2014. She did not make it to the Top 5.
2. In 2016, she represented Candelaria at Binibining Niyogyugan 2016, wherein she competed against 24 other candidates in Lucena, Quezon. This time she was declared winner, won the title and wear the crown.
3. A year after in 2017, she represented Quezon’s Niyogyugan Festival at Reyna ng Aliwan national pageant, against 19 other candidates at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. She didn’t win the title but was awarded the runner-up position.
4. With her vast experienced in provincial and national pageants, she’s confident to try her luck and compete for Binibining Pilipinas in 2018. She was able to impressed the organization and the judges nod as she was crowned Binibining Pilipinas International in 2018.
5. Her answer during the Q and A portion was one of the most applauded. The question asked her was: "How should a beauty queen respond to ruthless criticism?"
This is her response: “A beauty queen should always respond to criticisms constructively. We beauty queens are public figures, and we put ourselves in the position to be judged.
But nonetheless, we should always… filter which comments we should accept and what we should not.”
At age 20, Manalo was the youngest winner among her batch, during that 2018 edition.
6. Inspite of getting busy in joining thse pageants, Athisa Manalo managed to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation in Lucena, Quezon.
7. Since she was crowned Binibining Pilipinas International 2018, she represented the Philippines at the Miss International 2018 competition in Tokyo, Japan. She finished second and brought home the honor and sash of being the first runner-up on said competition.
8. During the coronation night, Athisa Manalo competed with a gown by a well known Filipino fashion designer, Michael Cinco.
On the Top 8 final speech, Manalo emphasized her eagerness to lead despite her youth, and vowed to continue being "the voice of the youth in showing that nothing is impossible with hard work and determination".
At the end of the event, Manalo finished as first runner-up to Mariem Velazco of Venezuela.
9. On January 27, 2024, the Miss Universe Philippines Quezon Province pageant announced that Manalo would represent them at Miss Universe Philippines 2024. Manalo is an LGBTQ advocate. An entrepreneur, with two food businesses in Australia namely Cafe Noun and Call Me Harris. Manalo also works with the Alon Akademie organization, that focuses on enriching the "global citizenship, social skills, and entrepreneurial mindset" of children.
10. In her stint with the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 competition, Manalo is one of the 5 or 6 frontrunners. She showed and proved her various attributes and qualities to be the winner.
She was consistently chosen by the judges, by the organization, and by the sponsors to be their winner and ambassador.
She excellently performs during the challenges and always have a positive disposition when promoting the sponsors’ products.
