AI translators are really, really useful when writing a business email. But the interactions I had with foreign people in their language were gems, and will forever be in my heart.

He is not talking about the present moment but in the far future. Like for example in 2060, 2070 or 2080. As long as technology continues to improve. Technology will eventually make langauge learning useless.

We need to move away from the “making things convenient” factor when it comes to AI doing everything. Life is about adventure and you get out of it what you put into it. AI doing everything is pointless and is counter to what life is about.

I think that no matter how AI translation advances, spoken language is the great barrier, because until the sentence is finished, it's impossible to translate, especially if, in case of SOV-languages, you don't even know the verb. So best case scenario, someone says something and after that, you'll get the translation in your ear.
That doubles the time every conversation takes, filling it with awkward pauses, killing the conversational flow. So, as much as guys like Elon Musk think Star Trek's universal translator will be a thing, I cannot imagine a scenario like that.

I have to say, whenever you post a video, I come running to see it. The discussions you bring up are never kept just on the surface level, but instead are well thought out and brillantly presented. The humility to leave a topic open-ended shows how you have escaped the dunning-kruger effect as well

Of course they will not. They may decrease the need of language learning for some people, sure, but for most other people they will help them learn a foreign language much faster. Just like you cannot explain the colour red with the colour blue, one cannot replace a sentence in a language with a translated sentence in another.

The A.I. aspect is interesting and it has tempted me to wonder if thst is an easier solution. It can help sometimes. People don't always want to stay at someone's else's phone and it is a bit more impersonal. I image that translators for business meeting will still be needed in the future. Also think about at places like the United Nations or Intelligence Agencies. Have a blessed day.

I agree, with the right mindset/responsibility it will be a great benefit to society for us to have the chance to communicate with those we may have never been able to communicate with prior or otherwise. However, nothing will beat the human nature of speaking the same language by tongue and body.

Its only a matter of time until AI translaters get good enough BUT its not the same as talking to someone in real time in the same language. I think creating a real bond with someone is only possible if they speak the same language. If you think about it, most people these days (in the western hemisphere) do language learning more as a hobby than a necessety. I think in the future it will be more a sign of respect if you took the time to learn someones language for real instead of only relying on a mashine. And for that, its not self-evident that everyone can actually afford this mashine. The people that would benefit the most from it will most likely be the ones that cant afford it (or it gets forbidden/restricted by their government)

when talked about the spelling I felt that
since I totally rely on spelling corrections in my writing - even in this very comment-
which I hate and I wish to not be the case
it makes me feel weak and lazy.
I think I will feel something similar if AI can translate that good in any point in time
I will use it but with a bad feeling

I often hear this sentiment of technological progress is always good and at first I sort of just accepted it and never really thought about it but the more I think about it the more I disagree. I think technological advancements are never just that and they always exist in a specific context and never in a vacuum; I believe its more helpful to reframe the issue - technological advancements are neither good nor bad, they're neutral until we decide the way we use them.
In the context of communication, languages are much more than just translating an idea or thought; it's about the essence of a culture, the essence of a specific lived reaity, the history of a people, the ability to invoke a series of complex emotions through the usage of 1 word in a certain context - for this end I don't think AI translators can truly ever replace that level of communication which is what truly makes human communication unique and the capacity to understand another person on such a level can only ever be acquired through an intimate understanding of not only the language but the culture, imho.

I don’t think AI will ever completely reduce the necessity of speaking other languages. Imagine being in a crowded restaurant of Rome (where I live) where everybody is speaking with everybody else (as sometimes happens in my city). The AI should track multiple people speaking at the same time. Maybe it will be capable but what’s impossible to eliminate is the time that will last between a sentence said in Italian, the time you need to listen the translation, the time that the guy you’re speaking to need to listen the translation of your reply. A communication like this is too slow. It’s possible to use it order a pizza but no one will enjoy a real communication wich procede so slowly.

I hope, even though languages will not be used the same way today as in the coming years, that there will be an advantage to knowing multiple languages. Words are the names of things. Physical objects, things are obvious. The cup is on the box. For abstract things, it is not obvious how they interact with non abstract things. I was angry WITH the man. Therefore languages have interpreted these differently situations differently. Therefore a person learning more languages gets exposed to these different abstract concepts. I hope this gives longterm value and makes you smarter.

Ok yes AI translator will diminish the INTEREST in learning foreign languages for hobbiests, and travelers. However, you cannot get a JOB by relying on an AI DEVICE, if that job is dependent on a different language than your own. Or, if you marry someone from a different language, you will need to learn a minimum of your spouse's language.

If humans stop learning foreign languages their brains will shrink and they will live shorter. As simple as that from neuroscience point of view. We already know that learning another language is what rejuvantes the brain. And no, no other thing aside from fasting and weight lifting cannot do it, and let's be honest as we age fasting and weight lifting becomes problematic for many people, so only sure way to keep one's brain young and to fend off dementia is....foregin language learning. So not sure abut other people, I will stick to learning foreign languages for life. Since I know what it has done to brains of my ancestors and how long they lived and that some of them even being prone to dementia never developed the symptoms and died of... all sorts of other causes that happen to people after the age of 90 years but dementia was not one of them.

A concerning question is whether we should trust an AI translator clever enough to perform such a task.
I disagree with this assessment for domestic (inside specific countries). I think you underestimate the superiority of face to face, eye to eye conversations over even the most sophisticated language translation system we could dream of. Now, psychologists will do a much better job than I can to explain what comes with natural human speech. Imagine public discourse and trust in multiethnic societies. Can the human mind really navigate a society where an invisible wall is erected? Imagine the social apartheid that results. Imagine the interactions of interracial couples from different language groups as the most salient example. How to they interact with each other and with their children? The fact that we are primates is something we should never forget. The logistics of any such technology matter.
Furthermore, learning is important and so is memorizing facts. Because it is from these facts that one's mind can create something new.

Different cultures have different ideas and concepts, so I don't think the accurate translation exist especially in conversation and literature.
Because sometimes it's not just the matter of "meaning", but the "sound", "rhythm" and other beautiful aspects of language.
