@@ShinoSarna Glad to see other fans of the Crusader games. I had the demo when I was a kid way back, but I only beat the full game a few years ago. I managed to use joy2key to jerryrig a modern controller to get semi-decent controls working, and it's a lot better than the default controls in both the PC and PS1 versions, but it was still super clunky. A modern remaster with fluid controls and gameplay would be amazing

@@ezyto It's not technically isometric but everyone knows that general style of perspective as isometric so it's easier to call it that for clarity
3:24 That made me realize that anyone making a game in this would need to figure out something so enemies don't shoot you from too far off-screen. Then again, answer would probably be manually limiting monsters attack range.
you can write custom attack functions that have limited range and require enemy to move closer to the player to use.
@@SinaelDOverom Yeah, exactly what I meant. And it's best to have a custom attack function, because if you did some code that prevents enemies from shooting when offscreen, that would change the difficulty based on resolution. Which is obviously unwanted.
or just do what Hotline Miami 2 did and say "actually getting shot from random directions by enemies miles away is a feature and it's meant to be hard shut up"
Avoiding use of hitscan enemies would help.

The fact that it clearly started as another Crusader No Remorse remake in Doom project it's great

I would play the shit out of a Doom adventure game that has slow, relaxing story sections like the start of this demo mixed in with action segments like at the end. Your work is looking amazing.
This is amazing. Original X-Com vibes, but in our beloved Doom setting.
This would make an amazing horror game with the fog of war. Especially with the doom sounds echoing if there are monsters nearby to add ambience.

Nice! Someone should remake Diablo 1 with this and try to adapt its artwork with this camera rotation function in mind. Being able to see Diablo 1's levels in ways you never could because of its fixed camera position would be incredible!

I think the graphics optimization efforts are all occurring in vkDoom. Check it out. They are also pulling commits from gzdoom, so this should all be possible there too.
@@dileepvr VKDoom optimizes like how you can optimize GZDoom by getting a far more expensive and powerful CPU (In terms of individual core performance). Mostly because it just does so by raising the system requirements, not making anything run any better.

Keep working on this man, it already looks great. Hell, I mean it would be even more awesome if you could expand this outside of the reigns of just GZDoom. For a while I've been thirsting for an easy to use and straightforward game-engine specifically designed around easily making isometric games like Baldur's Gate, the first 2 Fallouts, or even Diablo 1 and 2, and there really aren't many options, and what there is usually isn't in any sort of active development and hasn't been worked on in years. Would be great to see your project move forward into being something like that.

Let's hope this time it gets merged into GZDoom. Also, maybe add a flag for preventing sectors from rendering in isometric view? Since in the second example map the polyobject sector is visible, and I presume other types of control sectors are visible too.

Seeing this makes me wish voxels were still rendered as particles like the now-discontinued ZDOOM.
Next best thing would probably be low-fidelity 3D models, but I could see basic 3D visuals and the your isometric mod being used in projects emulating Tiberian Sun's visual artstyle

This is pretty cool overall I like how it gives off a old isometric horror game feel to it. Even though I know it would be better if I said a Crusader feeling because That was the guy I saw at the start and it is similar to the game but with better controls.

Whatever this project is looks really cool. I especially like the full 360 degree camera. Is there anything to set the camera? Like if I wanted to do a trick to look at a door? If there isn't a visibility cone for the player, would you think about adding it? Seeing it in action is fantastic. Better than I thought it would be and I thought it would be great.
Thanks! GZDoom allows you to spawn as many camera actors as you want. Switch views between them or show one camera's view in a corner of the screen. The fog of war only works up to subsector level. So while it is possible to add a visibility cone to the player, the changes will not be popular for the general case. You can code in a visibility cone for the AIs for gamplay if you want. It won't affect the renderer.
We need a fan made PSX version of "Project Overkill" mod

It is not a limitation, it is a complete and intentional feature.

Wow! Great work, really. But is the camera turning by buttons? In my opinion it would be cool if you can press RMB and turning camera with mouse instead, it would be more smooth. Also need camera distance scrolling. Good luck with this

I played Crusader as a kid and it really stuck with me. I thought it would be amazing to get a remake in the style of The Ascent. I'm learning aseprite for pixel art and literally drew that dude last night. would love to learn how to make stuff in this format.
That is awesome Chris. There have been many tools made over the years to extract sprites directly from the shapes.flx file from the original crusader games. They are all shady executables hosted on strange sites. You can find some on echosector.com . Most recently, DasCandy pubilshed the source code to do the same : github.com/dascandy/cnr
But you should start learning how to make simple maps for doom using tools like ultimate doom builder. It can be a lot of fun.
My code can handle isometric sprites, though I didn't show many of them here, except for the starting room (and the silencer).

There are multiple ways of doing room over room in GZDoom.

I don't see why 3D floors wouldn't be ideal with the isometric view, portals used for ROR might not, but IMO it's not really how you should be doing ROR most of the time to begin with.

hey is the mod able to run custom maps or do you NEED to use maps made for the mod?
You can play any map ever. The mod only affects player camera properties. I was playing the original Doom 2 (MAP03) towards the end there.
