Amelia, there's a post on HealthyPlace.com called "How to Talk About Your PTSD" at goo.gl/jsPKqb. It's more of an aid to help you describe what is going on with you than a simple, more generic explanation. I'm glad you found Dr. Croft's video helpful.

i was diagnosed with PTSD when i was 15. i started seeing a therapist & at first, thought it was useless. but i'm 19 now & i can definitely say that therapy has changed my life. it's helped my relationships with people (not fixed, i still have no idea how to trust anyone) but certainly helped. i understand that talking is healing. bottling my fears & emotions got me to such an ugly state of mind. if you've been diagnosed, you've got nothing to lose, give it a shot

I've been diagnosed with PTSD. You will know if you have it. I can't sleep I have nightmares. Every muscle in my body aches when I wake up in the morning from straining and moving in my sleep. It's a physical and an emotional battle.

I have PTSD. Watching this video makes me feel a little better. I feel like I am not the only one...I wish people would love us as we love this country. It's almost 1am and I can't sleep...and it will be like this for the rest of my life. I really miss life before ptsd. Thanks for the video.

I can relate totally. Same story here. I'm writing some childrens books. I hope that helps. And it would help even more if the kids love it! My self-publishing projects are NOT about the money but learning to live again....I miss the person I once was but my strength is slowly comeing back...I still have dreams. That's how I hold on. But it's still hard. Everyday I have terrible memories...

I was diagnosed with otsd, from rescuing a fligh attendent during severe turbulance on an international flight. I was the only one on board that flight who was able to help the injured. I know First Aid, CPR and the Heminlich maneuvor.. i was able to take a piece of glass out of her face that was so close to left eye, It could have blinded her. I relive that flight many times. And now I am in treatment.

Your subconcious remembers a vast amount of things that happened to you, particularly major traumatic stuff. These contain the triggers, that cause events to leap back into your concious thinking. Things that affect your behaviour, self-esteem, and emotional well being. Depression and dissociation can result. You have to control your thinking, and rationalise what is happening to you, and why you're responding as you do.

The only thing that helps is having 1 person you can really talk to and cry to who will understand and help you......I never found a family member or close friend that understands but had a great therapist, Its a very horrible thing to live with,,,,,

I'm a combat veteran diagnosed with PTSD. A stress-reaction is a normal response to an abnormal experience. I have nightmares about the military life I once lived. The abuses of the chain-of-command were equally as stressful as combat. The friendly-fire of those who are hyper-controlling, causes anxiety that adds to the enormous stress of combat. The abuses of war and of those who feed the fire of war, are too great to speak of. Military life is as unnatural as the war in my opinion.

PTSD after expousure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm you need a good Dr. Psychiatry and a good Friend or Family who give you hand to stand up again, it's long treatment you need to learn how to cope with troubling memories, and talk about what happend with trust people or your Dr. some people it take 2-3 years to get over it, you need to talk about it with counsellor and more acupressure, hypnotherapy, massage, shiatsu or yoga.

I have PTSD from an extreemely abusive relationship with anbusive fiance in the past as well as spending time with abusive family members the flashbacks never go away! I get drunk every night to try and forget my past. I cannot trust anyone anymore, I cannot get into a serious relationship anymore because I fear that person will be abusive towards me even though the chances are rather slim but those flashbacks just occur and trigger my anxiety attacks and meltdowns I want to beable to trust other people but I just cant, I dont think I can fall in love ever again because of this. It is a bad combo with having ASD the long term memories combined with this really sucks!

Its horrible because you feel like the quality of your life is so low that it isnt worth living anymore. You think that you are never going to escape and have feelings of impending doom! And as much as you try to remove your mind from it it just gets worse diging into your mind until you only think about it for hours and just feel that you can never recover to your former self.

I still have trouble hearing doorbells, am hyper-vigilante, and have nightmares. A home invasion by a serial rapist in my neighborhood caused long term problems for me. Although I was able to fight my way out of being raped, the attack harmed my sense of well being in any new environment. A recent change has brought the fears to the forefront once again.
PTSD is real, hard to live with at times, and hard to explain to anyone who hasn't had a life threatening experience.

The military has had a lot of names for PTSD, such as "Battle Fatigue," or "shell-shock" etc. Before that, soldiers who had trauma would often join monasteries, or become hermits, substance-abusers etc. There's just no proven effective treatment for it.

Your not alone. I don't have flashback, just can't remember some things happening. My bro thinks it is so weird. I get the shakes alot and it is very difficult to drive a car. Its been 11 years since Iran and I'm now starting to drive up to 45 miles away. I need a whisky when I arive but I can do it. Just can't stand another car near me. Yes noises will get to you. A roach running around the room will keep you up all night. I have a small dog and her breathing keeps me up. I keep my rifle close.

Reason I ask is you certainly don't have to be a soldier to suffer from it. I first heard about PTSD when a girl I went to college with mentioned her dad was being treated for it, they used to fly night missions in helicopters in close formation, and it was extremely stressful and dangerous stuff. I never thought ordinary people or civilians suffered from it, but they certainly can.

    • @simonpurist4499
      @simonpurist4499 10 років тому

It's normal fear of the worst, + experience of it: i.e. the mind naturally has the strongest need to avoid the most horrible incidents; and so when such an incident *happens,* then there's no satisfactory resolution to it.
And more importantly, each person's trauma is entirely subjective; i.e. one person can be traumatized by something that won't affect another person. For example when I was 15, I was in an accident as a car-passenger, that left me unable to drive until I was 35-- even though I was a bit of a daredevil on off-road motorcycles and go-carts, and I got into near-fatal accidents on them; the difference was that I was in CONTROL, and was fortunately always able to AVOID them through control. As a passenger in a serious accident, this didn't apply.
Like the saying goes, "what doesn't destroy me, makes me stronger;" i.e. you can gain useful experience from a crisis, if it's not traumatic; unfortunately, some misquote this to mean "that which doesn't KILL me, makes me stronger..." which isn't the case.
Whatever you do, do NOT hesitate to get diagnosis and treatment for PTSD; if it keeps you from driving, then have your insurance arrange alternate transportation for you, etc. Also talk to your therapist about possible driving-simulators, even violent video-games like "Grand Theft Auto" as a means of exposure-therapy.

So is there a difference between being traumatized and PTSD ? PTSD seems to handle about one or maybe a few severe experiences. But what if you are a police officer. 40 years on the force. Seen all kinds of horrible things like severe car accidents with deadly outcome, suicide, Picking up body parts from people that have jumped in front of a train, violence, being in life threatening situations many times. child abuse etc etc. You can handle it ''fine'' the first 30 years but the last 10 years you start loosing it. Than comes a very nasty divorce on top of that and you are left a wreck that can only get through the day with the help of a bottle of vodka and a bag of cannabis. Is that PTSD or is that something else?

I cannot diagnose what the problem might be. I suggest you talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Being traumatized does not necessarily mean you'll develop PTSD, but because you're self-medicating the symptoms and they're disrupting your life, I hope you do go ask for help.

@@healthyplace Thanks so much for the reply. I was talking about my father not myself. He is so much in denial that it is not easy to talk to him about it at all.. But we'll give it a try again. Thanks so much 👍

Strange, but as for loosing my 3 best friends in Afghanistan, I feel like joining them! Not necessarily, meaning that I wanna kill my self! They are now guardian angels for 3 familys and a few friends.

if you are poor there is no help for you.
if you are wealthy you can get help.
Instead of helping the poor I say we hurt the rich.
