@@Million_IQ yup, a couple of years ago on my personal vehicle had the engine melt. The mechanic told me it was essentially scrap metal at that point, which resulted in my car being totaled. Now imagine that when that car is you house, job, and you biggest investment. It’s going to cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix or replace it and you can’t make any money until it is.
I can agree with that. Shure owner operators make more. But probably make what a company driver makes after expenses. The customer is always looking for the cheapest price. No one in they're right is going to pay an owner operator more than what they would pay the next guy. Get those expenses down, that's a big deal in trucking.
@Sean but there is no other feeling like being an owner op. Once you try it, you're hooked. Freedom/being your own boss beats all the downsides. At least it does for me.
@@teamsdownfall9644 I’d suggest y’all look into credit and business credit to cover you when things like this happens. Allow the bank to pay your expenses and allow your assets to pay the bank back
When you grow up with a dad who’s only ever been an owner-op, you get used to all the stresses early on. Now that I’m driving, everything that would be considered a stressor is just part of the business to me. I can only say I’m definitely blessed.

When I started driving I did 3 months as a driver. After that I’ve been a owner operator. A year later I had six trucks. That was 13 years ago.

This is a very interesting question/ debate. I been trucking for a little over 7 years. All I ever hear about being a O/O is " you make more money " yes this is very true. But the catch is all that extra money doesn't or shouldn't go into your pocket, unless the truck is paid for. There is so many expenses that go into this business. I dont know if everyone who buys their own truck realizes that they just became a small business owner. I think you have to really think why should you become a O/O and is it worth it. Myself, I'm a company driver I still want to own a truck but at this time with everything just being so incredibly expensive I really dont think it's a good time. The biggest reason why I want my own truck is because I know a guy who owns one he works about 10 months out of the year takes the rest off. Trucking really kills your social/ recreational life. But it took this guy years to get to that level. He saved until he bought his truck in cash but he worked years until he can take long vacations. That's what really attracted me to owning a truck.
ok bro, i got home this morning, left sunday.. ran 1700 miles.. made 7200, 1600 in fuel.. the truck is paid for, bough it's cash.. only payment is my new flat bed.. been doing it for 16 months. was never a company driver just bought a truck , leased on to dads authority.. with that said yes, you do have expenses and a lot even with a paid truck but the free time you can't buy .. im done for this week.. last year my first year i made 230k.. ran 79k miles, has 13 weeks off and was home every weekend including a day in the week. i talk to guys that say they run 14k miles a month .. mam that's having no life.. i worked 20 years on drinking rigs so yes having money to start up does help abs having no bills too but bro you have to save your money if not you will always just be a rat on the wheel

@@travisbryan663 it took me 2 years to pay off my truck and trailer. I used to work in a warehouse and i had no social life during that time anyways. My young 20s are behind me, i partied, hung out, boned chicks etc..time to grow up right? I was homeless during those 2 years i paid down my truck and on the times i didnt drive i stayed at my dads. Now i have a new house and a 2021 GMC Sierra. I put in a good amount into my retirement account. Its all about managing your expenses. Yes O/O has risks but theyre worth it because most jobs can be extremely stressful and the people very toxic. I had to do my own thing.
If you’ve been a driver for 7 years it’s always gonna be to late bud, your too scared. And it sounds like your giving advise on why not to be an o/o. Just keep being a comp driver and keep making excuses but don’t lend out advise. I bought my first truck last year for 10k got some advise and bought 2 more after that both drivers are fam brother and moms X husband. I can work 12 days out of the month with out them and live a comfortable life out in Cali of all high cost of living places. Stick to what you know and if your scared or making excuses don’t lend that out for advise. I’m not gonna be a trucker forever but def couldn’t handle being a driver.

Thanks for your reply. I wish you would have worded it a bit diffrent, just calling me too scared was a bit much. I'm very cautious. I'm that way because I have known a few O/O who went bankrupt or just failed. I believe all who truck have a right to their opinion, I'm wasn't trying to talk as anybody out of being an O/O just trying to warn people. There's so many variables in this business that can stop a person quick. There is no disclaimer that says " results may vary" but that is a fact. Some people start off you dont know how much money they have and they hit it big in this business people like me who started with absolutely nothing, I was homeless there's a whole story about that but for a couple of years I was stuck being homeless. Once I got out of that I went to school got my cdl graduated 97% of my class. Busted my freaking butt for 6 years OTR had to go local due to some health issues. I own my own home now and its paid for. I've listened to a lot of O/O over the years and I try to balance their wisdom to what I face everyday. Heck even the UA-cam channel smart trucking tells us this is not the time to own a truck. I'm just trying to be smart about this, not jump in 100% there is no promise I'm going to make it. Yeah excuses..excuses. I hear ya. I'm not scared I'm being cautious thanks for your input.

Just got my first big repair bill as an owner op 12k BAM still will never go back to company driver…doesn’t matter how much your uncle is paying on gas …. Remember he is making enough money to cover all expenses PAY YOUUUUU and still makes money for him..and building relations is important but not necessary you can start working from the loadboards and build those relationships as you go

After being a manager on a trucking company for 7 years, I just went owner operator on a box truck, I use load boards and amazon board to get loads, I maintain the truck myself, I make decent money and I’m much happier, the best part is the freedom to do what ever I feel like doing, go for it cuh! Your tío would respect u and probably back u up
What load board is good? I know DAT but its not always the best

@@ERICK-di1yz not if you plan to do loads off of Amazon relay, you need a 26 footer for that, off of DAT load board I get lots of loads that don’t fill up the whole truck, but if u wanna do amazon relay u need a 26 footer, some people get away using a 24 footer, I do a load during the night with amazon, then I’ll find a load off of DAT for the day, you maximize your profits like that

@@haroldcotton3275 it can be done. Stopped OTR class A and found a city peddling job in a non cdl 26ft kw servicing Lowes and Costco with plants. A lot of short haul single day 300-700 mile roundtrips. Load bonuses, backhaul bonus, and hourly retention bonuses. $1800 after tax, home every night, off most Saturdays, always off Sundays, off all holidays. Costco and Lowes pay the company a lot of money!
You want fuel mileage? I don’t recommend a big hood tractor.

Just the maintenance alone will blow anyones mind. Owner operator, you are responsible for the hustle and the hardwork. Stressful indeed, but you are your own boss and you make your own schedule. I can only imagine the amount of numbers that run through an owner/operator’s mind everyday.

Yeah my dad owns a small trucking company, but being owner anything can happen like a truck breaking down or a driver calling in sick.

From my experience the reason you just gave, will forever more be your reason. No ones ready for becoming an owner operator. But you gotta start somewhere.

There is always ups & downs in trucking. Any serious owner will tell you, run hard when the money is good, run harder when it's not and pray you have saved enough to get through the hard times because until you have that pink slip in your hand, you are never comfortable.
Company driver. The company literally takes care of the whole truck and pays for gas, repairs, oil changes, EVERYTHING
Ya company just for me. U can get the right company nd still make 80-90k a year. Taxes nd insurance is crazy
80-90 before taxes ain't shit, company drivers no longer have the write offs they had before. 1.3 million dollars last year on 3 trucks, 714k after all expenses, it would take you close to 20 years to bank that after you pay taxes on 80-90k. Stop listening to the supertruckers, owner op isn't as stressful as they make it out to be. 26 yrs as an owner, I was comfortably a millionaire by 2009. The last decade I've made nothing but fuck you money, house is paid, trucks and trailers are paid off, each truck has a reserve maintenance account of 100k, it's just normal operation expenses and play money now.

My last company paid 200k a week for truck diesel, 100k a week for refer diesel, around 20k a week in tolls and they paid amazing and very nice equipment. Brand new and well taken care of. The owner actually owns all 500 trucks and 1200 trailers and owns his 16 bay shop. Wash bay. Trailer wash bay. Drivers lounge. Second shop with state of the art body shop and paint shop, alignment machine and he also owns his terminal and last year added a 10 million dollar addition and remodeled the existing one. Amazing company. I was just ready for home time more and a local job.

My lesson as a company driver is to try to have a balance in life. I know what it is to be living and committed to that truck my eyes where open to I rather be near and home with my family and have a balance with company driver.

Who knows what the answer is today I spent 41 years in the business 33 as a Teamster and I'm glad I was one of the last guys to be able to say I'm getting my pension guys you got to stick together and unionize and get paid fairly get the companies to pay into a retirement package for you. And have a grievance mechanism to protect you against companies that would use you like a tool.
Now that said I I know guys that have owned their own trucks and have done all right and certain segments of the business but they all look at me now that I'm retired and they go s*** I wish I would have gone down the road you traveled.

😂, you've been listening to truck driver stories. The first few years can be stressful if you are a brain dead fool, but if you go at it smart, you can be a millionaire in less than a decade. Try that being a company slave paid in pennies per mile.
Been a welder for 6 years traveling the country. Got burnt out and I've transitioned to trucking. I'm a company bitch right now but I'm gonna grit my teeth, squeeze every dollar and bit of experience I can from them while having the advantage of being a company driver. It's all about what you want out of life. If one is fine with being told what to do, where to go and working for the man then more power to them. If an owner ops can cut out brokers, there's a pile of money to be made. Think of it like this, we trade our time for money, make sure that money is worth your time because that's the one thing you don't get back in this life.

Company driver...we get raped on pay, and taken advantage of. 70hour weeks how can you say your pay is good lmao??? If I did 70 hours at McDonald's I'd have more money people. I have to wait over 20 hours for backhauls for $80...that $4 an hour. I will get my own truck because life is all about responsibilities. I've been saving like Jesus and with gas prices up or not I'm taking that leap.
I know a couple people that run and they all do the same thing. Run hard for a week or two and relax for a week or two. Run when You feel and still make as much as a company driver. If you can't fix a truck then why do you even have a CDL?????

Many companies why are you working at one that is so bad. None are perfect all will steal time from you. But I used to do a warehouse job 10hr shift and believe it sucked I went straight back to truck driving plus pay was better.
A CDL is a license to drive trucks not a license to fix trucks. Don’t get it twisted.

Owner operator sounds fun but company has it advantages to it.
I’ll stick to being a company driver. I understand you can make more as a OP, but you have more financially responsibility and nobody to turn to for problems. I make between $90k - $98k a year (OTR) and home weekly and even tho cost of living, food and basic necessities have gone up, I’m still living comfortably. I’m also only pulling a reefer and I got a brand new truck. I’m sure with the right company, you could potentially make more with other specialty work.
I'm a lease op with the company I trained with. A bad weeks check is around $1.2k. Good week $1.8-2.5k. Great week $2.5-5k, all after bills and expenses
If you are living your best life and you are happy, don't compare yourself to anyone else, compare yourself to who you were yesterday and try to be even better. You sound like you are happy and doing well, stay safe brother and keep on trucking.

40 quarts of 15w-40, and an oil filter or 3 depending on engine model. An oil change alone is 250-300$. A turbo is 5k, clutch is 3k, rear end is 10k. Engine is 25-30k. They take alot of risk because being broke down they are also losing money. Not to mention 700$ steers and 500$ drive tires that you know your going to be used up quick.
Where are you buying parts, 😂. Detroit 12.7 turbo, 600 bucks. Out of frame rebuild 17k, 22 grand for a fresh Detroit reman. Just did clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, clutch brake, 2800 dollars. Tires are really expensive right now but who runs a business like this with a large reserve maintenance account? You're preaching to fools who operate a truck from hand to mouth, no experienced owner is stressing like you're making it out.

Owner operator following my dad's footsteps
There's really only stress when things go wrong. No different than a company driver, but when things go wrong all the extr money saved up from being o/o makes it easier. If your a company guy you dont have that and your loosing your weeks pay
Started driving big rigs for FedEx Freight at 21. I left at 27 and joined my pops company. I bought a 2013 Pete 386 and 48 ft spread axle flatbed with a conestoga. Did that for 4 years and decided to sell everything. Owner operator wasn’t for me, I prefer being a company driver & not worrying about breakdowns, taxes, fuel, flats, customers, appointments etc. Now at 32 I drive for a good paying/union company.
Being a owner operator/company driver has its good and bad.
I do miss going in a convoy down to vegas or Phoenix, enjoying the open road, chatting on the CB, seeing a nice sunrise and sunset out in open, the best trucking moments I had was as an owner operator.
Definitely a owner operator with multiple trucks but I've owned a few different companies over the years so I know the stress that comes with a business.
Stress comes with being a Boss.

Being an owner operator in today's market would be rough , I drive for TMC top notch equipment, and great pay on a percentage basis , I am happy as a company driver
I've been a company driver for years... During the pandemic I changed the narrative and became a owner operator. Is it easy? No.
Are there more responsibilities? Yes.
Yet the freedom to do and work my on schedule and new earnings, give an outstanding feeling. Plus more time to enjoy a better quality of life makes up for all the new responsibility.
Owner, it's stressful yes but it's well worth it

The best is working for a family member like you. Its a win win
Owner operator all day also I'm my own mechanic. I have a driver I sit back and collect. Save all your profit for a few months in case stress hits money is the reliever .
Biggest difference is time. As an owner you are free to take time off anytime you want as long as you control your expenses. Plus you can hire drivers to work that 14hr day instead of doing it yourself.
It has it ups and downs being a owner but u could make good money

Let's hear from some owner operators that are actually thriving with the freight rates and gas prices right now. Everytime I ask an o/o is it going good for em they always say don't do it. Stay company.. but fuck that I'm trying to develop owner mindset..
If I grossed 14k a week to do a run from WA to TX and did that 3 times. That's 42k gross minus 6k a week estimate in fuel minus truck payment(2500) minus trailer payment (2000) minus insurance (5k a month for new authority estimate)

A company driver isn't fine as long as you're with a decent company. I've seen trucking company pay as a low as 45k a year

There is a slight difference in owner operator with your own authority and leasing your truck to a company. Lots of perks to save money when leasing. I think the game changer is learning how to maintenance a truck yourself. Oil changes and greasing is easy. People pay big money to have that done.
