    This shit is too funny man I had been researching a ton about these Helmets just this morning, See some data graphs about impacts and read some articles. Was interested but really wanted to see a review done by Van because he always comes through with the real shit. Couldn't find one and was bummed then I come home and BOOM it pops right up having been uploaded only uploaded a couple hours ago. Good stuff thanks again my dude

    Very good review, we appreciate the honesty. I’ve only heard great things about these lids such as safety features, quality etc. Helmet lift at speed is a big no-no! Unfortunate about the pin lock as well with the visor not being able to shut properly the way it was designed.

    Thank you for being honest on your review. Keep up the grat work! I was looking at this helmet but I think I will go for the tried and true brands for now, wait for 6D to fine tune everything first. $800 helmet no excuses for petty pin lock not closing properly and aero dynamic is not on par with same price range helmets.

    What I truly appreciate about your video is the raw unbiased review. What I got from is this might not be a great helmet for tracking at over $1BuckTwenty plus mph (120+++) but it would be a great option for street riding since yeah you might do your 100 plus here and there but not while driving near speed limitsl

    Thanks for the review Brian! I've ridden in 6D's off road helmets for years now over here in the UK and am confident that i'm still here because of their technology after many hard hits, I swear by mt ATR-1 and ATR-2's. Disappointing about the new street lid being so flawed. I hope they address these issues on their next generation street lids.

    Thanks for the review. This has been the ONLY review I have found so far that talks about how the helmet feels IN USE. Everything else has just been going over all the features and spec sheets. I've been searching for a new helmet for over a year that I like. Tried on tons of helmets but nothing feels right like my old Scorpion EXO-750. Tried this on, and it felt amazing. Doing more track days, and the lifting at speed sounds like a deal killer. Really liked this helmet too, but hard to spend that coin with that issue.

      You are welcome and thanks for watching! If you are looking for a high end helmet for track days I would suggest the Shoei X-14. My son Max and I are both riding in them and can say for sure it gets the job done. Vents well, almost zero buffeting and super quiet for how well it vents. - Van

      Following up. I ended up buying the ATS-1R after finding it on sale at a nice discount. I don't have the visor issues shown in the video. Mine operates with zero issues, like most other helmets I've owned. On track, I only felt a minor amount of lift, but that might go away when I get replacement cheek pads for a snugger fit. Helmet date is 04/2019, purchased 07/2020.

      @@sportbiketrackgear Actually, I hated the ARAI Regent X, that I mail ordered from Cycle Gear. Took it back to the local CG store and bought a SHOEI RF-1400 they had in stock. I could go on and on about how much better the SHOEI is. Even cost 30 dollars less. Thanks for the tip on not removing anything and not riding in the helmet so I could return it. One ride and it would have been my new 771 dollar ARAI helmet that I hated.

    I’ve finally been able to get a handful of track days with my 6D. I was wearing an X14 before that. What drew me to the 6D was a higher level of protection. I’ve broken two helmets in motocross, in one case cracking my skull in many places. Being somewhat older now, getting concussions is something I want to avoid. Protection is number one, everything else is secondary. The fastest I’ve been is 150s on the main straight at Summit. My helmet has no noticeable lift. The 6D presses into my face noticeably less than the x14. I attribute that to better fitting cheek pads in the 6D. I’m guessing I could purchase thicker cheek pads for the x14 to even that out. You can tell the 6D is a little bit larger than the x14 (both size large) when turning your head sideways. I do feel the x14 is more refined in its construction. I realize everyone can have different experiences. After many rides in each, I choose to wear my 6D every time even though I have both with me at the track.

    I have 2 of these helmets and I bought it due to its safety features and protection it will provide...no one I know is a racer or goes 160 mph on track days...most people who watch my videos are street riders, therefore need a helmet that's tested at various speeds/angles, etc. I've had no issues whatsoever and it's been over a year now. I never had any "lift" even at 140 mph at the track. Kyle Wyman and Cameron Beaubier use this helmet and they're pretty damn good professional racers. Plus if you put in "MotoJitsu" you get a 10% discount and a free tinted visor as well.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  4 роки тому +5

      Kyle and Cameron are both being paid to ride in this helmet. I am assuming you were also given a free helmet in return for your review and promotion of this helmet. My review takes into account my personal experience with all of the helmets I have ridden in over the years. Given it's performance I chose not to offer this helmet here at STG because it was simply not where I feel it needs to be given the price point. At this time I own and ride in almost every premium full face helmet on the market.
      There are several helmets on the market that sell for pretty much the same price that outperform the 6D hands down. Offering a 10% off coupon won't make this helmet perform any better. - Van

    Thanks for your honest review. I’ve been wearing the ATS-1R for almost a year. I have worn it while riding triple digits as well and have not had the lift problem. I suspect that it has a lot to do with the bike you are riding, your height, your position in the bike, and how these things effect air flow across your body. Different riders may have different experiences with this problem. You mentioned that Cameron and Kyle are getting paid to use their helmet. Maybe true but if they were having lift issues I’m sure that they would not continue to wear the 6D. Cameron could wear any helmet he wants and get paid for it. Have you talked to Bob at 6D about your lift issue?

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  4 роки тому

      When I do these reviews I use the experience I have riding in every high end helmet (that is relevant) currently available on the market. For me the ATS-1R had some shield issues (pointed out in this video) and had too much lift for my liking at speed. Why would you want to deal with that issue when you can put a Shoei X-14 on your head and have zero lift?
      Could I ride around the lift if I had a contract to ride in the helmet? The answer to this is 100% yes I could ride around it no problem if I were being paid to do so. There is not a ton of money in pro racing here in the US at this time. It is quite likely the helmet contract is more important to the riders you mentioned than you expect. - Van

      @Bingomandingo 3 роки тому +1

      I've also had no lift issues funny enough. Probably wouldn't care either ever since reckless buddy of mine who has experienced 3 crashes said that he felt like he had the worst crash when wearing his 6d yet it felt like it was a world of a difference with how much better it protected his head than his previous Shoei (rf 1200) and Arai (corsair v) helmets. Said that with his Shoei his head still felt terrible days after and with the Arai he felt alright but still worse than the 6d (it was his weakest accident). He still thinks of course they still protect you good but now truly sees no point in loyally overpaying for old tech and "features" that are seriously not exactly hundreds of dollars worth and frankly he sold me on 6D with that. Plus with all the talk about how concussions affect your health long-term.... I care about my safety more than anything tbh. If I wanted to add to it -- fit is good too and omg the ventilation, it actually hits the top of my head and makes me not dread riding in summer anymore - I love this helmet so much

  • @mikeMcoa
    @mikeMcoa 3 роки тому +1

    Brings me comfort to know that my Arai is still the superior helmet. With that said I to do think the safety tech is great but to many problems for the price. I guess when the years pass and they improve I’ll try one but only if they have a round oval version. My Arai Quantum fits perfectly on my head and at the end of the day a perfectly fitted helmet will do it’s job better than a expensive helmet that doesn’t fit as well. Seems like 6D makes their helmets for people with int-oval heads which is smart for the US market but still there are and always will be exceptions to head shapes and Arai solves this problem on a global scale. Again thx for the review and keeping it 💯

    Hey man, the 6D helmets are made in China, in the same factory that builds fox helmets except at an extreme price point. I am drawn to this helmet for obvious reasons but I am terrified of quality issues. Is this thing a Fox quality helmet at an insane price point? Is this technology a gimmick? It doesn’t seem to have been tested by anyone other than 6D. Why should I pay more for this over a Shoei? Thanks.

    It's a fair opinion. I think that's not the right helmet for a race. That's why it's a street helmet. Go check their website. And for that reason, with all that protection and suspension technology, it's the best street helmet currently available.

    Hi Brian thanks for the review! I’ve been living with my ATS-1R for about two months. I have the exact same issue with the pin lock visor unable to open without significant force. I literally have to hold my helmet down by the chin and use the other hand to open otherwise I’ll take my head off along with the visor hehe.
    For the non-pinlock it does close better, however I notice that if you close it too softly it will not seal all the way on the right side (opposite side of lift tab).
    For my particular helmet I feel like I had a potential quality control issue.. 1 week after owning the helmet, I decided to install a cardo Bluetooth system and as I’m removing the cheekpads I noticed the the foam liner on the left side was actually detached from the side wall of the helmet. I’ve had it sent in for repair under warranty twice. As of today the foam liner has come undone again and although they offered to repair under warranty again, I just decided to deal with it.
    Their explanation for why the liner is coming undone has in part to do with the aggressive/bulky clip from the Cardo PackTalk Slim (which they installed for me).
    Also in regards to the aerodynamics - noticeably worse then my Scorpion EXO-R2000. The protective technology like you said is unique and I thoroughly believe in its ability to manage that energy transfer in an event of a crash... but I think that is the majority of what the hefty price tag reflects. Premium tech, average helmet?

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  5 років тому +1

      You nailed it with your last sentence my man! IMO 6d just needs to focus on refining the performance of the helmet so it meets the level of the technology and they will have a winner. As it stands I do not feel it is worth the retail price, way too many other helmets at that price that out perform it. - Van

    It’s the safest helmet on the market, but just not for the racetrack because of high speed lifting. It’s proven to be the best at protecting your head from injuries but that’s not good enough to sell? Really? I’ve been riding my entire life, and I understand the issues involved with a helmet that has lifting issues at speed, but to not sell it is nuts.
    I do wish that all helmets had this incredible technology to reduce concussions. Hopefully 6D can hire some better engineers to design a better helmet, and retain the safety aspect.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  5 років тому

      I am choosing to not offer this helmet because I do not feel it is worth the $745 price tag. There are several options around the same price point that out perform this helmet. When this helmet lifts at speed it is distracting, losing focus while riding increases the odds of falling. 6d has some excellent tech and I hope they are able to sort this out and bring a helmet to market that performs as well as it can protect. - Van

    I appreciate what Brian does at STG, but I have to strongly disagree with the helmet lift comment. I went from an Arai to this 6d and I have had absolutely no issues with lift. The aero of the helmets feels right on par with my old Arai which is basically all I've ever worn otherwise, so I don't know how that compares to other brands. But the helmet has fit great, actually has a larger view port than the corsair X, and moves tons of air (very important down in Texas) so I think it's been great. I have not tried the pin lock shield so I cannot comment on that.

      I did not make any changes to see if that improved the lift. IMO riding with the vents closed or plugged is unrealistic. No one is going to accept having to ride around with the vents closed on a $745 helmet. - Van

    Thanks for the review. I'm really interested in this kind of technology for helmets. If it proves to be an improvement, like the airbag tech for the body, these are exciting times.
    Good to hear the fabric liner was comfortable. The previous generation street helmet, that was a knock I heard against it. Along with the ventilation not being very good. Sounds like they fixed that too. So, progress!
    The Pinlock situation should be a reasonably easy fix. Pinlock should be able to resize their insert to not drag like that. Seems a failure of Pinlock, and 6D.
    Shouldn't you be able to test your lift hypothesis by just closing the vents for a session? I know it's not ideal, but it would remove the incoming air as a cause. And point the finger more at the overall shape of the shell.

    • @sportbiketrackgear
      @sportbiketrackgear  5 років тому

      You are welcome and thank you for watching! IMO 6d should have caught both the PInlock clearance issue and the lift at speed before putting this model into full production. If this were a product I was developing I would like to think I would have caught both and made the necessary corrections.If you are going to ask someone to pay $745 for a new helmet it needs to be worth $745. - Van

As far as lift at high speed. I’ve never experienced such described lift. Cut through air, ventilates great. Sorry to hear you had an issue. Like said I have two of the exact one you have, medium (I’m a 58). Should give another chance to that brand. I find it a wonder lid for sure. And I am a helmet whore for sure.

      Thanks for sharing your experience which was different than mine was. I experienced excessive lift with this and the previous version when I tested it. When I test helmets I take several to the track so I can compare it to others I am familiar with. For me the lift created by this helmet is more than I feel to be acceptable and more than several other models currently available today. I love the tech in the helmet, the performance just needs to be better IMO. Too many other excellent options available at or below the $745 MSRP of this helmet. - Van
