What about graphite watercolors? You also have loose charcoal, I like the feel of the charcoal so used the thick sticks, I didn't like the pale delicate willows.
You're wrong about graphite. You don't have to do multiple layers for very dark areas. Especially with the newer super-dark pencils like Faber Castell Matt Black pencils. I have used charcoal, but I prefer graphite, because it's easier to blend and erase and it's not as messy as charcoal. That's just my own opinion, but I am done with charcoal!

You can pick pencils and charcoal, they don't cost much, you'll be spending more on the paper you buy.
