    Grits is sort of like starting a dish with plain white rice. The dish becomes what you add to it.

      Anybody else put 4 servings in a loaf pan (with herbs and cheese), then slice it to reheat in a skillet? They really are whatever someone decides to make them- blank canvas for all kinds of goodness.

    When you eat Grits, season them to your taste, otherwise they'll be bland. Grits are a
    " Medium" of sorts. They can be mixed with scrambled eggs, bacon bits, etc.. A very adaptable good derived from ground Hominy.

    Grits you go sweet or savory. For sweet add butter and sugar (and cinnamon if you have it). For savory, it’s butter, cheese and either andouille sausage or grilled spicy shrimp. Or both .

      Only yankees would add sugar to grits! Abomination! Grits go best with bacon or ham and a couple of sunny side up eggs mixed in. Lots of salt and pepper and maybe a dash of hot sauce.

    Ps.~ Sausage gravy is easy to make if you know how. Take ground sausage, form into patties, fully cook and then chop or blend into tiny bits. Take all purpose flour, stir into hot sausage grease until you get a pasty consistency and then add whole milk,va little at a time, stir and add milk sparingly repeating the milk addage until you've arrived at the desired consistency. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

    Grits with sausage gravy on top or just salt and pepper or sharp cheddar cheese or fried eggs over medium put on top grits cut them up with the yolk soft and eat them like that and drizzle hot sauce or toast with concord grape jam, so many things you can do with grits for breakfast- than here in South Carolina we serve them with shrimp in a sauce-called lowcountry shrimp and grits for evening meal. It is a diversified side dish for breakfast .

    • @williamlucas4656
      @williamlucas4656 4 місяці тому

      Grits are always meant to be the carrier of savory foods. They are not made with ground cornmeal but with ground hominy which is processed corn. Can’t make cornbread and grits but they do make an interesting fry up from the leftovers that farmers used as a snack or meal in the field back in the day.

    It’s amazing that Aiden associates hash browns with those hockey puck-shaped potato concoctions served at McDonalds. Now that I think about it, I think that’s what English hash browns are like - I’ve had similar with ‘full English’ breakfasts in the UK and on British Airways (with their ‘full English breakfast’ menu choice just prior to landing at Heathrow). 0:46

    Grits is a side dish! You use it like it's mashed potatoes. You don't eat it alone. It's always served with something usually you put butter or maple syrup and bacon on top.
    Often a fried egg is on top. But it's never just meant to be eaten alone.
    One fantastic way to enjoy grits is to roast a Cornish game hen along with a baked sweet potato and grits. But again you eat all of the ingredients together as a medley. Think of grits as similar to chutney. It's meant to compliment the main course

  • @who.is.kalebomari
    @who.is.kalebomari 7 місяців тому

    Butter and Sugar is the only way to go with Grits lol. And the thicker the better. Oddly enough the more north you go, typically they say butter and sugar goes on grits, and southerners say salt goes on grits. I was born and raised in Washington DC/Maryland so it's literally in between the north and the south so it's typically 50/50 on who says what. But different places have different variations of grits, typically in the Northeast its seafood and grits, so shrimp and grits, marylanders typically do some sort of crab and grits sometimes, southerners do it differently as you guys saw.

      Is what I kept loudly saying to the TV!
      When they finally did it at the fancy place, they enjoyed it so much more!
      And good gracious, for the love of Mike - use a spoon and not a fork!
      It's as daft as trying to eat ice cream with a fork...!?!

    There are two camps for grits. Some like it with butter and salt and pepper others like a sweet version with syrup of some kind. Eaten plain would be unheard of.

      I'm in the first camp, savory for sure. Maybe add some cheese or jalapeños. Bacon bits?
      He did mention maybe adding jelly when they were at WH. Kinda same flavor direction as syrup. Which is a huge no thanks for me. But I also strongly lean towards biscuits and gravys going together vs biscuits and jelly or honey. Whichever direction one goes, never eat a dry biscuit. Unless you like choking...

      @@jenniferrichards9841 agree on savory. I’m trying to remember back a half century ago my first reaction to grits. I’m pretty sure I did not like them the first time I tried them as a child. But then again, I didn’t like beer the first time either so there you go. As for biscuits, if I’m eating them as a meal, bring on the sausage gravy. If having biscuits as a side, butter and honey will do just fine.

    It's amusing watching people describe the texture of grits without using the most descriptive term, gritty
