It's always heartbreaking to hear about an animal being abandoned, particularly a baby elephant. Elephants are social animals, and the bond between a mother and her calf is incredibly strong. It's difficult to know the reasons behind the abandonment, but it's possible that the mother was unable to care for the calf due to illness or injury. In cases like these, it's important for humans to step in and provide the necessary care and attention to ensure the survival of the young animal.

The sight of a baby elephant abandoned by its mother can be a heart-wrenching experience. Elephants are known for their strong familial bonds, and a mother's rejection of her offspring is rare and unusual. While the reasons for this behavior can vary, it's important to remember that nature can be unpredictable and sometimes harsh. Fortunately, there are many organizations and individuals dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants, providing them with the care and support they need to thrive.

There are humans who abandon their kids, we think that elephants have human-like emotions in regards to mourning and things like that, it stands to reason they probably also have human-like reactions to other sides of their lives, including rejecting babies ^^

The mother rejected the calf perhaps knowing that it has little chance of survival due to some illness or defect that she knows and could detect. If the calf is healthy it will be accepted and nurtured. If not, it will be abandoned. Its just animal instinct. There is no right or wrong. That is only applicable to us humans.

It probably was sick. They can sense stuff we can't. 😅
Or they tracked the wrong herd. They probably seen a herd and assumed it was hers and tried to force the baby into it. Just because the baby walked up to the herd doesn't mean it was her family, she's young and didn't know any better and will suckle from anyone and just wanted to be loved.
Those are most likely the main reasons for rejection, sickness or it's not her herd.

When I read about an abandoned calf, I always wonder--if through INSTINCTS that we lack--the mother somehow knows that the infant is in poor health.
The abandonment is completely contrary to everything WE THINK WE KNOW about elephant society and mother/calf interaction. It just doesn't make any sense. We'll never really know.

Sometimes an animal in the wild will abandon their young, if they have some kind of illness.
This calf probably wouldn't survive any how, because of its size.
    Was it perhaps a premie?
    Was it perhaps blind?
    Was it deaf?
Did it have intestinal problems where it would die anyhow, because it couldn't keep food in its system?
    Did it have digestive problems?
In the wild, a mother would know instinctively, that her baby wouldn't survive! So they usually abandon their young.

  • @rickson50

I hate to say it, but if they took this abandoned calf from the forest it may have interrupted the circle of life. . I can’t help but wonder if by doing so, they deprived one of the carnivores in the area access to an easy meal, one that may have provided food for offspring, and potentially set off a chain of events that led to an even greater loss of life than one elephant calf. Devastating when you think about it. 😢

    • @alexburke1899
      @alexburke1899 11 місяців тому +1

We already affect that circle of life though, poachers kill an elephant a day of more so saving the occasional baby elephant that’s a threatened species only makes up for the constant damage we do. I mean sure a more endangered tiger could have eaten the somewhat endangered elephant but the odds of that happening seem negligible.
I was a amateur wildlife videographer for a while and don’t believe in interfering with natural selection but in India and Africa where wildlife has been hunted to near extinction I don’t have a moral dilemma helping some of the more endangered or vulnerable species.
