Hi Grant! Just found your channel and have been binge watching your videos - very informative! We sailed the NCL Breakaway in March 2020 (last NCL cruise before lockdown). We’ve booked a Panama Canal cruise aboard the Bliss in Feb. 2023, and cannot wait!
Kerreyn! Thank you so much for your kind message! It means the most to me that the video I'm making are helping folks. New video on the way next week, so please keep your eyes peeled.
Pre-planning is essential on a cruise. I like to settle in the first day rather than trying to scurry to plan on the first day. This is more difficult for first time NCL cruisers. Pre-book the popular specialty dining. Cagneys and Le Bistro always book up fast so get in there before. Moderna and LA Cucina are generally slower. If you really want to see a show, then book that too. Then you are good to go. @@AllThingsWagner great question! I’m hoping to do my next cruise in the spring but currently on the NCL Star for another week. Hello from Buzios Brazil 🇧🇷
Hi Duane 👋 Thank you so much for the kind message ❤️ I'm so excited for your solo cruise. I know you'll have a great time! Where will you be visiting on your cruise?
Hi Grant! Love your content. Is there a way to find out when the Buffett has seafood or taco nights? I’ve made reservations for specialty that clashed with theme nights in buffet. Trying to avoid that if possible
Hi Nadia 👋 Great question! So if you’re curious about speciality nights the Freestyle you get each day will tell you the theme in the buffet and also the special at the casual restaurant. In terms of planning ahead there’s no simple way but I usually find if you ask a restaurant manager or supervisor about a specific night they can let you know where it falls on the schedule. I love the lamb night in the main dining and so have done this a few times. Hope this helps!!
Hi Grant. After we disembark, we have a few hours to kill before the Empire builder leaves for Chicago, ant ideas we can spend our tim e while waiting.. than you. kind regards. mark
Hi Mark 👋 Thanks for your question, sorry for the delay in responding. The answer is that it will depend on the time that your ship gets into port. Most cruises the ship docks around 7am with guests having to disembark by around 9am at the latest so that they can have time to turnover the ship for the next cruise. I think 9:30am is the latest that I've ever stayed on board and that's taking my own luggage off the ship. I hope this is helpful! Have a fantastic day!
Hi Wanda 👋 So sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You can definitely book the dining ahead of time on the website or through the NCL app. They don't need you to specify that's it's Free at Sea until you're on board, when you get to the restaurant they'll ask if you're using your perks, any dining packages you may purchase or if you're paying a la carte. Very convenient!! Thanks so much for your lovely comments! It really makes me happy to hear that my videos are helpful. Wishing you a beautiful day!
Hi Laura 👋 Yep, you only need to be connected to the ship's wifi (but you don't actually have to be connected to the internet i.e. you don't have to use your minutes to use the app). I hope that this helps!
Thanks for the kind words! I'm so happy to hear that the videos are helping folks! More good stuff coming in just over a week. trying out Mondays for posting new videos : )
Hi Grant new subscriber love your content. Going on the Escape end of March. I booked 3 specialty restaurants as Cagney’s became available later. And as of now Kinky Boots is no longer on the Encore just one production show Choir of Man, we had booked a cruise on the Encore in man mostly for the entertainment now they are going cheep and only offering the one show.
Hi Ray 👋 Thanks for sharing. I've heard about this too! My upcoming video will be talking about some of the changes (both good and not so good) that are coming to NCL in 2023. I certainly can understand why you're feeling frustrated. They were just "installing" Kinky Boots when I was on the Encore last year so the first of my back to back cruises it wasn't available. I certainly would feel disappointed too, it's one of my favourites
One feature I liked on the Breakaway was that at the elevators you could see the deck plan for the floor you were on as well as a red dot to indicate your current position. This was at both sets of elevators on every floor. I found it a quick way to orient myself in relation to where I wanted to go. After a few days I only used it if I needed it but on the first days it was super handy. If you left your map or phone behind you could still go to the elevators and know where to go.
Hi Dick 👋 Agreed the guides by the elevators are a huge help to remember what's on each floor, I also find myself frequently using the maps outside the hallways on each floor to remember where my room is. I usually only get disoriented on the first day or two then my NCL compass kicks in! 🤣
Hi Doni 👋 if you’ve downloaded the app you just connect to the wifi signal on board and the app will work. No need to purchase wifi to use most features on the app, except the guest to guest messaging. Hope this helps!
Do you recall if people were allowed to decorate their cabin door? So you remember seeing any decorations on some people's doors? Also did you get any motion sickness?
Hi Haydee 👋 On my last cruise (it was around Christmas) lots of folks had decorated their doors and there didn't appear to be any issues. As to motion sickness that's a hard thing to gauge as it's so personal. The clue is usually when they put motion sickness bags out during rough seas, but again it really depends on your sailing, where you're going and how the ocean is behaving (or not 🤪)
I get motion sickness sailing in the Atlantic, but not in the Caribbean area. We've caught some rough seas. I use a Scopalomine patch from the doctor, and bring Dramamine just in case.
Are deck plans on the app, not available until you board ship? I don’t have it on my phone using the iOS app, but we don’t sail until February 22? 🤷🏻♀️
Hi there 👋, great question. The deck plans don’t show up until your onboard where the app options change. You can always look on the NCL website for all the ship deck plans any time.
Thank for the kind feedback! I'm sure you'll love NCL. I hope you'll also check out some of the other videos I've made; more good stuff on the way soon, including one about how to get on board credit ; )
Hi Grant, came across your videos and they are very informative as I have not cruised in many years. I am going on the Beach Boys Cruise in March on the NCL Pearl and had a question about the app. I downloaded the app but was wondering if NCL is going to charge roaming fees when I use it on the ship. I am not purchasing a WiFi plan and using my phone for pictures only. Please advise. Thanks.
Hi Zoraida 👋 Thanks for the kind words! Wow, a Beach Boys cruise that sounds fun! I love the Pearl, I had a chance to sail the Panama Canal on that ship back in 2018. About the app, there are no fees for using it on the ship, it doesn't need / use any internet minutes for the basic features e.g. to see the schedule, make reservations, book excursions, etc. Just be sure to have the app downloaded in advance and you're good to go! Hope this helps!
Grant, Thank you for the video! This will be our first Norwegian cruise. How many nights was your Encore cruise. We are on a 7 night Breakaway Cruise and hope Six is running more then one night. Thank you for your help.
Hi Todd, exciting your first NCL cruise! I know that you'll have a fantastic time. I actually did two, seven day cruises back to back on the Encore in April (I was originally booked on the Escape, but it required some maintenance). The trip was great! I loved the Choir of Man, which I probably saw 6 times, and Kinky Boots! I've heard great thinks about Six (even started listening to the soundtrack myself). Would love to get your thoughts when you're back! If you have any other questions you can always message me on Instagram @cruisewithgrant
What do you suggest the best way to get the on-board entertainment booked when you get on the ship? This is my first time with Norwegian but my last cruise with Royal Caribbean was really difficult to book entertainment on their app and I'd like the least stressful way to get everything done
I'm 79 years old and i cruise solo. I don't think i can do all that was said in this video, especially since i've never been on this ship before. I have sailed with NCL twice in the past but those old days were very different and i don't remember doing any of what you said. Should i climb onboard and figure out how to make my way around anyhow? Thanks for any response.
Hi Tammy, welcome to the channel! Great question! There is no cost for reservations for the shows. Some of the larger ships have a dinner theatre and that has a separate charge, but otherwise all entertainment is included. The Encore was amazing, it was my first time, but certainly won't be my last! I didn't make it to the Galaxy Pavilion for some VR fun! 🤓
We have cruised with NCL once before and have our second cruise booked for Alaska in October 2022 on the Jewell. Since for both cruises we know which restaurants we want to dine in and on what nights, we have already made our reservations. This way, we are assured to get what we want when we want. Once on board, if you don't make reservations quickly, you can sometimes find yourself forced to dine much earlier or later than you would have preferred. I would suggest that if you know what dining and/or entertainment you want to enjoy and when, then you make your reservations as early as possible -- even before boarding -- to avoid disappointment. Oh, and if the show you want to see is only presented on one day, book that first, then work your dining reservations around that.
Thanks Timothy for sharing, I love how generous our cruise community is sharing with each other! I also definitely recommend doing any pre-reservations online. My last 3 cruises many of the pre-reservations before boarding were not available so something to keep an eye out for. Would love to hear about your experience on the Jewel. Hoping to take my next cruise end of year too! Wishing you safe and happy sailing!
I am sailing on my first cruise, Encore, in July. How bad are the lines to makes your show and dining reservations on day one? Also, is it better to board early to be able to make those reservations or do they not open the reservations until everyone is onboard?
I’m looking for information on tipping our butler on NCL Breakaway. I was told our prepaid gratuities don’t include the butlers. Could you clarify this concern?
Hi Terri, I had to look this one up as I don't have any experience with the Haven myself (at least not yet, still dreaming). The NCL website does say that staff who provide individualized services do not receive the money that's collected in the form of service charges. So if you want to recognize them for amazing service that would be on top of the cost of the cruise and service charges. I've put a link below the NCL website where this is indicated. Hope that this helps! www.ncl.com/ca/en/cruise-faq/what-about-gratuities
Haha!! You're oddly the first person to ask! NCL has some amazing game shows on board. Especially on the smaller ships I love taking part. This one was the perfect couple game, that I took part in with a new friend I met on board (we weren't an actual couple just to be clear), but we certainly delivered entertainment. I won't spoil the challenges that made up this show! Lots of other great gameshows! I also OWNED battle of the sexes on my last cruise on the Encore! 👑
Thanks for all the great tips as this is our first cruise! Wondering when food is first available on day 1. We sail at 4pm but I know you board earlier than that. Do we need to eat lunch before we get to the port because meals start with dinner? And what happens when we disembark (we dock at 7am) - do we get breakfast or are we on our own that day? Thanks!
Hi Lori 👋 Sorry for the delay in responding, I'm just getting myself settled after being away on a cruise myself. On embarkation day food is available pretty much right away, but not at all of the venues on the ship. The buffet is always open and usually the 24/7 pub (O'Sheehans or the Local). I would suggest having some snacks as boarding can take as little as 30 minutes or as long as 3 hours depending on the situation, but you can eat right away as soon as you're on board. On disembarkation day (and please have a look at my video with tips for this too!) you'll have food offered, but again it will be limited to certain venues like the buffet and usually for shorter hours so the crew have time to prepare for the next cruise. I hope this is helpful! When is your cruise coming up?
We leave in 10 days! March 5th! I am also wondering: do guys need to wear long pants/collared shirts in the dining rooms for breakfast and lunch meals or only for dinner time?
Another great video Grant. It is making me wish my sail date on the Encore was sooner. I am so excited to try cruising for the first time. Question that maybe you can help me with. So my booking is for 2 people, my friend and me. We have friends that are also going to be on the same cruise and we would like to eat together as a group of four and possibly sit together at some of the entertainment. When I am able to make reservations for dinner or an event, will I be able to make reservations for 4? Or will I only be able to do 2 and need to ask the staff to seat us together? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.... Jason
Hi Jason! Thanks for the kind words. The Encore was great, I really enjoyed it alot! You can definitely make reservations for dining for more than who is in your cabin. I travel solo often and so make a reservation for extras to invite some new friends. Entertainment you will likely have to do on your own (or go together to the box office), it's a bit different as there's no assigned seating so you'll have to arrive early (30 mins or so) to get good seats together. Hope this help! Feel free to drop any other questions here! Stay tuned for my next video coming soon about how to get on board credit!
@@CruisewithGrant Thank you so much for the information. I am looking forward to your additional videos. You have helped take some of the anxiety away. I have the 3 specialty dinning as part of my trip. Do you think it is a good ratio of specialty vs the main dining rooms/other dining options. jay
@@jasonlizotte4007 it makes me so happy to hear that the videos are helpful! ❤ In terms of specialty dining I would say it depends on the ship you're sailing on as well as the length of your cruise. Personally I think 2-3 are great for a 7 day cruise, 5-6 is the magic number for me for a 14 day cruise. I also really enjoy the complimentary main dining rooms. My favourites are lamb shank night, and also the bacon-wrapped shrimp and grits. Very delish! 😋
Hi Janae 👋 thanks for the good question. When you check in you can opt to connect a credit card to your account and then you simply use your cruise / key card for all on board spending. There are ways to pay for your account with cash but you won’t be able to pay for or buy things with cash except in the casino 🎰
Hi Ang Marie 👋 That's a great question and the answer is well... it depends. Depending on the sailing I've found that they open up reservations on the app / online ahead of times, and other they say you need to book once on board. I have a cruise coming up soon and I've also noted that for some fixed price restaurants like Moderno and Teppanyaki it's also saying I need to pay in order to make a reservation. I'm hoping that some of these are just a technical glitch that will be sorted out as they continue to improve their apps. Hope this is helpful!

Hi there! I hope the video was helpful! I was on the Encore in April, and they actually "installed" Kinky Boots while I was on board so it started the second week of my back to back. A big shout out to "Mama" Luz Brilliantes and the brilliant production team on board who made sure things when off without a hitch! 💄 👢 💅
Hi Alana, I've had a similar experience on my last two cruises where they were not taking reservations before boarding. I'm not sure the reasoning behind this, but you can definitely book on board as I mentioned in the video, just want to scoot over and do this early on your first day. I hope you'll have a wonderful time on the Bliss! Are you doing the re-positioning cruise? It looks great!
@@CruisewithGrant thank you for replying! :) I'll make sure to try to get all entertainment booked the day of boarding! :) and no we are leaving from LA and coming back to the same port. It's a 5 day cruise to cabo and Ensenada

Hi Anthony 👋 That's a great question, I've sailed with two other cruise lines and so far NCL is the one that feels like home. I am looking at checking out some of the other cruise lines, it's always important to compare as they all have different things to offer. What about you, have you tried many cruise lines?
I have the app but haven’t used it onboard, only leading up to the cruise. I’m assuming being on the app chews into the applicable minutes of the WiFi package you have?
Hi Brant. Nope thankfully using the app on board doesn't use any of your wifi minutes. There's a separate login you must do to start the timer on your internet minutes. Hope this helps! 😊 I had the same question on my previous cruises 🛳
Hi,Grant. Can stop asking. If my cruise( already paid full),has a price reduction and is offering On board credit, may I get credit also? Becaeuse of the new offers? Thanks🙂
The app is the worst. It hardly works and you will have to login multiple times. Also the internet desk is not much help. If my team ever developed an app this bad -- they would be out. These problems have been around for awhile.
Hi there! Absolutely, you can request the robe for free to use during your cruise. Now if you want to keep it after that there's a charge. Hope this helps, happy cruising!
Found your channel as I’m researching how to prep for my first ever cruise this November. I’m going on the NCL Bliss so I’m very excited! I wanted to ask, I’ve seen soooo many videos of cruisers saying that I should be flying in the day before the cruise. This just isn’t possible for me (plus I live 6-8hrs driving time from the port so if push comes to shove I can drive) but what time do you think I should choose to check in? My instinct is to pick a later time in case our flight gets delayed *knock on wood* but I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️
If your flight is delayed, you could miss your cruise. An 8 hour drive could easily become a 16 drive if everything goes wrong. Yes I have been on a holiday/vacation where we had a flat tyre, not five minutes after getting the flat fixed, we had another flat tyre (group of us, several cars and yes we all waited for the flat tyre sufferers) So suppose you have a flat, then a major roadway is closed or congested, then bad weather slows traffic. Is it worth risking your cruise? Arrive the day before.
Hi Abby! Thanks for the great question. I totally recommend getting in the day before if possible. On my most recent trips my flights were delayed over 1hr because of technical difficulties. It's certainly stressful if you're not sure you'll make it. That being said I haven't always followed my advice and I've made every sailing. I certainly would opt for early arrival if you can spare it. Definitely choosing a later check in time is great, I find the lineups are usually less as people want to get on board early. Hope this helps!! 😊
Absolutely right Kari, definitely don't miss the opportunity if it's available to do this online or using the App in advance. I've found that some restaurants haven't been available for reservations, along with some of the entertainment so definitely wanted to recommend as a first day priority. Thanks for watching and sharing your tips with our cruise community! 😊

Josee you're so kind! 🥰 Thank you so much! The app doesn't require the wifi to be able to see the schedule, make reservations and check your onboard account.
If I need anything, I just try to ask for changes a day or so in advance or be flexible and have a different option or experience in mind.

Thanks for the support Jared!! 🙌
Great video Grant, do you tip your room steward?
Wow didn’t know you have to make reservations for the shows. Have never experienced that on other ships I’ve been on.

Hi Robin 👋 You're most welcome! I hope you're having a super day! Any cruises lined up for you?
Hi Grant. After we disembark, we have a few hours to kill before the Empire builder leaves for Chicago, ant ideas we can spend our tim e while waiting.. than you. kind regards. mark
Hi, NCL Bliss, how long can we stay on board after end of cruise, we are going to Seattle Amtrak for an afternoon train
Hi Grant. With the free at sea specialty dining, can we pre book this or do we do it when we board the Encore. Love your videos, thanks
So can the app be used when you are in airplane mode?
Hi Laura 👋 Yep, you only need to be connected to the ship's wifi (but you don't actually have to be connected to the internet i.e. you don't have to use your minutes to use the app). I hope that this helps!
Thank you Grant. Great tips!!!

Hello Grant. I saw in another video that we will need to take electricity converters. Is that true?
H Grant, Once we have disembarked in Seattle, our Amtrak train to Chicago dose not leave till 16.45, any suggestions?
I have a question how does the Notwegian App work if you don’t have WI-FI or phone package ??
The clue is usually when they put motion sickness bags out during rough seas, but again it really depends on your sailing, where you're going and how the ocean is behaving (or not 🤪)
@@CruisewithGrant and this was on ncl? cause i heard they banned decorating in 2019 but wondered if the ban is still in effect or not enforced.
I can't wait to go on a Norwegian cruise!! Great tips!

Hey Grant!! On Getaway now. Any anchovies 2 day??
Haha okay now you’ve given me a clue 😎😜 none yet today but the day is young
Do you make reservations for comedy and entertainment on the Sky
Thanks! When you make reservations for shows, do they charge extra for the reservation? Also, I was wondering how you liked Encore?
That's my advice too! Grants advice is great bc some people aren't planners. I am a planner and then I can relax.
How far in advance can you make reservations for specialty dining and shows?
"If you're not into squinting" 🤣🤣
I am sailing on my first cruise, Encore, in July. How bad are the lines to makes your show and dining reservations on day one? Also, is it better to board early to be able to make those reservations or do they not open the reservations until everyone is onboard?
Book them via the app _before_ boarding! The queues at customer services can be well over 60 minutes.
Thank you for the tips and love your shirt!
Thanks Christina for the kind words, including about my shirt. I'm so delightfully surprised about how big a hit the shirt has been ; )

What was going on at 0:37 lol?
@@CruisewithGrant Amazing, it looked like fun!

What is the best way to pay for things on the ship? Is it better to carry cash or a credit card?
Hi Janae 👋 thanks for the good question. When you check in you can opt to connect a credit card to your account and then you simply use your cruise / key card for all on board spending. There are ways to pay for your account with cash but you won’t be able to pay for or buy things with cash except in the casino 🎰
Can you not make reservations on the app prior to your cruise? Or do you have to wait until you're onboard?
Hi Ang Marie 👋 That's a great question and the answer is well... it depends. Depending on the sailing I've found that they open up reservations on the app / online ahead of times, and other they say you need to book once on board. I have a cruise coming up soon and I've also noted that for some fixed price restaurants like Moderno and Teppanyaki it's also saying I need to pay in order to make a reservation. I'm hoping that some of these are just a technical glitch that will be sorted out as they continue to improve their apps. Hope this is helpful!

Hi, thank you for the video. Question, when did you sail? And is Kinky Boots back? I thought they were only running Choir Of Man only?
Hi there! I hope the video was helpful! I was on the Encore in April, and they actually "installed" Kinky Boots while I was on board so it started the second week of my back to back. A big shout out to "Mama" Luz Brilliantes and the brilliant production team on board who made sure things when off without a hitch! 💄 👢 💅
Hello! I'm sailing on the bliss this November and trying to pre book my entertainment but it's not available for prebooking? Has this changed?

Hey Grant,
Is NCL your favorite cruise line?
Hi Anthony 👋 That's a great question, I've sailed with two other cruise lines and so far NCL is the one that feels like home. How soon after booking cruise can you pick speciality dinner reservations on the app? Thanks
These problems have been around for awhile.
is the bath robe complimentary??
Yes I have been on a holiday/vacation where we had a flat tyre, not five minutes after getting the flat fixed, we had another flat tyre (group of us, several cars and yes we all waited for the flat tyre sufferers)
So suppose you have a flat, then a major roadway is closed or congested, then bad weather slows traffic.
@@CruisewithGrant thank you!!

Thanks Don, it's a favourite! 🥰
Make your reservations for dining and excursions before you cruise!
Hi Grant, I sailed NCL Jade in 2019. At that Time the apps was probably just started or not. Is the wi-fi required to use the apps ? 🤔
BTW I just started to match your videos and they are so informatives, I am sharing all of them to friends.🤩
Josee you're so kind! 🥰 Thank you so much! The app doesn't require the wifi to be able to see the schedule, make reservations and check your onboard account. But you do need to download it and login to your NCL account before you're onboard. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to reach out on Instagram @cruisewothgrant 😊
