  • The Mandinka or Malinke are a West African ethnic group primarily found in southern Mali, the Gambia and eastern Guinea. Numbering about 11 million, they are the largest subgroup of the Mandé peoples and one of the largest ethnic-linguistic groups in Africa. In this video, I throw light on the history of the Malinke people of Africa.

The mende people from Sierra Leone also form part of the wider mande speakers and are related to the Mandinka. The mende were also part of the Mali empire. The mende are known for being a warlike tribe. After the ending of the empire they migrated South and conquered and assimilated other tribes. The mende people's migration meant that they were able to keep their traditional African religion.
