Is your family from VA or surrounding states? I am in an active VA tribe and all of our older records and birth certificates say mulatto or POC (people of color). Idk if you know who Walter Plecker is but he destroyed the Virginia tribes (indigenous). My tribe just got our state recognition 20 or 30 years ago due to his laws.

Sullivan is bomb! The colorist lyrics is a NO. I’m a “white passing” Latina (or so I been told not that I’m proud of it but I am aware of my privilege). I had a daughter w bi-racial man. His father was dark skinned, his mom white. He is the lightest out of his siblings. I have melanin on my side from both my parents families (my mom has more melanin than my daughters father). My family were all hoping my daughter would turn out brown bc we understood she can come out any shade darker than both of us bc our genes and bc we love beautiful brown and black skin. So this belief that bc you caramel, red bone or any shade lighter than brown/black is a fallacy and contributes to colorism and anti-blackness.
But why were ya'll praying about what colour the kid comes out. That's mad weird. Normal people pray for a healthy baby and whether it's a boy or a girl, not what colour it will come out as.

Imho, her music just isn't catchy (aka formulaic). Nothing to do with it R&B. Despite traditional R&B's decline in popularity, there's STILL a such thing as a catchy R&B tune. Chrisette Michelle's (who I can't stand) hits "Blame it On Me" and "A Couple of Forevers" are examples of being able to be Gospel-soulful in radio-friendly way. So are some of Ledisi's songs. Ne-Yo wrote two awesome tunes for En Vogue and TLC. Jazmine Sullivan's tunes don't call out to me all that much like her three or four well-known hits did. This R&B version of the coffee house singer-songwriter thing is a snooze.
