I‘m a German, 55 years and my husband was a Gambian. He died here in Germany in 2011 (cancer). Today he would have celebrated his 62nd birthday. In 1998 he took me to his country and we spent there two years. This was the most beautiful time of my life. For the first time, I felt like real living - I felt alive like never before. So, I want to say „Thank you“ to my husband again, who showed me a place where my soul could breath. Whenever I feel down, doubting what this life is all about, I go back in my mind and think of those glory days ❤

I’m Nigerian living in the UK and listening to this beautiful song by my Gambian sister this cold winter morning, great message, and do be kind to one another.
I am from Pakistan; when I was little, my parents moved us to Africa, and I was raised there. We had some wonderful times and made beautiful memories. My siblings and I learned the language, and remember it to this day. Now, we've left Africa, but to me, Africa is my childhood, Africans are my people, and African music often takes me back to that lovely place in my mind; a place of perfection. That's why I was drawn to this stellar song; it took me there again. Thank You for uploading it.

You're right. There are many Arabic words in Mandinka similar to Swahili I guess. I'm just fascinated how intertwined African languages really are. Africa must unite for it's people to take their rightful place on earth.
Mutie Mule ...It's not Arabic. I think you mean 'Afro-Asiatic'. The Afro-Asiatic language is extremely old and has existed long before Arabs entered Africa. Arabs only arrived in West Africa in 700 BC. However, Mandinka have had their language for over 10,000 years. These Mandinka people are responsible for some of the greatest empires in Africa. Songhai, Mali, and Ghana Empire was created by their ancestors. I’m even thinking it was their ancestors that ruled Pre-historic Egypt at one point before they migrated to West Africa due to Invasions/also due to the spread of the Sahara. The Mandinka, Soninke and Songhai people and their history are beyond fascinating. Let’s not even talk about their music - they are the founders of the Saharan 'Desert Blues' music style. Ali Farka Toure is one of them. These people are full of so much culture and history. They are also very closely related to the Dogon. The only difference is that the Dogon are not Muslim and have maintained the pre-Islamic traditions. You should read about them.
I am Congolese 🇨🇩, I don't know the lyrics of this song, but I am totally in love with it. It's one of my favourites songs, I am feeling African; my culture, my music, my peoples. Love Africa 🌍
She is singing Mandinka my language I can help you to translate it to you. She was just praising Gambia and she said as a Gambian no matter wherever you are or you go never forget that you are from the Gambia...... More
This is truly soul music. As both an African and an American living in US, this is proof that if you put out authentic music and art from your spirit that the world will consume it and value it

I don’t know what is more beautiful about her, her masterful playing or that almost childish voice or her appearance..I’m not even sure Sona Jobarte even exists or if she is some kind of a fairy or a melek (angel). Well said! There is but one human race on this planet called homo sapiens. All other races like Neanderthals, homo erectus etc. have long died out. Let's remember that :-)
I am with you in the meaning of your post, but Gambia is independent from UK just since 1965 and the official language is english... I love Gambia and his people, that´s why I use to travel up to 5 times to the smiling coast and visiting my gambian firends... Steffen from Germany--- I am a Tubab (for insiders). ;-)
Sona's melodic, clear sweet voice soothes my voice and makes me so happy! I lived in the Gambia for a while and loved everything about it, especially the people, music and food!
@Moe Rocco Some Moroccans don't like being associated with Africa, for their own strange reasons!! Sona Jobarte in that song says he who turns his back on his own motherland forgets who he is! Morocco you're a son of Mama Afrika, never denounce nor insult her ever by word or deed. Love from Kenya.

The Gambia
Built in peace and stability,
hosted by development and progress,
Humanity
and happiness is on all faces,
our outstanding country Gambia.
Wherever you are
, never forget
your homeland Gambia
For if you forget your roots,
you turn your back on who you are.
(Refrain):
We are proud…
We are proud of our country
(Refrain):
We are proud…
Let us come together and unite
(Refrain):
We are proud…
This is what will result in progress
People of the Gambia; this is the beautiful land
People of the Gambia; this is the peaceful land
People of the Gambia; this is the land of our people
People of the Gambia; there is nothing that compares to this land
People honour this country because it is blessed
We should not abandon our beautiful country
Sons/daughters of this land, let us come to together
I will truly always be proud to be a Gambian
Wherever I travel, I shall tell of the wonders of this country
There is nowhere that compares to Gambia
Outro:
The home of Peace… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Blessings… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Humility… everyone say “Gambia”
The home of Family… everyone say “Gambia”

Proud I have kissed the earth of five African countries! More recently .... Tanzania! Will see see Gambia soon. Thank you Sona for giving me the sound of the Spiritual Continent! Love always ❤🎉😂
D T Thank You for your kind words brother. God bless you. Peace & love.
I appreciate you. I am from Zambia. This music speaks to me even if don't understand the language

@@NCXitlali Lucky him that was moved to Africa! Most spectacular continent! I wish I were African!
Funny how some people refer to Africa like it is a country.

ESSE RITMO É AFROBEAT, NÃO É?
at the risk of sounding very, very trite, the music of Sona is uplifting, joyful and full of hope. Thank you, Sona Joubarteh.
Shame on me for discovering you in 2019. This song is a gem. Mandinka sounds like a mix of Arabic + Swahili.
Love from KENYA
Am a kenyan but I love this song ... i dont understand the words but enjoy it
@@JoStylin well said
There is no Arabic in the language, and no Swahili neither
I am Congolese 🇨🇩, I don't know the lyrics of this song, but I am totally in love with it. It's one of my favourites songs, I am feeling African; my culture, my music, my peoples. Love Africa 🌍
