    Anchor is amazing. How he deals with all this is amazing

    What chaos Philip Hayton had to deal with! Anybody who still thinks a newsreader's job has always been easy should look at this. At least today video sources can run from an instant start.

    This is a good analogy of a Swan. Frantic beneath the surface yet the part we see is calm. Makes you realise how great these presenters actually are. :)

    Because at this point they were using Quantel DVE gear, which was later replaced by Charisma equipment.

    Open talkback is the standard. Newsreaders don't get a choice, they are always hearing everything the gallery is saying.

    • @bobwilkinson2008
      @bobwilkinson2008 2 місяці тому +2

      Err, they do get the choice, a switch under their desk selects open or switched. The vast majority select open and only go to switched during down-the-line interviews to hear the interviewee more clearly. (I was there, shouting "we're on fire!" at 3:17)

    The "green typewriter" was the ITN News at One on ITV. You can find it here on UA-cam.

  • @dunebasher1971
    @dunebasher1971 12 років тому +1

    As fas as the green typewriter is concerned, you're thinking of the ITV one o'clock news (aka First Report, later the News at One). Search YT for "ITN News at One 1981" and you'll find it.

    Was the recording of this edition with talkback kept because it was such a shambles? lol. was there an enquiry into why there were so many problems? Having sat in the gallery during news i know its alway pretty manic but this is baaaad! lol

    Some newsreaders like "open" talkback (where they can hear everything), since allows them to see any potential troublespots in advance.

  • @davba2
    @davba2 15 років тому +3

    All newsreaders, whether they work for the BBC, ITN or any other UK broadcaster, hear everything that goes on in the gallery. They're on open talkback, not switched.
    This is necessary so that they know what's going on without having to be spoken to directly. I've worked on BBC and ITV regional news and a rabble like that over talkback is very common.
    In such situations, you have to take your own cues because the director is preoccupied with pulling the programme together.

    Poor Phil! Why are the animations called 'Quantel' and not 'Charisma' as in other BBC talkback clips on youtube from the same era?

    • @ajs41
      @ajs41 10 місяців тому

      Quantel was the name of the computer. I don't know why they used Charisma in other shows.

    OK, we're rolling, Q-gramms
    Closer from camera one
    Hold it, hold it
    That's nice, back a bit
    Camera two, cut to two
    Lovely, hold that, hold that, hold that
    Right, pan in on Ronnie then, come to Ronnie
    Watch the cello love, watch the cello
    Mind your boom - for blimey's sake

    A fascinating glimpse into how live television works. It seem like a shambles n the gallery, but see what goes on the air: it all looks OK. Now you know why on-camera presenters are so well paid.
    Anyone who has worked in a television studio will find something familiar here, but news broadcasts have to be the toughest of all.

    Back then, when Fingerbobs was finished I'd go out into the back garden and put a Smarties lid on a spider's web and then I'd get a slug and put it on the lid. Then I'd wonder why the spider wasn't interested.

    Is the open talkback standard in the UK because there was no floor director or stage manager in the studio?

    • @ajs41
      @ajs41 10 місяців тому

      Good question.

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 5 місяців тому

      Open talkback is common, but some have just a direct link between the director and the newsreader. Back then there was always staff on the studio floor. However the One O'Clock News back then usually had little people in the studio

    • @bobwilkinson2008
      @bobwilkinson2008 2 місяці тому

      In BBC News, open talkback was/is standard. Presenters always have the option of switched talkback but only used it during down-the-line interviews to hear the interviewee more clearly. There was one exception who always used switched: M.S., any guesses?
