I worked for a gun shop that sold multiple brands of gun safes. 9 out of 10 safes that needed warranty claims were failures of the electronic pad. Regardless of brand that was almost always the failure point. Mechanical dials were far superior in reliability.

I was a GSA safe "Custodian" when I was in the Military. We used high end stuff for weapons and the electronic dials were absolute garbage and failed at almost every unit I was at.The mechanical dials were easier to maintain and while re-comboing them could suck sometimes, they were much easier to maintain and rarely failed.

These Q&As are always great. Keep doing your thing, Karl! Oh, and thanks for introducing me to both Deviant Ollam's channel/stuff and the Behind the Bastards/It Could Happen Here podcasts - some of my very favourite things that I've found through you.
Re suppressors - what do you think of their utility for a defensive firearm? Being from the UK this isn't a thing here, but it seems that you aren't going to want to grab ear protection if you hear a bump in the night so a suppressor would make sense? Is this the use case for shotgun suppressors? (We know Dev loves his shotgun by the bedside - does he have it suppressed?)

    • @trioptimum9027
      @trioptimum9027 2 роки тому +1

The really major use case for shotgun suppressors is if you're hunting with dogs and you don't want your dogs to go deaf. (Edit: I mean, obviously everybody's needs vary. I don't hunt, I don't shoot shotguns, but I do love dogs. So whatever is going on with your home defense needs, if you need to sacrifice a bit of hearing to save your life, well, good trade, right? But deaf dogs is sad, especially if they get deafened essentially for recreation.)

Regarding your comments on training classes : you’re absolutely correct. The quality of the training and the trainer are the most important. Can the instructor pass on skills and knowledge that are useful? Is the instructor effective ? Those, to me, are the keys.

Some might of said before, but I think why pounches are more common than bandoleers is because pouches are far more multifunctional and easier to produce. Also, in a bandoleer, cartridges are exposed to the elements. It's easier not to get dirt and mud on your ammo when crawling through muck when it's in a closed pouch then splayed evenly over you waist and chest.
That is why I think it's a more regional thing. Mud maybe isn't as common in those areas so what you get for dirt is fine dust that, when you are handling every cartridge when loading gets brushed off to some extent.
And a pounch is a bag. Bags can hold anything and everything that fits in them. Bandoleer is a specilized tool.
Jack of All Trades, master of none.
But oft-times better then the master of one.

Utah native here with some perspective on "sprawl" in our state. We're definitely better off than most places with large cities when it comes to preservation of our natural wonders. However, in the last tennish years, lots of big tech companies have come here and our already exploding population has gone into overdrive. The cost of living is at least double what it was ten years ago and every piece of farmland in my home town is being covered with apartments and office buildings. I fear that at least in the north of Utah, in the surrounding areas of Salt Lake, we are in danger of irreparable damage to the natural beauty of our state.

@@tomhenry897 The Great Salt Lake fluctuates in size all the time, however in this latest multi-year drought it has reached its smallest size (shoreline, depth, and volume) in recorded history. That, though, is mostly a product of global warming and the Wasatch Mountains' failing of snow retention over the past 2 decades.

So true. While it's "fun" to poke them with things that they missed because they don't know the reality of how firearms work, they just get pissed and add it to the next revision ASAP. Like the current rounds about the critter who doesn't understand that magazines can be reloaded. It's just plain ignorant, but by poking him about it, he get's to revise and restrict even more.

Europe is muddier than Mexico, a lot of wars in Europe were fought on muddy fields or in damp forests, thus pouches make more sense. Distances are also fairly short so resupplying isn't as big of a deal. Deserts in Mexico are quite different so bandoliers might make more sense there.

My issue with NVG is that my $4,000 M1D isn’t losing value whereas todays $3,500 NVG is next years $2,000 NVG and in a few years it’s $1,000 or less.
“What’s your life worth?” Good point, I just don’t see me fighting in the dark in a way that I will be able to retrieve and use it whereas I carry a very bright flashlight.
But I often think about it. If it does come down to a $1,000 price point I may jump on it. Camping and hiking would be wizard with it.

Karl: about the training thing, I used to have the same mentality as you, i.e.: I'm not a "been there, done that" guy so I have no business teaching classes. I friend of mine who is a been there, done that guy talked me into doing classes and everyone that I've taught has said that I did a good job and that they thought the class was well worth their time.
I think the "touch the magic" students are akin to what you mentioned earlier in the vid about the tiny amount of people who want to shoot modern matches with archaic gear: they do exist but we think there's more of them than there really are because we hang out on channels like this. I think the majority of people who take classes just want to feel more comfortable and competent with their gun and as long as the teacher can help them do that then they aren't too concerned about his identity or even background.

On mechanically or electronically actuated gun safe locks, a vendor once pointed out something that'd make me buy electronic next time :
If there's a break-in and they see the mechanical lock and want the guns, they'll turn your abode upside down in search of the key.

Long range stage suggestion: Counter sniper. There are several silhouettes out at the max distance for the range (300m or so) but only one of them is a target. Stage is getting one round on the target, penalties for hitting non-target silhouette.

Regarding bandoliers vs pouches. From a European perspective, pouches are useful for keeping mud away from your ammunition. In the dry deserts of Mexico mud is probably not as much of a problem as it is in the fields of Europe.

Regarding the 5.56 vs 9mm question:
I generally agree with you. But if someone put both of said guns to my head and said I had to decide, or they'd shoot me with both? It would depend on the barrel length of the 5.56. If it's some "pistol" with a stupid short like 10.5" barrel, I'm gonna go with that because the icepicking effect you described earlier in the video tends to render the bullet slightly less obscenely traumatic.
If it's some 22" gun shooting like MK262 from a few yards away, I am very afraid of what cavitation is going to do to my insides. I feel like my chances of survival go way up if I'm not dealing with cavitation. I read a report a while back where a trauma surgeon in Chicago said that most of the time, if a victim is hit by a handgun, their survival frequently depends on whether or not they arrive at the hospital in a reasonably timely fashion, whereas rifles will just fuck you all kinds of up. Of course, he was trying to make the case against "assault" rifles in private ownership, and people are willing to make all kinds of strange assertions or impositions when they have ideology at stake. So it's hard to say how much of that is motivated by actual data.
    But still.
My choice is going to change based on how fast I can reasonably expect that 5.56 round to be going when it hits me.

For a rifle in 1899, I think a very good argument could be made for the 1894 in .30-30 winchester. Much flatter shooting than the .44-40, greater muzzle energy, equally quick handling and naturally pointing gun, light recoil, relatively high mag capacity; its a clear winner for me. The 1873 in .44-40 handled short distances a bit better, but the 1894 is much more versatile.
For the revolver, while the S&W Frontier and Colt SAA still works, the Colt New Service with its swing out cylinder is definitely the clear winner.

50BMG is here long term. The tanks that can survive 50BMG have been around for decades, but infantry armor that can resist it is a myth. 7.62mm is still in use all over the world.

Re: bandoliers. A lot of formal militaries would have to consider things like being able to function in a wide range of weather conditions. A pouch would keep rounds from getting wet in the rain better than a bandolier. That probably wouldn't be as much of an issue for a Mexican revolutionary in many areas.

Cheers for all you and the team do, Karl!
For bolt rifles I'd look no further than the Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 - takes hi-cap mags, AR style release, integral pic rail and overall very light, compact and accurate as it's built around a cold hammer forged 16.25" barrel. They also do them in 7.62*39 which I own and really enjoy even with just the factory 10 round box mags.
Throw on a low power variable optic like the Vortex 1-4*24 and you're laughing!
