    On May 2, 1939, Lou Gehrig (the “Iron Horse”) of the New York Yankees removed himself from the line-up against the Detroit Tigers after having played 2,130 consecutive games.
    This was seemingly an unbreakable record of perseverance, skill, athleticism and determination - that is, until the “Iron Man.”
    On September 6, 1995, Cal Ripken, Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles played in his 2,131st consecutive game against the California Angels.
