The size of a snooker table really humbles you. when you first walk into that snooker hall, with your 10£ amazon snooker cue and rental balls in hand, you really see how insane it is to pot anything XD

I've loved most sports from a young age I'm now 43. Ronnie is the most naturally talented person I've seen. His longevity is crazy and he shows no signs of slowing down yet. 7 x World champion, 8 x UK Champion and 8 x Masters champion, those are the top 3 events in the game. He holds every record that means anything. The game is unbelievably hard to play at a high level, but he performs most days like it's a walk at the beach.
Been watching snooker since the 90s and honestly it's been an absolute privilege to witness Ronnie playing, we're literally watching a master that I don't think will ever be surpassed
People used to say that about Hendry a few years back, someone better will always pop up at some point. At least I hope so, it would be sad if Snooker was forever dominated by Ronnie.
If we are being totally honest, Trump will probably destroy Ronnie in the century stats, he could potentially finish his career with over 2000 of them. Ronnie is great, but at their best others have also been great. Higgins has always been close to him, but others will also come along.
China has been churning out top level players at a steadily increasing rate for a few years now, it's only a matter of time before they produce the Chinese Ronnie
U need to play to understand not only his potting ability but more importatly his mastery at cueball control..thats what sets him apart

Being a british person (38) you always see snooker on tv thru the year, sometimes the same giys from 17 to 50+, and im still blown away by the 99.52% accuracy from basically every player
It is crazy now. I played and watched when the Hurricane was just getting started and there has been some great entertaining talent along the way. But now it is often don't miss snooker, they leave one showing off the break and its take a seat and read a book.
Should watch some Alex Higgins & Jimmy White best shots.

Jimmy and Higgins had some good shots but Higgins was more of a lucky than skilled player tbh, yes he won 2 worlds but as Steve Davis has said the standard back then wasn't really that good.
Ronnie is a beast. He once asked the referee what the price was for the maximum after he holed the first black. And guess what, he did it. He is the GOAT. Too bad this sport doesn't get more recognition outside of Europe

I've been playing snooker for 50 years. If you want to see snooker played to perfection, you must watch a match played recently between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Ding Junhui. World Grand Prix Semi-Final. Obviously too long for a reaction video, but for your own enjoyment.

Taking nothing away from Ronnie, but be aware that snooker is filled with a lot of talent. Past and present you'll find many players pulling off exceptional pots and snookers and escapes. Maybe some more than others.

The records speak for themselves, Ronnie is the best player ever. But for the most mind-boggling shots, you can't go further than Alex Higgins. He played shots with his head and his body on the move, completely outside the training manual, and still potted them. Alex was not the greatest player ever because he succumbed to his demons, but I believe he had the greatest talent.

Hey bro, thrilled to see somebody new to this discipline get into it! I grew up during the explosion of this game (the 1980’s) and was an enthusiastic viewer and fan and enthusiastic amateur incapable of thinking more than 2 shots ahead (if that lol). I’m from across the pond in Wales 🏴 (smallest of the 4 countries that make up the UK 🇬🇧 the others being England, Scotland and Ireland). Wales has though produced a World Champion snooker player in my fellow countryman Mark Williams. Mark is just 4 years younger than me, he turned professional in 1992 and won the SWC in 2000, 2003 and then left it 15 years to remarkably do it again in 2018!
Here is what Dennis Taylor (WC 1985) in commentary describes as the best match he has witnessed at the SNC at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield since it switched to that venue in 1977. So this is an hour of action from 2022’s semi-final between Mark Williams and Judd Trump. As you will note at the start of this vid Judd Trump is leading 14 frames/games to Mark’s 11, the match is best of 33 frames (or 1st to 17), Judd therefore only needs to win 3 frames/games to reach the final, leaving Mark needing 6!!

I'd contest that, People who know the history of Snooker & Billiards would put Joe Davis as the GOAT, over a 20 years period he only lost 4 times and only one of them was in snooker which was against his brother Fred. 15 times world snooker champion of which 14 were in a row then WW2 got in the way, but he won the first tournament back in 1946. He then didn't compete in the Snooker worlds after that date, i think to give other a chance of winning. He got the first recognized 147. He developed a tougher version of the game called Snooker Plus, with 2 extra color balls, one Orange (8 Points), one Purple (10 points).

I started to watch snooker in about 2003-2004, then I've gone back to 90s and some of the 80s to look at all the footage of big tournaments I could find on the internet, but I can't really say I have a good idea how good for example Steve Davies was at his absolute best. I have absolutely no idea of the level of play prime Joe Davis had, I presume it was significantly lower than today

I also really enjoy watching the safety play, seeing two players trying to outwit each other is always entertaining and some of the best shots you'll ever seen. Snooker is not just about potting the ball, It's also about making your opponent shot as hard as possible and hoping they make a mistake .
yes, being able to play a shot fron a difficult "Snooker" is the MAIN purpose of white ball control, knowing what spin will make the ball go where you want without hitting ANY other ball than the ""playable target". i have seen a few games of snooker where BOTH players played to leave thier opponent snookered. damn long games, but WOW the shots that were made. from damn near impossible snookers. i played for many years, the "snooker hall" had 35 tables that were occupied for the ENTIRE opening time. and when comps were held, it was chaos. lol silent or nearly so, but applause was great.
As a brit, I have been watching various snoookers stars on the bbc and enjoying for around 35 years. What you have to remember about the difference between Ronnie, and other players, is other players (mostly) play left or right hand only. Ronnie plays equally well with both hands and you will see him swap to prevent issues that would restrict another player who can only play single handed.
It’s years and years since I played for the fun of it when the game was at it’s biggest 80’s-90’s and it’s an insane discipline. Like you’ve mentioned the tables are off the charts HUGE. And that’s just for starters. Playing for fun I could barely manage thinking beyond the shot in front of me, never mind thinking several shots ahead lol. There are SO many variables, it’s s science. There’s cue control, cue power, angle and pace that you strike the cue ball and object ball, the numerous different ways you can strike the cue ball to try and control where it and get object ball finish up, safety play and snookers (the art of leaving the cue ball in such a position that you make it extremely difficult for your opponent to strike an object ball pressurising him into either a foul shot where he’s penalised and you’re rewarded points or he leaves you a potting opportunity), frames can often fall into a safety shot battle can go on for extended periods of time until one of you makes the error and let’s the other guy with a chance. From a TV viewing perspective this can come across as boring but for those with more than a passing knowledge of the game it is fascinating, all absorbing, in fact a huge part of the game is a mental battle. And it’s fascinating watching the guy that isn’t at the table, looking at his body language, I love to watch the players who are masters at poker face, my favourite being Mark Williams from my home country Wales 🏴 UK 🇬🇧 You’d swear on times he has ice running though his veins, so laid-back, unaffected by what’s happening in front of him, indifferent to good shot, bad shot, it’s helped him win the WC several times. 😊
The shot he made at 8:25 is incredible. people that understand the angles know how hard that shot was because he was so straight on the shot basically he had to force the angle in order to release the red from the pink. brilliant shot.
I think the best way to describe Ronnie to someone who has neither heard of him, nor heard of snooker is simply to imagine the greatest sports person you know of in your favourite sport, or just any great you know of. Ronnie is that. Ali, Pelé, Jordan, Schumacher, Tyson, Federer, Hawk, Serena, Bolt...name anyone you like. He is the "that person" of snooker.
The way you look in amazement at Ronnie's shots are what weve been treated to for years... 🚀 🐐
Watching Ronnie play snooker is like watching Djokovic play tennis, they both know the arena so well that they can hit precision shots and make the crowd say WOW!

Not only does he make the crowd say WOW if you listen to the commentators, these are guys with 30+ Years of experience and have witnessed Tens of Thousands of frames of snooker, most of them are ex World champions or top echelon players themselves and they too often are Wow'ed and amazed by Ronnie. Even the very very best of the sport, 6-time World Champion, 7-Time World champion, if you listen to them they are just as amazed by what Ronnie does as we the little folk are. That, to me, speaks volumes.

Both insane players in Their respective sports however, bit of a silly comparison. Djokovic Is brilliant but he's not the best in the world. He's not levels above everybody else. The same as Ronnie is when it comes to snooker The comparison is way off
If anything Federer is the one to liken him to, he played shots that nobody else on tour even played, when he was at his best he was unplayable like Ronnie.
I feel Steve Davis is more the Djokovic of the snooker world, just relentless pressure until the opponent made a mistake.

Ronnie and Efren Reyes are the greatest to lift a cue. Ronnie for me is the greatest of all time.
Watch Efren Reyes playing snooker. Then you'll realise he couldn't lace O'Sullivans boots.
@@BertSmithLondon of course. Ronnie also could not play some of the shots that efren played regularly. But I do believe that Ronnie could have been one of the best in pool if he wanted to spend time at it. Two completely different games which a lot of people don’t seem to understand.
@@johnlarkin3020 I agree with you, Ronnie did go play 9 Ball but in the end that was fun for him, he did well in the Mosconi cup in his younger days, of the 3 best shots ive seen in 9 ball, Efren Z shot, Jimmy White 4 ball Mosconi cup, and Jimmy White 5 ball to 9 ball 1999 last 32 world championship vs Efren, there might be others but I don't follow 9 ball much

Watching someone like Ronnie O getting into his stride is pure artistry. It's a joy to watch. Sometimes players to demonstrations of trick shots, they don't impress, insofar as they are usually elaborately set up, you see far more skill in a tight game.

Ronnies always been a pleasure to watch, most exciting player ever I think.
When I was young watching guy's like Alex Hurricane Higgins and Jimmy Whirlwind Whyte, Steve Golden Nugget Davis etc they were the pinnacle of the game, then along came Steven Wonder Bairn Hendry and he was a special player but Ronnie is a true master magician when he is on it, no one comes close.
Stephen Hendry basically invented the modern game himself, and he still has one of the best records as a snooker player.
For Years the game was played a specific way. Sure there were outliers but generally it was played with a heavier emphasis on safety and tactical play... I know, I know, there were high breaks and all that jazz but to a large degree the game was more of an old boys club mentality. Then Hendry came along and tipped over the apple cart and changed the paradigm. The old-school boys had to ....get off the pot so to speak or get run over, scuse the pun. The game changed from methodical, by-the-book methodology to a new-school, seat-of-your-pants style. Hendry was so good, had such a great eye and all around game that the old guys were staring slack-jawed.( In Martial arts Bruce Lee did a similar thing with the traditional Japanese and Koreak styles. To a lesser degree Royce Gracie did a similar thing with MMA). Then along came O-Sullivan, mercurial for sure, but in many ways he out-Hendried Hendry. and the new paradigm was born. Now we have >100 ranked players that on a good day can run multiple Centuries and if not for pressure anxiety could compete with anybody. The guys of old, great as they were in their day would have a hard time with the new-school players and we have Hendry to thank for it.

Baulk Line: If you haven't heard this term yet, that is the name of the line on which the yellow, brown and green are placed (within the "D" ). The cue ball must be placed inside the "D" to break off or take a free ball. When a ball is hit into that area it has been hit "into baulk." LOVING these vids!

Check out "Alex Higgins: The Impossible Break". Higgins was an absolute legend and was blind drunk most of the time (including when he did the 'Impossible Break', at least according to his opponent that day, the great Jimmy White). Many pros used to say that Higgins was the only player they ever knew to play better the more he drank, lol

Hi Jon. This is a very difficult point to quantify but I am a a similar opinion. For pure mastery of his craft he is arguably the best of all time of any sport. One thing is for certain in my opinion, if Ronnie shows up, is unencumbered by external mental or physical influences and he wants to win, he always wants to win but only sometimes WANTS to win but given those variables there is no one on Earth now, or has ever been, will beat Ronnie. Don't take my word for it, every single pro player, even Trump, Hendry, Higgins, and on and on, will say the same thing. They may not like things that he says but not one of them will contradict that.The very very best in the world, now or ever, will all say that when Ronnie is doing his thing NOBODY will or can beat him.
For someone who's just got into it, you're picking it up very quickly.

I've spent many hours watching snooker and it always fascinates me, but watching Ronnie is just another level. He has had bad days when he was too erratic but the vast majority of the time you know he's going to crush it.
The most amazing thing about Ronnie's escape from the snooker on the green is seeing a young Judd Trump and that cool haircut of his!
Ronnie can smash shots like that left or right handed… he’s a genius.
Keep in mind that a full-size, tournament-spec table is 12ft in length, and just over 6ft wide. Mind blowing skill.
And smaller tighter pockets thsn your local table.
The top guys like Ronnie can apply back spin, top spin, side spin and combinations thereof to bend the ball to their will…it’s awesome!

He is certainly a natural talent, but the skills he developed throughout his career come not only from his magnificent brain but also from sheer hard work. This guy has played thousands of hours of snooker throughout his life.
I'm an Aussie and completely snooker obsessed. Thankfully, it's popular enough here that it isn't that hard to find a venue with a full-size table to play and practise on. Pool is definitely more popular here, and is largely a pub game (the tables aren't nearly as space hungry). But I am surprised Snooker never really took off in America. Given how many great pool players there are in the US, I would imagine they'd enjoy the unique challenge of Snooker. Still, for myself, the advantage of years of playing Snooker on a 12ft x 6ft table is that it makes pool a piece of cake to play. Especially the 'long' shots 😅
Hello from Wales fella. I'm 66 now, haven't been able to play at all since 2004, due to cervical myelopathy. I began at aged 11, laid off from 17 to 21 but took it up again keenly and got to century break standard by the age of 23. Keep going, enthusiasm is all you need to improve your game.

So much is spoken of Ronnies talent but nobody ever notices how good his judgement is from knowing exactly how pacey the cloth is to knowing exactly what he needs to do and doing it with absolute sure confidence, the man just reads the table in a way thats so rare

Hi Ian. Your channel is so cozy. Always filled with curiosity, positivity and interesting things to watch. Also, switching to left-hand shots, wow, that's so skilled.
Great video! I really enjoy the videos of you playing snooker as well. I hope you make more of them. It will take some time before you improve your play and strategy but you can start with the following principles in order of importance:
1. ALWAYS try to predict/influence where the cue ball will end up. You will not improve until you constantly have that in mind on EVERY shot! Experiment with different spins, angles, elevation and power to get more knowledge about the amazing things you can get the cue ball to do. Over time you will have the knowledge and experience to employ the right shot for the situation at hand.
2. It is too soon to think multiple shots in advance like pros do but start with thinking 1 shot in advance. On your current shot always think about the next shot after you pot and do your best to "set it up". Once you get the hang of it start thinking 2 shots in advance then 3,4 etc.
3. If you do not have a clear pot and/or streak of potts (Break) it is ALWAYS better to make a safetly shot in a way that when the opponent comes to the table he has no shot or a very difficult shot which coul force a mistake (hide the cue ball/object ball or at the very least put distance between them)
4. Take on potts that give you a chance to continue potting. Sometimes that means going for lower value collors but having an easy shot after that and continuing your break instead of going for higher value collors but having no shot after you pot.
Follow these principles as best as you can (especially the first one) and you will start improving quickly.
Ronnie's cue ball control is insane.
Snooker is the 2nd hardest sport in the world for me behind golf. Good to see an American watching it and enjoying it.

There's some footage of Ronnie playing Nineball in the Mosconi Cup back in the day. Could be a cool watch. He teamed with the previous snooker GOAT Steve Davis in doubles at one point. Also faced the legendary American HOFer Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland in singles.

Loving your enthusiasm. Very much looking forwards to hear how you get on when you eventually find a table near you.
Take Into account the sheer size of a full size table and the super fine cloths they play on, meaning that you can miss any pot if you put a minimum trace of spin or are millimetres out on the aim and its easily appreciated on how good the pros really are and Ronnie is the greatest of them all, from what he's achieved and what he's still achieving at 48 years old.
Could watch Ronnie play all day,an amazing champion.
The left handed one was special because he was still on for a 147. Remember watching it live.

Funny thing is though he recently took over Stephen Hendry as most decorated snooker player, I believe they are tied on world titles...
Pretty sure you missed what he actually did there on the second clip where he potted the blue and how he got onto the pink.
Also towards the end when he pots the red left handed and screws the white all the way back down for the black, that was to keep a 147 break going!
Even though you are new to this a lot of us who play regularly have the same reaction to some of things he does: “Oh My God… HOW?!” 😂
Brother I grew up playing snooker billiards and more on big tables these guys are obviously high level alot of the things you're amazed by are simply just part of playing the game

I would recommended checking out Mark Williams, one of the most entertaining (and skilled) players of all time.
Loving your enthusiasm for the discovery of the sport. There's a certain boyishness about it. While many/most regard Ronnie as the most talented player to pick up a queue, the next close contender (who, like Ronnie, had his personal demons) was Alex "Hurricane" Higgins. Big figure in the 70s & 80s. Worth checking him out.
Some other important differences: Snooker pockets are 3 1/4 in. in the corners and 3 3/8 on the sides with rounded corners. Pool tables are 4 3/8 in. in the corners an 5 1/4 on the sides with flat edges. ( These measurements can vary slightly) Snooker balls are 3/16's in. smaller in diameter. All of this makes snooker a much harder game.
Compared to us mere mortals , all snooker players on the tour are excellent BUT there is only ever going to be ONE Ronnie O'Sullivan , he is unique and is the GOAT , The End

That three plant ball. Look at where the white went. Right against the far cushion in case he missed. Genius.
A lot of those were at crucial moments too, in finals of tournments or critical points of the match. I think you missed that a couple of those shots towards the end of the vid were for 147's too! The highest possible break, 15 Reds 15 Blacks and all the colours.
He is still world number 1 in the rankings playing for 30 years

Ronnie O'Sullivan would still be a top 10 player, maybe even higher if he only played with his left hand. That's how good he is.
The shot he set himself up for at 7:00 the frame was already won by miles. He didn't need to that, he does it because he can 😅
I would suggest other players too, Judd Trump gets some crazy movement on the cue ball.
