Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

I lost someone to the opioid epidemic early on. He was prescribed oxycontin after a car accident.
I watched him deteriorate and tried to get him health.
The hospital viewed him as an addict and not their problem but it started as doctor prescribed.

The problem is that certain opioids can actually be a safer alternative for those living with extreme pain to drugs like Naproxen, ibuprofen etc - which is known for causing liver issues and stomach bleeds. It works in some people too. The problem is obviously addiction and dependency, it's imperative that doctors monitor patients intensively when on a course of opioid like morphine.
This has not been the case clearly. Patients have been prescribed them and then basically left to ween themselves off them. That's my personal experience anyway, here in the UK. I had major emergency surgery on my abdomen that resulted in me staying in hospital for 2 months.
I don't necessarily resent those responsible for prescribing them, nor do i feel any animosity to the politicians or families such as the Sacklers for bringing them to market. I believe the problem in my case was the aftercare, and the fact that my GP failed to monitor me correctly.
This has ruined many lives, not because of the effectiveness of the product, but the negligence and lack of training and understanding amongst the General Practitioners signing them off month after month outside of the ER rooms.
Those who wish to ban them entirely and stigmatise anybody that touches them, have never been really sick themselves with a life threatening condition and don't know what they're talking about.

It is astonishing that so little attention is given medically to cannabis because it can't be done legally, at least in the United States. Our laws are crazy: cannabis is in the FDA's Schedule 1 category, the same as heroin, yet cannabis is available for at least medical use in most of the states, and recreational use in a couple of dozen.
But the federal government prohibits research except at the University of Mississippi, to which the government sends one batch of very poor quality cannabis once a year. This never fails to frustrate and disgust the researchers.
Yet the potential medical benefits of correct cannabis use may prove eventually to be amazing. There are many traumatic brain injury survivors from explosive blasts who have found that cannabis use permits them to discontinue Big Pharma drugs. The vast majority of these survivors are, of course, veterans. The outrage is that whatever a person's state laws may be, if he's convicted of simple cannabis possession, he'll stand a good chance to lose all of his federal disability benefits.
I don't think our federal government is evil, just corrupt, stupid, too lazy to be valuable.

Americans are far too willing to take prescription drugs. I understand there are legitimate amazing drugs for health problems but way too many people take drugs for little things. I know people that take antidepressants because it gets dark in the winter. I know people that pop pain killers for the slightest bit of pain. I recently had my gallbladder removed and my doctor tried to get me on prescription drugs for my digestive tract I said no.

I agree, but to be fair general surgery is a fairly good reason to prescribe a pain killer to a patient. We have the technology to reduce suffering and it should be used, but used far more sparingly.

@Jay's Philosophy Possibly cause you really were depressed and thankfully received help but so many are written scripts for everything and anything with no regard to long or short term side effects. Looking back at 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic in comparison to Covid and many of the deaths attributed to Spanish Flu were actually from OVERDOSING of aspirin. The salicylic acid was still pretty new to market and helped for pain and reduced fever but people took WAY TO MUCH. Death by bleeding ulcers and intestines and brain hemorrhages etc... So died in World War 1 from Spanish Flu outbreak could really be died from aspirin overdose.

It was a Rockefeller scheme to control meds and doctors via "new drugs", all synthesized from petroleum. That's when real medicine was destroyed in the West. When these new drugs started giving people unheard of cancers, Rockefeller started the Cancer Institute, thereby cornering that market. The money involved is huge, of course. Vaccines were born from military bioweapon research as a necessary safeguard for troops against biological attacks. They have killed millions in pursuit of their agenda.

They will create an epidemic by making pain control important for patient customer service. They will ruin us!! Has anyone heard about an o2 sat? THAT'S your 5th vital sign." I remember pretty much every word because his anger was so scary. I thought he was going to stroke out.
