    Thanks so much to Rabid Retrospect and MKIceAndFire for the gameplay footage. If you have not checked out their stuff, they upload consistently high quality gameplay footage of every major release, and are a wealth of reference footage for those of us in the game industry (especially audio) who need to study and reference clips often. Thanks again.

    I think your assessment of Zelda is spot on. A lot of game developers are focusing on trying to make their worlds more 'immersive' by stacking a ludicrous amount of layers upon each other, while sometimes the mundane simplicity of reality (especially in games where exploration is core gameplay) can provide a much more meaningful and engaging experience.

    Breath of the Wild is a fascinating game in so many ways. I didn't expect it to live up to the over-the-top critical acclaim for me, but it did.
    I think it's also worth considering the audio design in the context of the Switch (and the Wii-U to a lesser degree) as a portable/hybrid system. I wonder how much that influenced their approach. How many players experienced it with headphones? With the system's built-in speakers? Docked and through a home entertainment system? Muted the sound? Played it in loud public spaces? Played it outside (disturbing)?

      that was one of the reasons I gave the award to breath of the wild. They were able to give an incredible experience with probably 1/5th of the audio budget (RAM memory and cpu) as any other contemporary AAA title. A game like hellblade places limitations with headphones on how the player can experience the game but botw works within much stricter guidelines to provide a much more fulfilling experience in my opinion.

    I also love naturalism (Subnautica also did it really well a lot of the time even if the sounds are a bit buggy), but this year also heralded one of the best music mixing games in NieR: Automata using a matured version of Platinum's mixing from MGR: Revengeance.

    This is wrong. You pick Zelda as the winner in a video you titled BEST SOUNDING, not best sound design.
    I wouldn't complain except that in the video you say it's not about being the best sounding or most impressive, but eliciting a mood. If a game had no audio other than some moody soundtrack it would still elicit a mood, but I personally don't like to include OST's in game audio since it's basically completely independent outside of a mood or theme.

      @MarshallMcGee  5 років тому

      I disagree

    • @JZStudiosonline
      @JZStudiosonline 5 років тому +2

      @@MarshallMcGee You would!
      I just feel like theres a difference between best sound and best sound design. I know you did a little dev interview with Guerrilla games on Horizon Zero Dawn, but after playing through it myself with no music, that game and The Witcher 3 are tied for my "best sound" category, especially in surround sound. The sounds themselves are all fantastic, enveloping, and they transition so smoothly between speakers you can pinpoint sound sources.
      You didn't even really mention it.
      I haven't played Zelda, but I will agree that it does seem a lot more atmospheric, and you made good points. It's more like... art direction for sound, and I do believe it should be applauded for that, especially since it seemed like fans were disappointed with the essential "lack" of a soundtrack. I think audio should have more "awards" like picture does. Art design, direction, cinematography, etc.. Why limit audio to just one category? Or... I guess two if you separate OST's.

    Marshall McGee, about the "gun tails" that you mention at 02:00: Having both sharp and accurate firing sound attacks and also nice, big tails at the end of firing are not mutually exclusive things! They're not. Tails can be adjusted to play loud only after a tiny delay for example, so the maximum fire rate of a handgun or similar won't let the tails get loud before the player actually takes a pause from shooting. Gunshot tails are a huge part of making the guns sound realistic and loud, especially in an outdoor setting! Listen to Battlefield games for example, at least from 3 onward. Do they sound like "muddied" in their firefights?
    I'm sorry, your quick analysis of the matter simply came forth as arrogant to me.

    • @MarshallMcGee
      @MarshallMcGee  6 років тому +2

      The longer your gun tail, the more time and audio spectrum you are dedicating to the player gunshot. The delay you are talking about is already a given when designing great gun tails, but in AAA game development the gun tail competes much more with the other sounds in the game than just the initial transient of the gunshot. That’s not the issue. For example, I can make a long gun tail sound awesome with the close shot of that gun, but can I make it work with the 45 other sounds playing in the span of that 3 second tail? That’s a much harder task. So my analysis was based on the idea of the mix as a whole not just the single gunshot.

    I wish more games used binaural audio capturing

    • @jcp1984again
      @jcp1984again 6 років тому +1

      It's not always the capturing itself, but instead of how do you mix the game in Wwise or similar audio engine. You have to take position and distance variables to account and that doesn't always work with a binaural recording technique.
