Stumbled upon your video after reading her book. Me & my mom are hoarders, were given a lot of used stuff over the years. She's very busy but I want her to read this book. It is life changing. I started doing the clothes today.

Bravo. You make me excited to purge my stuff too. Yes, please....more of these videos. And maybe talk us through a few hard decisions...like..".I like this but it looks a bit worn, or this looks brand new but I never really liked how it fit," etc... Thanks, Jen! :)

ArmadaleProductions For the 7 pieces I had to try on, my decision was based solely on how it felt to wear that item. I tried to stay true to the "sparks joy" principle even when I broke protocol for those few items.

I also read the "The Life changing...." and did a clothing purge. Weirdly, I though I had NO clothing at all- and I wound up filling 4 Hefty Lawn bags! Amazing! And now, I just have about 25% of the clothing - but it's stuff hat fits really well, not stained or worn out or old or ill fitting. It took me about 1 full day.

This was just the inspiration I needed. I paused the video 2 minutes in, pulled out all of my spring summer clothes (3 jumbo space bags) and purged 2/3 of it while I watched. Whats left is all stuff I love. Great video Jen!

    Dear Jen,
I feel a little embarrassed to say this, but I actually got a little emotional while watching this. I have (over the past year's time) become increasingly more aware of how many things I have that I do not need, or really want anymore. I live in a relatively small, but comfortable 1 bedroom apartment in the city center, with my husband and cat, in a northern German state. When I moved to Germany from the U.S., I basically came over, with 2 shares, a carry-on & a backpack... And I have repeatedly asked myself over the past six months, "how did I manage to accumulate so much stuff?!"... And I honestly became overwhelmed. I've really enjoyed watching your videos in the last months. I enjoy your personality, and like to each your organizational videos and other ones as well. I recently came across that book, and feel like it is just time to de-clutter & detach from the things that don't bring joy and that don't make me feel at peace or comfortable. I'm so glad you're shared your experience, and I look forward to moving towards a happy and tidy space. I feel encouraged. I appreciate all the efforts you put into sharing this with us. Thank you

Sorry about the typos; commenting from my tablet leaves only a small window of text to view at once, while typing, and sometimes auto-complete really gets me...lol
It should have read "I came over with two suitcases" (not "two shares") & "I enjoy watching your organizational videos"... :)

I seriously just love how openly and candidly you share, Jen. You are one of my absolute favorite you tubers because of how much intention and care you clearly take (and give) with what you have in your life - whether it's your own personal belongings or the content on your channel. This video was so well done and motivating. Thank you so much for all that you had to do to make this happen.

I need to do this.I have so many clothes that I haven't worn for years cause I've got bigger after giving birth.I don't want to put them away or give away cause I'm thinking I can wear them when I get back to my slimmer, thinner self, but it doesn't happen. When I put away the clean laundry I get irritated with the stuff that I have cause they take so much space in our small closet.
Thanks Jen for being always an inspiration for cleaning and organizing:)
    and good job!

I loss 40 pounds in 2014. I still have 20lbs more to go. I had to do this to make room for clothes that fit. I love the "less" look I now have. The hardest thing is t-shirts I kept that had something to do with my kids growing up years. Things like "Cheerleader Mom" "Emily's Mom" "Laura's Mom" "Soccer Mom". Still working on them.

You did a great job and are such an inspiration. Last week, when you did the book review on Kondo - I was so intrigued and began to research her. I found videos about the method which led me to the minimalistic lifestyle. I began clearing out my bathroom yesterday and I tell you - I can already feel the difference. I tried to do my closet but already had a appointment set with a stylist to help me find my individual style before letting go of things. So I'll do the closet last. My goal is to go through every area of my house and get rid of what I don't love. It's amazing, I've been going through areas of my house and mentally getting rid of items - I don't have enough time to physically rid items yet because work and kids activities. Spring cleaning will be so liberating this year. I'm so grateful for your review and hope you will continue to make videos. Please don't ever stop even when the negative folks start spewing their negativity. Thanks so much Jennifer - you've touched this soul.

I would enjoy seeing all aspects of your Spring cleaning purging and organizing process. Most of us have similar areas in our homes that from time to time have a need of purging, updating or replacing. I'm sure there are bits and pieces from your experience that we can all garner some tips, helpful hints or just pure entertainment for those that enjoy organizing and/or all of your videos. Please, do share!

My hubby and I purged our clothes two weeks ago after listening to her audiobook someone uploaded to youtube and got rid of 8 tall kitchen trash bags, a 65 gallon tote, and two 35 gallon ones. It really feels like the room feels lighter and is totally freeing. I loved this style video you did and would love to see more. Great job of letting go.

You have inspired me to do this to my clothes this easter weekend. I also want to clean out my garage - It is accumulating all sorts of items that don't have places to be. It is driving me crazy. Most of it is leftover items from when my husband and I moved in together. I just need to get in and organise it all like this process. Problem is I need my husband to help with the decisions so I don't throw out things he wants. Thank you once again for giving me ideas and inspiration. !! UPDATE : 14 bags donated and 2 thrown away. WOW my pile at the start was as big as yours was!! I couldn't believe how much I had. THANK YOU.

    This was exciting to watch!
I did this last week with my clothes and I felt so liberated and powerful afterwards. I guess it's because I got rid of things that werent making me feel good or flattering but I was holding on to them anyway for years instead of listening to my feelings about them. I'm so glad those negative feelings are gone. Everything in my closet now just makes me feel good, presentable and beautiful. It's so refreshing to walk in my closet in the morning and know that no matter what I chose to wear I'll like it.
    Great work Jen.

I really, really enjoyed this video. I've just recently started purging items in my home and would love to see your process in other areas. Haven't done my closet yet, but it's something I'll be tackling really soon. Majorly working in organizing, or rather clearing out my garage. Working on having some Elfa installed there, and finally having my entire house organized. You did a fantastic job with your closet. I've been following you for a very long time now. Actually I discovered Elfa through you when you did that mayor closet overhaul a few years ago. I now have Elfa in every single closet in mine. These are the videos I enjoy the most from your channel, the organizational ones. I have borrowed many of your ideas. So please, keep sharing!

Joni Sorsen Don actually doesn't like using drawers much, which is why he only stores his socks, underwear, and lounge pants in the dresser. He much prefers having the bulk of his clothing on shelves or hanging in the closet.

I absolutely enjoyed watching this. I've heard a lot of buzz about this book and am so anxious to read it after watching your video. As I was watching, I said to my husband that we needed to do this and he agreed. While I don't have an abundance of clothes - I am one who has an excess of home decor and other items. I want everything in our home to be items that we love and we honour. I truly enjoyed this and look forward to more videos like this. Great job!

I have never seen someone have so many clothes and shoes in their wardrobe even after the purge... no offence but I think Americans must live very different to the rest of the world. Great job Jen, you really seem to have grasped the point of the book, to simply surround yourself with items you love regardless of what that number of items may be! I have been purging my clothes a lot over the past year and as soon as I think I'm finished I find more things to purge and as I purchase new items I love I simply donate one that I don't. Looking forward to seeing more of your progress in future videos 😊

  • @lovemyshipoo
    @lovemyshipoo 9 років тому +1

Yes I do ...want more of these videos! I think you are right on target. Good job!
I think we all have to be aware of how much stuff we are buying...it can kind of sneak up
On a person, but even more... I'm working really hard at trying to make sure what I do buy I need, will wear
AND I really do love it. Too often, impulse buying is a problem and I end up later wondering why I purchased the item.
Then it either takes up space or ends up being given away which is a total waste from my financial point of view...not
that it is a waste as far as giving it to charity.
You've got me pumped up....let's keep going. Will be waiting for the next video!😊

Jen, this was GREAT I am in the process of reading the book. One thing to your comment about what people are saying..GOOD FOR YOU!....lets be real, everyone buys new items for themselves and going through what you already have and purging what you no longer like or use is a perfect way to see what you do need. About a month ago I decided I needed to get new underwear, bras, t's and jeans. Once I purge I will pick up those items. THANK YOU so much for sharing your thoughts and process on this purge. I would LOVE to see how you go through your other purges, I find it inspiring to watch and sometimes I may get ideas, like rearranging the layout of my closet as you showed us. SO yes, please do share! I am SO excited to start mine. My goal is my clothing, office and basement. xoxo

If it wasn't 1:30 AM I would start ripping my closet apart...my problem has always been rationalizing why I "might" need it in the future. If I have a sweatshirt from somewhere I have traveled, for some reason I feel I need to keep it even if I don't wear it. I also, like you, live in a 4 season area so you need to be prepared for anything. I have a huge walk in closet...full and I have taken over 1/2 of my husbands closet plus a dresser and armoire...it is time to "Let it Go" as Elsa would say...now my weekend is planned. Thanks for this AWESOME video Jen. Very inspirational and motivating. Great job, thanks for sharing it with us!

Very inspiring video! I purged one large bag worth of "sentimental" and "maybe-one-day" clothes after I watched your book review video, and it does feel liberating. I hadn't worn those items in years if ever. Some of them still had tags on them and, as you mentioned, I had been "rationalizing" and feeling guilty about letting them go, which was only weighing me down. Please keep the videos coming; they're very motivating.

I did my entire wardrobe last week. I thought about doing room by room with the other items but then decided the reason the clothes purge made a BIG impact on me was because it was every single piece of clothing. If I would have done just the hall coat closet that would have been nothing special. It's what I had always done. So next I will do every single book, dvd's, cd's, magazines, catalogs &. cookbooks. It will fill GREAT getting that entire category finished ! Good Luck Jen with your next group of purging.

It's ironic that your doing this video now! I haven't read this book but just this last Wednesday I pulled all my dresses out of my closet, threw them on my bed and went through them, touching them, trying them on, letting go of the sentimental items etc. At some point I'll go through the rest of the closet and have my husband help me do his things. We have a teeny closet that my husband and I share and we are both major clothes horses and I feel totally overwhelmed when I look inside our closet. Great video! I'm sorting out my home at the moment as I am redecorating my whole home. I'm the one that likes home decor and interior design. Like you were saying about moving away from certain styles of clothes as we get older I am feeling like this with my home. This is good to do once a year especially summer or before Christmas! I keep going back to your basement storage before & after tour as I'm going to do this in my Loft/attic. Some of the ideas of the book are good but in the end you have to do it your own way. The reason why I have a big purge before I decorate is because there will be less things to store but then the things I don't like anymore can go. I'm finding that things that maybe didn't work in one room can work in another. Love to see more video's about the home! Off to sort out my clothes! Thanks! LOL

Wow great video Jen! Very open and honest. When you first dumped all your clothes on the floor I had a flash back of my old bedroom in high school. Clothes were always everywhere! Haha. Inspirational and just in time for spring cleaning :)

Personally, I would like to see more of the actual process. The sorting of the items. The times you got stuck and why. I think photos of the before and after on the drawers would be fine and a quick video of the closet since it is so hard to photograph. It seemed like you sped through the actual sorting process. I did still enjoy it and you told us alot about how you did it, but I think more of showing us those 7 items you weren't sure about or maybe sharing some of the joy and memories that made you want to keep the items you did would be more helpful for me to understand how the method works.

I've just finished sorting my own "tops" using Marie's method. It's fascinating that simply holding an item and doing a gut/heart check -"Does thing bring me joy?" Can be so accurate. I too tried a few item on after holding them to get a read. In each case the read was spot on! A blouse that I got a "yes" that I had thought beautiful but never liked the fit. Which recent changes to my body, it looked great! Likewise an elegant favorite got a "no." It turned out to not longer fit! The most delightful experience, one that took me by surprise, was walking into my closet to find something unrelated and being caught with feelings of gratitude and appreciation at the blouses hanging there. They were all "just right." Things I love and look good in. Even though I have about a third of what I started with, I feel much more abundant. Thank's for a great video. I'll be referring it to friends.

Hi Jen, I just finished watching this video. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I watched your "Book Nook" video on TLCMOTU and really appreciated watching "the purging of the clothes" process. I am not organized but would love to be and this method will definitely help me. Best of all, to see you , one of my favorite YT organizers, go through your clothes, what a blessing and Congratulations! I had purchased the audiobook so I could listen while I traveled to my parents and back. Still listening , but what a great book! And I could visualize the excitement of completing this task. Thanks again for sharing with all of us! PS: Thank you also for bring back your Book Nook vids :)
    Take care.

Thanks for sharing your purge, Jen - I really liked the set up of this video and would love to see more! I used the KonMari method for purging my clothing and was amazed that I really only kept about 30% as well. I agree with your statement that now I know the only things in my closet are those that I love wearing!

I started last week on clothes too but I did mine in subcategories because I know I have ALOT of clothes. Took me full day just to do tops(shirts, sweaters, blouses), then bottoms this week. I was so overwhelmed by the amount of clothes I hadn't worn, stuff that was too big(I lost 20lbs last year), faded, etc, you are right about the "shock" of it all. Thanks for your bravery in letting us in your private world. I did not videotape mine even though my hubby told me I should have. Took pics though, been to embarrassed to put it on Instagram but now I think I will because of you,

I purged my closet 2 weeks ago. I woke up from my nap facing a disgustingly messy closet and decided to tackle it right then and there. It felt soooooo good when I was done!! :) Everything is organized and it looks so pretty when I open my closet door. I purged my make up a month ago and gave what I no longer wanted to my friend's daughter who is in college. While she's on a tight budget she loved all the high end, barely used blushes and eye shadows.

Thanks for sharing! I did a similar purge to my closet and dresser last summer. However, as I am newly engaged and about to graduate from graduate school, I want to take this summer to purge through all of my belongings before I move in with my soon to be husband in December. It can be so overwhelming, but you make it look so easy, which is extremely encouraging! Thanks for sharing. xoxo

congrats! I can relate how time-consuming this process can be, we done something similar (going through everything) very recently :-) deciding which one to keep and not keep, had to actually try most of it to see if they still fit or not, how they look ... it was great to not have all those things taking space that we no longer wear, and was able to replace them with the new ones that we wear regularly

THAT was nothing short of amazeballs!!! We recently moved...twice. Started building a house, our previous home sold immediately and so we had to get a rent house in the interim. Needless to say I did purge A LOT in that process but I bet I could purge even more with the shocking dump it all out method. Yes please!!! I did this in December when I started following Cuyana' s ways of only keeping timeless pieces that you love. It feels so good to be rid of the clothing items that I really didn't like but kept just because I spent money buying them. So now I only buy items that I know by any doubt that I really like and see myself wearing for the next couple years. No more what I call throw away clothes, that you only wear a couple times and throw away. I now buy quality clothing only. I would love to see what you do with the rest of the house because I haven't touch mine yet but need too. Thanks for sharing. :)

It's great that you have a list of clothes that you want to buy, instead of just going to the mall and buying random things :) Will try to do this, I don't really like clothing shopping, but if I have a list of what I need, maybe it will be an easier mission.
I do this with groceries, I'm not sure why I'd never thought of making a list for clothes! =)

as much as i love watching videos like this, it also kind of irritates me at the same time. not jen at all really, but the premise of this book she used. like...if i sorted all of my clothes based on how they made me feel, i wouldn't have anything to wear. i don't like 90% of my wardrobe because i've grown out of it as a person. a lot of it just doesn't appeal to me anymore, but let's be honest, clothes are expensive, especially if i'm replacing things that are technically perfectly fine. so choosing what to discard based on feelings rather than necessity seems, well, kind of ridiculous and almost immature. at the same time though, i guess knowing that you've got the money to replenish your wardrobe ten times over makes it a lot easier. not hating, just making a statement. obviously this method isn't for anyone with a budget, lol. but in all honestly, apart from that, i did like this video. i love watching people go through things and organize stuff because it's just so interesting.

and no, i know that the point of this is to declutter, not replace clothing by buying even more, but from my standpoint, if i got rid of what didn't "feel" good, i would HAVE to buy more stuff because i'm pretty sure i'd have two pairs of jeans and maybe five shirts, haha.

***** I get what you are saying about getting rid of things that are still nice, but that is why you sell or donate those items. Why keep something that doesn't make you feel good when you wear it? My friend and I used to have clothing swap parties where we bring clothes we don't care for anymore and swap, it's super fun and you get new things and get rid of things you no longer need or like.

I was in the same position as you about a year ago. I hated most of my clothes, but the thought of parting with anything was overwhelming. Eventually though, I went through my wardrobe and little by little got rid of what I hated or didn't fit. As for replenishing, utilize second hand stores. There is a fabulous one near my home that always has buy one, get one sales. Many times you will find articles of clothing that were barely used or still have tags on them. I once purchased six overstuffed bags of clothes for $94-$96. Thrift stores are amazing! :)

    • @AnnEvelyn7
      @AnnEvelyn7 9 років тому +28

I think you might be looking at the process differently. When you said you hate 90% of your wardrobe that was the point. When you walk out in public, wearing those clothes you hate, are you subconsciously giving off a feeling/vibe that you don't want? Many people have things they want in life...a new job, a husband, new friends... Others pick up that "vibe" of how we are feeling. So, if you walk out feeling I really hate this but it's all I have, then you may not be receiving the things in life you may want. I may be way off base here, but that is what I felt reading your post. The other thing is, you can find clothing that makes you feel pretty at the thrift store. My friend showed me an outfit she bought for under $10 just the other day and it was cute!! Things don't have to be expensive to make you feel good. Perhaps those clothes you have can be changed/altered by you for no money to become more appealing. Sorry if I jumped in, but I felt compelled to respond. I hope someday that 90% hate turns into 90% love when you open your closet. ❤️

Thanks Jen for sharing your purge. I did the same thing last year when we moved into our new home. I got rid of so much that I barely had anything left. I have been slowly replacing items that needed replacing. It would be very unrealistic to expect someone not to shop again. WIll I buy as much stuff as I got rid of? No, but I will be mindful of the new things I do buy and make sure they will be put to use. Plus, I love shopping!
