One thing about us Boomers... the soundtrack of our lives is incredible! Peace
I always thank God that I was a teenager in the 1960s-1970s in the San Francisco Bay Area. Greatest time and place for music ever (well, maybe the UK too).
@@324cmac In '67 I wanted to be in SF for the Summer of Love so bad. But being a responsible 13 year old who didn't want to run away from home I missed it. It must have been magical to be there then.
@@arizrich My friend's mom would drive us down Haight Street to see all the long haired Hippies handing out flowers. The music during that time was amazing! I also loved the fashion.
@@324cmacit was Berzerkley in the 70s for me. Now I know why they say 'if you can remember it you weren't really there'
@@jimmoore8951 We weren't all overdoing the drugs. I lived in San Jose and was interested in what was happening in SF, Berkeley and Oakland. My bands were Tower of Power and Santana plus all the soul singing groups like The Whispers and The Spinners.
Court and Spark was a pivot album for Joni. It was the beginning of her transition from acoustic folk to a fusion of folk, rock and jazz. Help Me features Joni on acoustic rhythm guitar, and Larry Carlton on elec lead guitar. Joni wrote, produced and performed all the songs except for one cover, "Twisted" which is full blown jazz cover from the 1960s. She won her 2nd Grammy for Best Orchestral Arrangement on a Pop Song for the epic piano piece "Down to You". Her lyrics/ poetry are unsurpassed!
"Twisted" is absolutely great and the lyrics must be heard to appreciate it fully.
Larry’s outro on this is so sublime and peaceful. Makes the record for me.
Thanks for giving us all the lowdown. I remember when the album Court and Spark came out. I had liked Joni Mitchell’s earlier songs, like Carey and Big Yellow Taxi 0:03 , but when this came out, I was in high school and I was really ready for it. Later, I started to explore her earlier stuff and I’ve been a huge fan for many years now
@@brianherrington7226Perfect description.
Accurate!❤🎉😊
She is a freaking genius!!!!
Joni's contribution to music is sometimes over looked by some. Such a vitally important artist.
Can't overlook this one. it's one of those, you listen, shrug and just call it a perfect track.
I don't think it's overlooked. She has great respect from the whole music industry.
@@jackempson3044 I Agree, I should say overlooked by most people, even old school music fans.
Overlooked by who?
@@jaquestraw1not over looked at all
My fav joni tune ... it's all there. Maybe Free Man In Paris. I still say, to this day, "unfettered and alive."
Me too. 🔥
Joni is easily one of the best singer/songwriters of our time!! David Crosby said he believes her to be a better poet and songwriter than Bod Dylan. Please, check out A Case of You!! Appalachian dulcimer, plus James Taylor coming in on the acoustic. So glad to see you guys give her due appreciation!! Big fan of Jill Scott, also!
The hissing of summer lawns..... One of my favorites....
Guitarist was Larry Carlton!!! He is an absolute animal - you've heard much of his work in Steely Dan songs!!!
Joni wrote this song, at least partially, about Bob Seger who she dated. “Cuz you’re a rambler and a gambler and a sweet talking ladies man…” Also, Prince loved her!🖖🏼
i thought it was about graham nash?
The song as most of the songs of the album were written after her brief but intense relationship with Jackson Browne. "Car on a Hill" is explicitly about Jackson being very late to pick her up at her Laurel Canyon house for a date. The "Bob Seger song" reference is really a nod toward Glenn Frey, another of Joni's boyfriends around this time. Frey is from the Detroit area and was a protege of Seger's around the time "Rambling Gambling Man" was written.
Joni and Taylor Swift- many relationships inspiring many songs. Of course I can only listen to Joni.
Wasn’t Bob Seger.
Dickie Betts Rambling Man, Kenny Rogers the Gambler, Robert Plant Ramble On, etc. etc.
Featuring studio aces Tom Scott and the LA Express as her backing band. Joni had such a great feel for jazz progressions and timing. You gents should check out clips from her Shadows & Light concert, with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays and Don Alias as her backing band. Not a bad little combo Lol
Including Larry Carlton on guitar.
@@Straydogger For the Shadows & Light concert Pat Metheny was on guitar. Larry wasn't part of that touring band. He played the electric guitar on the album in the studio.
Shadows and Light is amazing.
Of this concert mentioned, her song Coyote is phenomenal. Jaco Pastorius on the bass was out of this world. If you're jazz fans at all, you will really appreciate it.
Canada doesn’t have a lot of superstars, but when they do, they are super.🇨🇦🎉🎶🎸😎
Her lyrics float like a butterfly, while her melodies sting like a bee.
Favorite artist of all time. Nothing like her. Real artist
Great memories of 1974 ..and Larry Carltons magic touch on the guitar.
One of my favorite beautiful songs
I'm so into Joni Mitchell right now. It's been fun.
Court and Spark was a fantastically produced and recorded album.
I still have, and still play, my Court and Spark LP.
This song "Help Me" from Joni Mitchell reminds me of "Hello It's Me" from Todd Rundgren due to the story telling and soft delivery in both of them. Just some great early 70's music by two overlooked artists in my opinion. I truly miss those days driving around hearing this music come on the radio. So much great music from the 60'-70' in all genres just had to pick a station and cruise.
Big Hello Taxi, You Turn Me On I'm A Radio, Free Man In Paris...just to name a few... Her contributions were immense
Some of my favorite lyrics ever, in this song, "we love our loving, but, not like we love our freedom."
David Crosby once called her a 'serial monogamist' . She wanted a relationship until she was in one.
Her song "Cactus Tree" Chronicles some of those early relationships with men wanting to own her but she was too much of a free spirit.
Shadows & Light concert, "Free Man in Paris" ...epic.
There is only one Joni, one of those artists you only need to use one name. I’ve been listening to her music for over 50 years. She is a giant in the music industry, also one of Prince’s favourite artists.
A masterpiece on every level.
She's incomparable ❤
To people of my generation (67), Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King, Bob Dylan, and Johan Baez, among others, proved themselves to be extremely competent poet/songwriter/lyricists, talented musicians, great performers, and carriers of messages. I would implore you to check out Eva Cassidy.
"Free Man In Paris" is your next step into Joni's catalogue!
Court snd Spark was a perfect example of the pinnacle of that LA studio production sound. At the time there was a deep pool of studio musicians that someone like Joni could draw from much like the Blue Note albums from the 50's where it was a group of very talented musicians who would play in all different combinations. This was also an album where Joni Mitchell was moving from her folk roots and did a deep dive into jazz and wound up playing with jazz greats like Jaco Pastorious and Pat Metheny.
I just found out about reaction videos two weeks ago and you two are in my top three, LOVE you guys! Your analysis of everything is so thoughtful. 60 year old scandanavian woman here, and I am loving this! The reaction movement is bridging generational, cultural, gender and racial barriers we are ALL just grooving to the music together! It's seeming like music is bringing the whole world together and maybe what the hippy peace and love generation wanted all along might be happening NOW before our eyes!
Rhythm guitar on the outro gives me Steely Dan.
This album is unbelievable! You guys need to check it out....called Court and Spark. Every song is a banger if you like Joni Mitchell. Her lyrics and delivery are mesmerizing. I love this song. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
SHADOW'S AND LIGHT
Joni Mitchell is a Legendary Singer/Songwriter. Capital L for a reason. Her albums Blue and Hejira a good place to start. Enjoy!!
She's a genius
SHE DOES IT ALL, ARRANGES, COMPOSES, ORCHESTRATES, ETC ET ETC!!! 😮IT'S INSANE AND OF COURSE AMAZINGLYYY AWESOME! 💯 😊AHHHHH, THAT'S WHY JANET SAMPLED ( BIG YELLOW TAXI ) MAKES SENSE, DOESN'T SURPRISE ME! NOW YOU HAVE ( ELTON & JONI ), 2 MASTER ROCK LEGENDS THAT'LL MAKE THE HAIR ON YOUR SKIN STAND, DOESN'T GET ANYYYYYY BETTER THAN THAT LA & CHE, AT LEAST FOR ME! 😊
My favorite Joni album, warm and subtly dynamic
Joni Mitchell is one of the greatest jazz singers of pop music.
She sings like an angel playing the sax. She’s one of the greatest songwriters of all time. 🕊❤️🎼
Joni is a phenominal singer/songwriter/musician and painter. You should listen to the album "Blue". Nothing like it ever. ❤
Joni is an artist without compare. No one like her, No One! She's a musician, a poet, a lyricist, an artist. Honestly her lyrics can break you and then heal you, she's just that good. And her VOICE, don't get me started. Please consider Blue, last time I saw Richard, people's parties/same situation, Amelia, etc.
She was one of Prince's favorites as well.
The chorus 🤯✌
The album this is from, Court and Spark, is a 10/10, no-skip, and well worth checking out. Amazing songwriting, production, and instrumentation.
OMG..I LOVE HER! Such a major talent. That voice! Love your reaction.
I saw Joni in concert with the Tom Scott Express and she was phenomenal. She is on my Mt. Rushmore of songwriters
Goosebumps all over every time. She's brilliant. ❤😊
Prince was a known HUGE Joni fan. She even remembers seeing him when he was young at a number of her concerts, before he was famous. He took a lot from her songwriting, too. She influenced so many influential people.
The great Joni Mitchell. Hugely influential. She's also the girl Robert Plant referred to in the song: "Going to California," the girl with "love in her eyes, and flowers in her hair....the Queen, without a king, who plays guitar, and cries, and sings...." Research her connection to Graham Nash + CSN.
We've lost the era of the singer songwriter. But I have hopes that guys like you will help bring it back. Diversity is the key. Keep it up.
there are thousands of singer/songwriters, you didn't lose them, you just chose not to pay attention to them
I gotta agree with the reply to this comment. There are thousands upon thousands of incredible singer/songwriters out there! In many ways we live currently in the greatest proliferation of intense creative output in the history of humankind! Like, right now! All you have to do is look beyond the radio and the big record companies and you will see a universe of talent out there!
Joni is lovely to the core.. The musicians she played with also played with Frank Zappa, Weather Report and etc.. A Phenomenon.
A Case of You and River-Joni's pinnacles.
All of the above, she is like a Bahamian sunrise with the gentle waves at your feet
Would love for you to react to more Joni, I have been a big fan of hers since I was 18. I’m 64 now and still highly appreciating her amazing music and lyrics.
An excellent choice. Joni voice makes the hair on my arms stand up. Excellent reaction fellas!!!Appreciate you 👏
Joni is on the Mt. Rushmore of singer songwriters of all time! All her early 6 of 7 albums are legendary .
Great reaction. Edith and the Kingpin. Just Like This Train. People's Parties.
LOVE JONI MITCHELL - agree with bearballin: Court & Spark was a GREAT ALBUM!!! Another of my favs on there: River!! Just SO, SO GOOD!!! How anyone could NOT like her tones is beyond me!! Interesting musical compositions and the lyrics: UGH!!! JUST WONDERFUL!!
When the great Charles Mingus was dying, it was Joni Mitchell that he called to transcribe his final works. She's legendary.
#FunFact 🤗 Prince used this in a Dorothy Parker chorus riff on his Black Album. The line goes....
🎤 'Help me! I think I'm falling in love.' Her phone rings and she says "whose ever calling can't be as cute as you!" Right there and then, I knew I was thru...
🤗 One of my favorite lines to sing from Dorothy Parker. The intricate word play on that Prince song is just killer. 🥰🐰
Joni is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of my lifetime. Prince said she was his favorite on the song Starfish and Coffee. She worked with Pat Matheny, Jaco pastorius , Herbi Hancock among others. Try the song Amelia.
Joni was a huge part of my musical journey growing up. This was played on all the great rock stations. ☮️❤️😎
Nobody kept it LIGHT!!~ SHE PRODUCED IT!!! And research how she influenced Led Zeppelin and how Robert Plant made his vocal choices after Led Zeppelin 2. She is singing that syrup realness, that style is called experience and skill and intelligence. She is really intelligent and she happens to have amazing talent which she worked on and PLAYED! She played with and without fellow artists. She insisted on finding her own voice and she took the time to find it.
55 years ago Monkee Mickey Dolenz filmed a great scene in Mama Cass' yard in Laurel Canyon. Crosslegged on the lawn, Joni strums a tune from her upcoming debut album beside producer David Crosby, and nearly touching knees with Eric Clapton, who stares with dropped jaw at her invented chord shapes.
I’m in trouble because your a rambler and a gambler, and a sweet talking... ladies man ... one of my very favorites.
The girl with the flower in her hair.
From Hissing of Summer Lawns album check out "Edith and the Kingpin" but the whole album is "fire" as the young people say!
Listen to the entire album “Court and Spark” a great vinyl to own…BTW that is Larry Carlton on lead guitar…you might remember his solo on Kid Charlemange
"Female Gil Scott" is such a great description!! Joni is in the upper stratosphere of musicians, singers and songwriters. One of the all time very best with an incredible catalog, VERY few can even come close to this extraordinary woman. GREAT VIDEO!!
I highly recommend Joni Mitchell live at the BBC “California” on which she plays the dulcimer
Ahhhhh our beautiful Canadian Poet…….lovin’ me some Joni Mitchell. Been on our airwaves since I was a kid. Ta boys! She has so much more for you to check out . She always kept it real in a really sweet delivery.💕👏👏👏 Oh! And she;s a multi talented musician check that out too…not just piano boys 😉
My favorite Joni Mitchell! Thanks for this.
Joni owns all of her music. I think she also produced it all and she designed the covers. Someone said something like "your music never resolves." and she replied something like " I'm a woman and we have a lot of things that never resolve.".
With Joni you are on a journey from folk to some of the awesomest jazziest music ever.
She toured with Pat Metheny, lead and Jaco Pastorius, bass, two legends in their own right, in her backup band.
You go guys.
Such straight-up honesty there is in Joni's lyrics.
Absolute genius. Canadian legend. ❤️🇨🇦✌️
“We love our loving-not like we love our freedom.” That’s seemingly been her ethos on relationships her whole life.
Consider this.......there is No One, with that amount of raw natural talent combined with such an incredible voice, around today that is capable of replacing / replicating Joni Mitchell.......Can you think of anyone??
Love your reactions !!!!
Maybe a little performer named Billie Eilish? I mean, come on. This Joni Mitchell person cannot stand her catalog up to someone like Billie or even Taylor Swift. This song compared to “Shake it Off?”
@@ugadawgs1990 .........some history for you.....
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joni_Mitchell#
@@ugadawgs1990You’re kidding, right?
Fiona Apple is a great singer, songwriter musician.
@@ugadawgs1990😂😂😂😂 ummm, NO!
Before Diana Krall and her ilk...Joni Mitchells voice was used to test high end audio equipment. It is that PURE
Joni uses different guitar open tunings on a lot of her songs. She's a complex free spirit and I love her! Also love the bari sax rifs on this song, like adding a little flavor to the mix. She's wonderful! I'm glad you guys get it! Good on you!
You guys are spot on about Joni. Her phrasing , cadence, and annunciation of the words she sings sets her apart from the average singer. When you hear her sing a song, you feel as if you're listening to a conversation. Joni's the best. 😄
Joni was the bridge between Folk and Jazz. Another major Artist with talent and vision. Saw this tour in 1974. Owned the Stage.
The instrumentation in this song is just out of this world. Not to mention her voice. One of the best recordings in history.
First time I have heard this beautiful song.
Joni is spitting jazz lyrics like a Tent Show Jazz Preacher. Jazzy lyrics and smooth music. Joni is constantly changing like a chameleon.
I love how much you guys dig Joni. Some of the heaviest jazz cats started playing with her as her writing became more and more sophisticated.
That song is smooth as a gravy sandwich .....great content also guys 👏
Justifiably blown away. She sings like a bird.
Joni is a legend. One of the greatest artists of her generation.
Great reaction
"She Jazzy..." -- haha yes, very jazzy indeed. Her vocal phrasing and overall concept were heavily influenced by Jazz (classical too). The music is both lyrically and harmonically complex and she sang like an angel. Some of the heaviest jazz legends around have either played with her or covered her songs. Joni is a badass of the highest order!
Takes me back to my senior year in high school . . . spring 1974 . . . desert oasis pop . . . love that ending fade-out, with those sultry chord changes . . .
What a great comparison to Gil Scott Heron. Never thought that, but it makes total sense.
Going to California by Led Z,, is about Joni..check it out if have not already..We love our Joni..thank you for loving her also..
Joni was a trail blazer! Greatness here! Even Prince identified her as one of the 5 best songwriters ever, her story telling skills are unmatched.
I swear, this is one of my best Joni Mitchell reactions ever....my 2nd time commenting...but the 4:03 to 4:06 reaction, has me in tears...lol. She was just that good
"Court and Spark," the album, is a genuine work of art. I love it.
Always loved this song thank you both for the great review.
Such a beautiful voice and wonderful lyrics. Music of the early '70's was so diverse...and SO good! Once again, just a great time to be a teenager. Muscle cars, fantastic music, and NO social media....plus mini-skirts and short shorts! 😬
Joni Mitchell is amazing! Worth your time to explore further.
I would love to see you react to her song “Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire” is on the album For The Roses which is just previous to Court and Spark. Dark and haunting yet also beautiful unique sound. Joni describes it “That was a song about the seduction of heroin, which I never did but which I was around.” And who she was around was her one time boyfriend, James Taylor.
Great song from a great, somewhat overlooked album.
This is like a thick sonic blanket in front of a cracklin' audio fireplace. Ahhh. It's been on my severely autistic son's playlist for years---a true, magic beast-soother single if ever there was one.
In that spirit I'd offer Firefall's "Strange Way." That's an ear-wormer and an on-a-dime stopper, too.
Hearing Joni now reminds me of how incredible her voice was back in her prime. She's a genius and a treasure. Clearly one of the greatest songwriters ever.
There’s simply no one like Joni. 👈
Joni is on another level than most of the popular music of the last fifty years.
