I bought a 1980 280CE 18 years ago as a wedding gift for my wife and I. It was garage kept its entire life. It has been in my garage ever since as we only drive it on special occasions. The coolest thing about it is the gentleman I bought it from rigged a bottle of diesel fuel under the hood and ran an injector to the exhaust system with a James Bond button on the center console. I said what forever for??? He explained that when someone is tailgating him he just presses the button and it smokes so badly that they fall back. I have used it from time to time and I have to say it really works!

I've got an 85 300CD. Its a solid 9 out of 10 inside and out. It had one owner for most of its life. He then willed to his son. The son sat on it for a while and then it quickly sold, twice. So I jumped since I have lusted after this car for decades. About 170K miles, Siverblue over Blue. It's a wonderful car. Needs the AC refreshed (blows cool, not cold) and the vacuum system needs minor work. Using the key to unlock the trunk will not unlock the doors. Other than that, it's pretty sweet. Been thinking of selling it lately, but after watching this vid....nah! I do all of my own wrenching. It starts instantly in the coldest weather. Barely smokes. Its a keeper. And their values seem to be creeping up on Bring a Trailer.

The W123 230CE is my dream car, I cannot wait to be one of the proud owners of this car just like the gentlemen in the video.
The problem is I have only started my career, I’m trying to save up so that I can one day have this beauty in my garage and drive it with all my heart. Already it is so difficult to find a W123 coupe in my country..and now all the buzz will make it even more difficult to own one
By the way great video...enjoyed each second of it and so happy to see so many proud owners, hopefully I can also one day join them in the 123 club

Have a similar relationship with my Ford Granada Mk.2s2 from 81, it is a very comfy ride, reliable, a v6 that just doesn't want to quit and easy to work on with no computers. I also learned to drive in a 93' 190E, sadly my father sold it, it was a surprisingly fun sippy little car, hope to get one of those again one day, I can see them also becoming good classics.

Great point about the electronics on later cars. Starting around 1992 Mercedes went from highly engineered mechanical perfection to electronic madhouse. It's great to have windows that roll up and down with the remote control, or 49 way 19 position memory seats or 72 speaker Burmeister stereos. If they don't break. Or if they're easily repaired when they do. Unfortunately, neither is the case.
What's wrong with just simple 8 way power seat adjustments on a perfectly designed seat?

  • @williamgrissom9022

I have a 1984 & 85 300D, but don't consider them fantastic cars. I only bought the 1984 to replace the failed diesel engine in my 1985, though ended up finding another used engine. All U.S. cars 1982-85 were 5 cyl turbo-diesel w/ sunroof. The turbo adds power but likely limits engine life (mine failed at 330K miles). The 1986+ 300D had a 6 cyl diesel w/ aluminum block, which has much more power. Despite the claim of "million-mile cars", several things which can cause premature failure. A biggie is that the innards of the mechanical vacuum pump on the front of the engine can fail to slide parts into the timing chain and often destroy the engine. The aluminum camshaft towers can break. A bad fuel injector or a clogged oil squirter can burn a hole in a piston. New pistons are almost unavailable and >$500 ea if you can find one. A rebuilt engine costs $8500. Many critical parts are becoming "not avail" new or very expensive even used. The driving experience w/ the diesel engine is slow acceleration (despite the turbo-charger) and uneventful other than the independent-rear suspension does keep the rear-end noticeably stuck to the road on twisty roads. Best part is that bio-diesel can be bought at the pump in CA (no conversion needed), which makes driving one much better for climate-change than a Tesla (no net-CO2 emissions) unless you charge your battery-car from solar panels, wind, or hydro. They have been in many movies, such as Narcos (Netflix) and almost every movie about Lebanon.

I had a 280E. Pleasant car to drive but, despite careful maintenance by a Master Tech., was plagued with multiple failures...very unreliable. However the body work was very good. I was hit almost head-on by a drunk driver. His GM sedan was almost destroyed but I was able to drive home...just few blocks. For the crash protection, I promptly bought a new 260E. It arrived with factory defects and turned out to be even more unreliable than its predecessor. It left me stranded several times and a tie rod separated once! Luckily I was parking when the happened. Switched to Lexus....NO problems.

But W124 Diesel (OM 601, 602 , 603) with inline injection pump is also very reliable!!! the have now electronics. They run without the generator or battery.
This lengines can last a million mile without rebuild.
My father had the 300TD station wagon with 800.000 km on the clock after 10 years of usage . Then we had to change the timechain an injection nozzles.
Anyway this diesel engines are much more solid than any japanes, Bmw, or french diesel engines for cars.
They have two or three major things which puts them above anyother diesel cars: The inline injection pump and the double timing chain, low noise ticking in comparision to other diesels of the eara and they are multi fuel engines: They litteraly run from diesel, penut oil, Sunflower oil, With Preheating even grease is psossible!
I like all the older Mercedes model because of the built quality: /8; W123, W124, W201 they are all superb!
After The W124 the quality went down, because of the parts build in asia now and only mounted in germany....
But apart from cars i like diesel engines from Perkins: In our forklifters we have the 6.372 engine. 40 Years without rebuild. Starting even without glowing flame by 20°C under zero!!!
This is my cousin and i we used play with this engines :

man, i haven't seen a 300CD turbo listed for anything under $10k on craigslist within the last year. Of the somewhat rare times when coupes show up, they are 78-79 model year non-turbos. 300CD turbos are probably the most desirable of all the Mercedes diesels imported from the era, would love to have one.
I have also never came across a w123, c123, etc. with working AC... seems like the one thing on these cars that doesn't stand the test of time.

The W123 has electronic cruise control, it is the first thing to break, the other thing that breaks is the electronic climate control, even though it has some vacuum elements, there still is a lot of electronics in the W123.

Like the door locks, the cruise control is actually pneumatic on my W123 300TD and it still works after 38 years....... amazing 🤩

Funnily enough the fundamental reason for it being a coupè.
There are some really stupid comments here.
