For the sister story, I'm going to echo others and say that OP did right: Her sister's mental condition is Priority One and _must_ be handled really quickly. OP did right by bringing her sister home ASAP, not calling the cops and pressing charges _at the moment._ (OP did say that she later called the police from home. I hope the charges stick)

(TL/DR at bottom) Years ago, I was attacked by a Karen. She saw my shopping cart had a loaf of fresh bread (not your typical “off the shelf” loaf. She asked where I had gotten it, so I pointed her in the direction of the bakery and where to find the same type of bread loaf as mine.
Later, as I was leaving after checking out, she came up to me in the parking lot and lamented that the bakery had just run out of the fresh bread, so she wanted my loaf. I politely told her “No. I already paid for this. It’s mine.” She tried to offer me what I had paid for it, I politely declined. I offered to take double what I had paid for it, and she got really angry and started yelling at me, calling me “Selfish”, and “Greedy”. She tried to snatch the bread from my bag, and I pulled the bread away. She tried to push me down and steal the bread, but I took out my pepper spray and aimed it at her (my brother taught me how to safely use Level 3 pepper spray). She backed off, and I finished loading my car.
Later, she called the police, after surreptitiously taking down my license plate (used her camera phone to photograph the license plate), and I was pulled over by the police, who claimed I had assaulted this woman and stolen her loaf of bread. I gave my side of the story and showed them the receipt for the bread. We went back to the store, and Karen was screaming at me, and demanding that the cops arrest me and give her the bread loaf. The police suggested checking the store surveillance cameras. Karen refused, claiming it wasn’t necessary. The police told her “We can’t arrest without proof.”. The store manager showed them the footage, showing Karen assaulting me and my pulling the pepper spray can and holding it up in self defense (but not using it). Karen was arrested for assaulting me, for lying to the police, for causing a public disturbance, and abuse of emergency services. Her husband had bailed her out and later she agreed to a plea bargain of a fine and community service.
TL/DR: Karen wants my loaf of fresh bread, it was the last one available for sale, I refused, she tried to steal it. I draw pepper spray canister in self defense, she backs off but later calls police and lies to them. I get pulled over by police, explain my side of story, police check parking lot cameras, truth comes out, Karen is arrested.

Unfortunately with the case of the autistic sister, the priority was to get the sister (who was having a shutdown) out of the store ASAP. She wouldn't have been able to handle waiting around for the police, then waiting even longer (and possibly having to give a statement then and there) before she could get home to where she feels safe and is able to decompress.
I say this as someone on the spectrum. It's great you want the lady to be charged and not get off easy (and I really hope she doesn't get off easy for assaulting the poor girl), but with the case of someone with a disability like autism who is already having trouble, it's just not feasible for them to wait around for the police.

I'm not a veteran. I'm about your same build. Anyone ever snuck up behind me or tried to touch my nether regions and, at the very least, they'd get a very sharp elbow right in the midriff very very solidly. The goods aren't for sale, rent or touching. One exception was when I attended a show in a pub/bar, when I was 7 months pregnant. It showed all in the front, but not from behind. As my girlfriends and I tried to get through the crowd to our table, some guys had taken up strategic positions to "cop" some free feels. I noted one guy ahead of me was focussed on the girl moving through in front of me, and I turned a bit sideways anyway (to not lead with my stomach, protectively). We got momentarily held up in our congo line through the crush, and Handsy Guy decided to feel me up from the back. I let him. Then his hands got around to the front and ARRGGGHHH. He dropped his hands away like he'd picked up a hot poker. Still laugh about that.

Not really messed up, no. They know full well someone isn't an employee. Because, how often have you seen the phrase "Then Karen went and got the manager"???? so why do people still insist on believing the Karens' lies? It's all a lie. It's a distraction. Maybe they have an offsider who is shop lifting. Maybe they're trying it on to get free stuff (usually always). But they ALWAYS know where the employees, the real ones, hang out. Always. And why the victims don't yell for security or a manager first, beats me.

Story two: I had a store manager ask me to do the shopping for an elderly customer. She told him it was just a few items. It was a few notebook pages, every single line on both sides After I was done getting every single item, she insisted that I grab another cart, so she could check off the items from her lists. I did it! She then had another "few items", which was another page that I needed to shop for her. The manager had been paging me throughout my shopping and asking what was taking me so long. I told him. He did not believe me until he saw the lists. He had me finish. He told her why did she say it was a few items. She insisted it was a few. He said items and she left it at that. She did not correct his assumption of it being items and not pages. After she gets checked out, she loads up the bags (over 12 bags) and walks out without the cane or limp. Her old lady wig fell off. He was livid and I told him never again!

Hey, Fluff. What Karen did in the liquor store was battery because she made “offensive contact with another person without their consent. In Indiana, where I live, it’s a misdemeanor and can get one 180 in jail. Usually assault is included, that would be a felony, and that can get one up to 2 years in the slammer.

  • @tabinagi

As I worked in a more specialty retailer for 10 years, I can confirm that some people do just come in with lists and expect you to find things for them. I worked my way from grunt to store manager and I've seen pretty much all the entitled behavior stories out there in person.
Think my worst example of anything (bad mother, entitled, etc) was a woman who brought her 2-3 year old son into our store. She shopped around for a while and I would say about 15-20 minutes in the son was pulling at her arm and hand on the basket and doing the potty dance. She ignored him. By the time she left, he had already soiled himself and was crying. When she stopped by the door and picked him up, he'd been sitting in his own filth for a long time. Long enough for it to completely soak through the diaper, his shorts, and everything else. There was a stream of crap that came down when she picked him up.
She looked down at that, looked at me and said, as she was walking out the door, "you can clean that up." I was livid. Since I was the closing manager, I took the cart outside and hosed it down. Luckily, most of the crap stayed in the cart and didn't really run or had a lot of splatter inside the store/on the floor. We did have to replace our front door rug and clean up a little bit around it, but that was really it.
Since I was a manager role/key carrier for 4 of those 10 years, I have a LOT of stories about entitled attitudes, people trying to abuse the system/employees, bad employees, really bad company practices, etc.

I don't care what corporate policy is, you don't treat people like that. For one thing, feces is a health hazard. Second, it is not your responsibility to clean up after a grown woman who refuses to take care of her own child. After all that, I would have found her name and address from store records (receipts, etc.) and reported her behavior to child protective services. You asked two questions:
1: The name-calling has nothing to with the person the name is aimed at. The user is using a slur that they hope will cause pain to the other person. Just like any other name-calling.
2: They think they can go around grabbing or slapping people because they do it to their family all the time and no one calls them on it or lays them out properly.
I have always believed the stories we see on these YT channels and read in the original Reddit subs occur when one of these people tries to treat a stranger the same as they do their family. It goes poorly for them because the stranger has not been conditioned to put up with her crap.
Finally, the 'victim' in these stories often self-identifies as shy, or afraid of confrontations, or being on the spectrum. These traits occur in these stories so often I suspect that the bullying personality somehow senses that these folks will be especially susceptible to their behavior. This is not 'blaming the victim', just that the bully may seek out people that are more vulnerable.
The fun stories. of course, happen when either they attempt to bully someone who is equipped to deal with them, or the Karen picks on someone who would normally be vulnerable but has a defender nearby to intervene.

Yup. I understand the desire to fight back and serve some immediate justice, but it's not a good idea in that situation. Hey DarkFluff,
While I do agree that in most cases, calling the cops right there is the best thing, OP's course of action was the superior one.
When someone with such a severe mental disability (such as her sister's trust issues) goes through something as traumatic as having your sanity/safety assaulted, it must be treated much like you would if you found your sibling half beaten to death by their SO: get them out, get them save, then get justice. Seeking justice first will only add abandonment to the trauma.

I have had people walk up to me in stores thinking I am a manager if I go into the store after work as we have a dress casual policy. I have never had a Karen encounter though. I did work retail when I was young while in college and encountered Karens all the time. Unfortuately for them, I am quite outspoken and have never had an issue dealing with them while keeping a professional demeanor. My manager told me that I have an uncanny ability to get the worst acting customers (many who behave badly everytime they shop in the store) to straighten up and act right. It didn't take the manager long to put me into the customer service department. It also didn't take long for the Karen custoers to figure out I was no longer out on the selling floor. What they didnt know but found out right quick and in a hurry was that when they demanded to speak to a manager, I was the one who would show up to deal with the situation. They would go from raging b*tch to sweet as sugar instantly.

Question for those in retail: do people just walk up to you and give you lists expecting you to shop for them?
Answer: yes. Absolutely. Though generally speaking it's elderly and in my experience they do tend to be somewhat nice about it. Example: when I worked in a grocery store we had a regular guy that would come in who was mostly blind and couldn't see to shop or walk around the store but was otherwise on his own with no outside help. As a courtesy one of our employees would generally help him around the store. On especially busy days he would wait patiently up front for someone to become available. He would keep his lists short enough to maintain himself for a week no months. And he always tipped whomever helped him. Example of the opposite side of that. We had another regular at the same store. Similar situation that he was disabled and on his own for the most part. No one really wanted to offer this guy the same courtesy however because he was morbidly obese and needed physical help much of the time to get in the mobile cart, tended to smell like he hadn't bathed in years, and because this old skeezy creep thought he was entitled to hit on our underage cashiers and made lewd commentary under the guise of it being a joke. I stopped sending any of my female employees out to help him when I was working, and when I had to do so myself and he would make these 'jokes' I would not laugh and tell him they're not in the least bit funny when he would try to reiterate it was a joke while simultaneously standing several feet back with my phone at the ready and a clear posture indicating I had no intentions on touching him at all and was only there to monitor in case he fell so I could call emts straight away (happened once. Guy ended up sliding to the ground instead of his car seat when he tried to transfer and looked at me as though expecting me, a barely buck twenty sized woman who also happened to be chronically disabled to pick his 400 pound plus ass up off the ground. I can barely pick up a toddler much less that.)
Moral of those stories? 1. If you need extra assistance you're more likely to get it being nice and not a creep. 2. Being served by someone does NOT entitle you to lewd commentary or actions with said server.

Now, I almost daily get someone going, "Um, where's the Shredded Lettuce?" (we don't have it with the salad bags). Thus, I point and say, "Just past the peppers."
Of course, when one is taking cardboard and trash to their compactors, I tend to get someone going, "Excuse me, but where is Item X?" Sometimes I'm able to look up at a sign nearby, and say, "Aisle Y." Other times, I have to say, "Sorry, but I'm not sure - I work in Produce." In this last case, I tend to advise them to ask someone who does work in that section.

If someone assaulted a disabled family member like that, I would go both criminal and civil routes. The additional attention and therapy required to bring the sister back to baseline would be expensive and needs to be covered.

"If I was in that position, I would have noped out of there so fast" well that's the plus side about stories like this, you, and infact most folks don't have to worry about being in that position because we're not crazy karens xD

Yeah I have PTSD too, if a Karen grabbed me I wouldn’t be shouting tho, whenever I go through hyperarousal (fight or fight) my body picks flight and I’ll physically defend myself.

I have PTSD as well from emotional abuse as a child. I've been very fortunate to have not been triggered into a physical response before. At my current age (54)and physical condition, I would try not to strike out. I would find the nearest object and throw it at them, though. I can't run, either.

These stories are so crazy. I’ll be in Walmart looking for an employee for help. I’ll see a person in the Walmart vest, walk up, quietly say “excuse me” and sometimes they turn and walk away. My reaction is, “Ope! Guess I’ll go find someone else 🤷🏻‍♀️”

I am surprised at your reaction to the sister not wanting to wait for the cops. With the type of issue the little sister has, the most important thing is to very quickly get them into a safe environment so they can calm down. Remaining in the store for the police would only make the situation worse for her sister. But she did get all the information taken and called the police later to file a report.

Story 4: WTH, bread is in the same place in every (large) grocery store in America (last isle across or after the Dairy Stuff).

Not even close at Meijer. It's between the canned goods and the soft drink section.

In Lucky it’s in the isles next to or across from the PB&J, which is in the isle equidistant between the bakery and the frozen cases. All the factory bread is there.

I was working at Rite Aid around 1999 on Christmas Eve. We were the biggest retailer for 40 miles in rural Northern California. So, we were crazy busy. The lines were like 15 people long. We also sold Christmas trees. There was something like 15 varieties. The customer had to remove the tag for the specific tree they wanted and bring it in to be rung up.
This young Karen is in my line and when it's her turn she says that she wants a tree. I told her the process. As she was leaving she asked if she could cut the line when she got her tag or so I thought. Being nice, I said I would allow it. While she was gone, I rang up 2 people and was finishing up with an elderly man. She comes back in screaming that I told her I'd wait for her. Um, no. So, I ring her up after I finished with the old man. After she pays, she asked about a rope to tie it to the top of her car. I told her that if we had any that it would be in aisle 10 (hardware). She screams that she should get rope for free. She demands that I look behind my counter. I'm at information where we stored tobacco. I was there nearly every day. I was quite aware of what was back there. I told her, "No." [Even if we had rope, I wouldn't be allowed to give it to her.] She yells/asks, "So, you're not even going to look?" Once again, I say, "No". She screams that she's going to call my manager and get me fired. I told her to go ahead.
The customers afterward expressed their sympathy. For the record, during the whole transaction with this woman, I kept the blandest look on my face and my voice was low key. One of the customers told me he would not have handled the situation so kindly.
The next day I worked my shift manager, Gary, asked what happened. After I explained, he said that's what he told the manager, Brett, probably happened. I never heard a thing more about it. Yeah, we dealt with some rude customers, but I never had someone other than her act so demanding. I never had someone push a grocery list in my face. It was always polite. I worked there for about a year.

Karen’s going to Karen until someone beats the Karen out of them. At some point you would think that by acting like that the only things that they are entitled to is a physical beating and jail time. At least that’s what I think fluff. Hopefully Steveo is enjoying the season and you are taking care of him

I was once in a major department store, in a designer area of the store. I was actually wearing the designer blouses at the time. A Karen approached me asking for assistance. I'm sorry I don't work here. Her response was so funny, "You really shouldn't dress like that when you're shopping!" Cute. All I could say was, "Thank you so much!" Had a good chuckle over that one.

I was confronted by an I've get you fired Karen. I told her that while I was not an employee, she could not get me fired. She was, on the other hand, a customer. If she persisted, I'd see that she was blacklisted from ever shopping in that store again.

Having worked retail for 19 years (finally got out just before 2020), I can say yes...some people do come up and give you a list expecting you to get their stuff, though it was not very common. Now in some of their defense they may be disabled in some form. The place I worked had some people who would handle such things. But as a general rule we declined and just gave them back their list telling them where things were. It was not a grocery store or anything as large as Wal-Mart or Target and didn't carry such a variety of randomness. So that could play into the infrequent times that we encountered it.
On the other subject of people just assuming you work places and not taking your word that you don't. I've had people assume I worked somewhere but in every situation they've acknowledged their mistake and went on their way. Sometimes you just have the body language and presence that makes you look like you "belong" and I suspect that's what confuses them.
I have no idea why anyone who actually did work for an establishment would lie about it. I would presume all the retail companies would have some rule on the books that doing so would lead to discipline and/or termination. The place I worked certainly did. So nobody in their right mind would dare try that, unless they were trying to get terminated.

"I don't work here lady" stories are my favorite. There's just something crazy about people who are so entitled that they can't accept the notion that they had made a mistake. Karens are crazy.

I’m a seven-year retail employee, the only times I’ve had someone give me a list or show me their phone with a screenshot is when they are buying something for someone else and either the person with the list/photo doesn’t know if we carry it or has no idea what it is.
My grandmother has done this before when trying to find Christmas/birthday gifts and she will write down what we want or have us write it and she’ll ask an employee if they know what it is and where to find it, but she does it very politely as she worked retail for 30+years

I normally just sit back and joy the stories, but you asked people in retail if customers just shove a list into your face and demand that you get the items for them. Yes, customers do it all the time. Thank you for the enjoyable stories Darkfluff and Steveo!
