This is an incredible setup! Very simple and so practical! Fold out table is genius and the ability to fold the platform into the hatch to keep the backseats!
Glad you think so! I've been using my same car camping setup for 3+ years now and it's been working perfectly for me. Nothing I'd really change other than to do more car camping.
Brilliant set up Kathleen! I'm in awe of how well the space has been thought out. The fact that you can leave your back seats in and have them deployed WITH the sleeping system folded behind is fantastic. Best of both worlds. Congrats and I hope you enjoy your new build out.
Thank you! Having plenty of storage space was essential to me, especially because I knew I wouldn't have a whole lot of head space once the platform was in. Just had to get a bit creative (thanks Dad) and be mindful of how we built the platform with all of its features. I'm usually the one who drives in my group of friends so taking out the back seats was NOT an option.Hahahahaha!
Dear Hungry Hiker. First you are and always will be a PCT thru hiker. You were formerly hiking but once earned the badge is for like. Sorta like once a marine always a marine. Thank you for your design and video. I’m contemplating either upgrading my Outback like this, buying small camper or just renting motel rooms (benefit of life long savings). Loved many aspects of your design - side cubbies, kitchen fold out, umbrella (ingenious), center leg, etc. keep us inspired
Thank you for this! I say it all the time, "thru-hiking has ruined my life." Once you thru-hike a long-distance trail, it changes you (in the best way) and you're never really the same person afterwards. I'm a proud thru-hiker and hope to do more long-distance trails in the near future! PS: My SUV camping conversion has saved me a lot of money on motel/hotel rooms and has provided me with countless warm and comfortable nights of sleep at numerous campsites. I highly recommend it!!
I like how you show every item you put into the back snd how you sneak how you keep everything stored ! Now I am psyched ! Ready for the road thanks to you!!
You a person after my own heart! I'm a PCT hiker as well, and just bought a 2022 Outback. I bought the Outback because it's long enough for me to sleep in (I'm 6'). Love your build up! Kudos to you and your dad!
Wow Token! This build out is very impressive! A shout out to your awesome dad! One of the best I’ve seen on UA-cam. Enjoy your new set up and travels! 💕🙏 🚘
You're video skills are so smoooooth. The angles, movements, lighting, editing; all very pro. Makes watching so enjoyable. Nice selection of music, too. Bravo.
I just got a ‘23 Outback, but I don’t think I can have a platform like that! I’d hit my head constantly. Maybe I’ll build one side for sleeping and one side for camping stuff. I like the lights they’re cute! Also, I signed up for a notification of when Sunshades come in for the 2023 model. I imagine they’re the same as 2022?
Congratulations and welcome to the Subi Club! I love the lights. Not only are they bright enough, but they also save me from wearing down my battery when parked at camp for the night. I have no idea what the differences will be with the sunshades for the 2022 and 2023 models. Sorry! Maybe contact Weathertech directly and ask? Good luck!
Very nice setup. I particularly find it genius that you can fold it all up and leave it in place to get full use of you back seats making storage concerns fly out the window. Also love that mesh you use on the windows for privacy AND bug deterrent. Well done.
That is the first time I have seen those window coverings. They look great. And finally someone who understands how window coverings are supposed to be used. Most think black all the time for stealth and don't realize they are absorbing the heat.
The WeatherTech window coverings are awesome!! I use them all the time and love them. They make a huge difference with regulating the temperature inside my car at night.
This is great. I've been looking around, and this seems quite doable for the average person. No one's doing this kind of thing here, but it looks so much fun to me. Will give it a go.
My car is 2016 Outback; no platform but layers of carpets and a space blanket. I’d sleep on one side above a foam mat and a big agnes air pad. The other side is for equipment and gear. No roof box therefore everything has to be in the car. I have 2 sheepskins that are about 2/3 of my body length. A carcamping youtuber put sheepskin on her camping chair and under her sleeping bag. I love the idea!
So many cool ideas here! For solo jump starting...you may want to check out the Tacklife T8 Lithium battery booster, or similar item. I've used the T8 once so far and it worked out great having it. I still keep the traditional jumper cables and AAA membership as back up though. Have fun out there!
Thanks! When getting the jumper cables, I did see the battery boosters, but I honestly didn't know enough about them to warrant the purchase. I'll do some research and go back once I've decided which one I want. That wouldn't be a bad idea to have, especially if there are no other cars around to use the jumper cables with. I'm definitely a member of AAA. They have already been helpful so far this year when I ran over a nail and got a flat tire.
I like it, well done. I have something similar to your fold out kitchen counter but mine slides out. I use my adjustable trekking poles for the legs. If you are looking to save space you could get rid of the painter poles and use trekking poles. Have your dad make the holes underneath big enough for the top of the handles to slide in and there you go.
WOW! I have been searching for a comfortable yet convenient way to live out of my small pickup truck with a topper/cap and whatever others call them. I've always wanted an Outback. But I was afraid that I would break it on the industrial and forestry roads where I live. The pickup box has similar dimension with a 39 inch headroom. P.S., that umbrella over your hatch will also work perfectly over the back of my truck! Thank you.
In addition to jumper cables I highly recommend on of those battery packs that double as a jump starter. Mine is an Imazing brand that was like $50 and has been a life saver. I charge it like once a year and it loses like 10% charge during that time. It saved my butt when my 7 year old battery died and saved the day when my aunt left her truck lights on.
hey HH you can also replace your dome lights and other interior lighting with LEDs rather than incandescent lights. The LEDs draw significantly less power meaning you are less likely to drain your battery. Just look for 3500-4500k color temp, more warm or pure white and less blue white.
Actually, I realized it wasn’t the dome lights that drained my battery. It was having my hatch open for a long period of time. The hatch on my car is electric and I found when leaving it open for hours on end without starting my car every now and then can drain the battery. I still am keeping the dome lights off.
Such a great setup with every available space put to good use. Just a thought would maybe be a really inexpensive picnic tablecloth to keep the foldout table clean from cooking odors and messes from building up on the wood surface. Beanie off to you for all the great trips you will making with this!
This is so so well thought out, you literally missed NOTHING!! Been doing some research to build mine out and I'm definitely going to follow your lead with this one
I have a sunroof on my Outback with a pod on top. When it’s raining/snowing, I crack open my sunroof for ventilation and the pod on top keeps the rain and snow out. Does that answer your question?
Awesome job!!! I’m thinking of doing the same idea but I’m thinking of covering all of my wood with a black groos point material . Not really sure yet. Have to give you an A+ on your creative ideas.
Thanks! I thought about covering the wood, but since we got such a nice piece of plywood, it didn't need it. It's smooth and there's very little chance for splinters or snags. Adding anything to the wood would have been a timely and unnecessary for my build. If you choose a cheaper, rougher piece of wood, then yes, I would definitely recommend covering it with something so it doesn't;t snag your gear or give you splinters. Good luck!
Have you thought about keeping your spare tire and jack in your roof storage? That could free up some more storage in your Outback plus easier access to your spare
Moving my spare tire to my pod wouldn’t work for me because I use my pod for storage of bigger items for my trips like SUPs and snowboards/skis. The pos is MUCH easier to get to than where I currently store my spare inside the car.
Thank you! My Dad and I really thought the layout through and checked off all of my wish list boxes. I'm super happy with how everything turned out. Better than I could have ever imagined.
I asked him about this before I released the video and he made it very clear that he wasn't interested in starting a side business creating these car camping setups. I tried!
Extra income idea!!! List it on AirBnB when you're out on an extended trip. "Cozy Car Camper just waiting for you to enjoy at trailhead" Call the fold out table a bar and you could charge even more! Just another way to make extra $$$ while hiking! C'mon Kathleen, you know me, it's bloody brilliant!
I love the way you think! It's always been a goal of mine to make money while hiking. Guess I could charge a wee bit more for all of the fancy features too!
LOVED this video!! I learned so much. I just finished my build in my 2014 Honda CRV. Now I'm fitting it with all the things I need before I hit the road. I think the sport-brella is my favorite. I'm considering this option instead of hooking an awning to my roof rack. Awesome idea!
Could you use hiking poles instead of the extension painter’s poles to cut down on items and save space? Suggest getting a jump box in case you are all alone.
You could use hiking poles, but mine didn't extend high enough to make them work the way I want them to with my table set up. The extension painter poles don't really take up a whole lot of space and I love that they're adjustable.
I do have a first aid kit actually. I just didn't show it in the video. I've featured in other videos showing my day hiking and backpacking gear. I keep my first aid kit in both my backpacking and hiking pack, which usually one or the other is in my car at all times. I don't carry mace or a gun, but one of the 10 essentials is a knife, which I always carry with me.
Very kool love the vids I subscribe to your channel.... are you ever out in California??? Check out Joshua tree google it ... that’s of people like it there among other places
I really like this especially that you are able to keep your car as a passenger vehicle. A couple questions, when you fold the wood frame up to use the back seats, where do you put your gear and you mattress? Does everything fit in the back to allow this? Also how do you freeze your ice packs?
Nice, very well thought out, I hope to bump in to you out there. I'm going from Copper Cr, to Mowich Lk. next trip, staying far below Wonderland trail. I love my backwoods trips being dropped off and picked up. 90% of my trips are just like yours, sleep at the Jeep after a day on some trail.
I normally just sit the umbrella on top of my hatch, but if it's raining, snowing or windy out, you can secure it to the car using a couple bungie cords and attach them to the rear tire rims. Works like a charm!
@@TheHungryHiker Ah yea, great idea Bungie cord to the rims. I am going to make the bed frame you did for my '16 Outback. I'll let you know when it's complete by taping my first video as well! Cheers!!
Me and my wife did this , but I like her way alot better ? That's pretty Smart . But , I won't tell my wife, Where the ideal came from ? MY WIFE WILL THINK 🤔 HE'S A GENIUS ! THANKS , I LIKE YOUR SET UP AND VIDEOS.
No because that would be something I'd need to power up and plug in, which I really want to avoid. Plus, I've found the combination of my down comforter with the fleece blanket on top with the memory foam mattress topper underneath to be plenty warm during the winter. I've slept snug as a bug in multiple snow storms with this setup in my car this year and I always have to get up and shed my fleece in the middle of the night. I end up sleeping in a tank top. It gets that warm in there!
You've seen the the SUV camping build for my DIY sleeping platform in my Subaru Outback. Now watch to see my SUV camping setup for my Subaru Outback - all ready for car camping! I’ve included a full tour along with a detailed explanation and demonstration of my sleep system, cooking system, kitchen area (my favorite part of my build), all the storage space I have throughout my SUV and all of the gear and accessories I’ll be using for car camping. I’ll also show how my DIY sleeping platform folds up into itself and sits in the back of my car whenever I want to carry passengers in the back seat.
Loved your video. Great ideas. Thank you for sharing this great build. One question, as a female... how do you handle bathroom needs day and night (both 1 and 2?) My biggest dilemma! Thanks!
@@annc5724 I don't spend long periods of travel time in my car when camping yet, but when I do, I camp at campgrounds that have facilities like a pit or flush toilet. You can also stop and gas stations or truck stops when on the road as well. As a thru-hiker. I'm pretty used to having to go to the bathroom (both 1 and 2) while out on trail, so having to do this outside without access to a pit or flush toilet is 100% normal for me.
Just discovered your channel and love the things you've done with your Subie. Where did you source the 2 telescopic table legs from? Love how that goes together. Happy Trails!
Very nice set up. I would change one thing. The 2 screws you use on the floorboard brace would be replaced with pins to drop in instead of using a screwdriver each time to assemble it. Pins with a head on them to grab hold of to remove. Other than that, Really nice!!
New subscriber. Love the video. Oh and love the. R T I C. aka Arctic those are nice. And a lot more affordable than Yeti. Have u had good luck with it?
I love your build! I'm in Washington too and just started a build on my Subaru! I'm having a lot of fun with this. Thanks for sharing what's working for you!
Nice video. We just got a Ford Escape hybrid and I'm looking to start fleshing out our car camping setup. I really love those universal window shade/bug window screens. Such a simple but useful item. Thanks for the video!
Just saw your video. Lots of take-aways from your video (especially your flip-over table and support underneath it. Thanks you. Just one question - your power seems to come from the small battery pack only (unless I missed something). While that'd work well for small loads (eg. LED lights, laptop/phone charging, etc.), do you have larger loads (eg. hair dryer, fridge, etc) you'd need to power? Do you find your battery pack sufficient for your needs?
Since I don't spend extended periods of time off the grid, I don't have a need or use for a whole lot of power yet. When I'm car camping, I don't use a fridge (I have a hard sided cooler), I don't use a hair dryer and I tend to leave my laptop at home. If and when I start spending more time off the grid, I'll look into adding a bigger power source. For now, my battery pack charges everything I need to charge while out on my short car camping adventures.
If you haven't already, you'll want to check out the video where my Dad and I do the build out for my Subaru together: ua-cam.com/video/3gA_eicpu4A/v-deo.html I list everything we used for the build, including the "legs" for the fold-out table, which you can pick up at any paint store or at any home improvement store in the paint department. Good luck!
I could either roll up the mattress topper and leave it on top of the platform in the back of the car or store it inside the house. Depends on where I'm at and what I'm doing.
One quick suggestion,, I just bought this for my upcoming trip in case I drain my car battery: on amazon search: TOPVISION 2200A, in case no one is around to jumpstart you.. it is also a nice power bank..
I love your setup it’s so cozy and functional. I just want to ask what you do when you need to use the bathroom? I’m new to all of this and want to get some ideas. Thank you and keep making your videos.☺️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I'm usually set up at a place that has a restroom, port-a-pottie or pit toilet nearby. Otherwise, I get into my backcountry poop kit and dig a cat hole away from any water sources and the trail.
Excellent organization! If it were my setup it would look like that at the beginning of the first trip, then entropy would take over... I’m not the best at putting stuff back where it goes 😋😋😋
The thru-hiker in me is so well-trained on putting things back in their places. On trail, everything has its place in my pack and gets organized the same way, each time I load and unload my pack. My car is no different. One of those lessons I learned from living in small, confined spaces. Catch me on a Resupply day though and my shit will be EVERYWHERE, but only momentarily. 😂
Great set up, but I would suggest that you put a stainless steel sheet on the cooking table section. Not only is it more sanitary but it will stop any stains, oil spills ect while cooking and easy clean up, also can be used as a chopping board.
Thanks for the suggestion. In my kitchen supplies I do have a cutting board. I’m planning on adding a tablecloth to my pull-out kitchen table for future use.

Awesome! Very utilitarian. I use the same Target Bins and RTIC cooler!
Love it!
LOVED this video!! I learned so much. I just finished my build in my 2014 Honda CRV. Now I'm fitting it with all the things I need before I hit the road. I think the sport-brella is my favorite. I'm considering this option instead of hooking an awning to my roof rack. Awesome idea!
Glad it was helpful!
Well done that’s hard core!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Excellent Build! Lots of great ideas...Happy Camping!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great work, genius! Love the video.
Thank you very much!
Kool vid !!!!!! You forgot to show a first aid kit and your mace or gun to protect your self 😘 stay safe
@@frankram2303 Very familiar with Joshua Tree. Thanks for the recommendation.
Your welcome stay safe looking forward seeing your another vids 🍻
I really like this especially that you are able to keep your car as a passenger vehicle. A couple questions, when you fold the wood frame up to use the back seats, where do you put your gear and you mattress? Does everything fit in the back to allow this? Also how do you freeze your ice packs?
The mattress would have to get left somewhere. And I think it was pretty clear she didn't have a freezer.
R dads handy to have or what !!!!! Congrats on the Subby !!! Just what a grl may need in thr pnw 😆
Thanks!
Fantastic use of space.
Love it!!!
You and your dad rock!! Many thanks for the ideas. One thing how is the umbrella fastened to the car for stability?
I normally just sit the umbrella on top of my hatch, but if it's raining, snowing or windy out, you can secure it to the car using a couple bungie cords and attach them to the rear tire rims. Works like a charm!
@@TheHungryHiker Ah yea, great idea Bungie cord to the rims. I am going to make the bed frame you did for my '16 Outback. I'll let you know when it's complete by taping my first video as well! Cheers!!
Great setup! I got some good ideas from this video for my build. Safe travels!
Awesome! Thank you!
Very cool, I love the table set up, haven't seen anyone using the adjustable leg set up anywhere,
Me and my wife did this , but I like her way alot better ? That's pretty Smart . But , I won't tell my wife, Where the ideal came from ? MY WIFE WILL THINK 🤔 HE'S A GENIUS ! THANKS , I LIKE YOUR SET UP AND VIDEOS.
Sweet!! 😀
have you thought about using an electric blanket on cold nights?
@@TheHungryHiker Thanks for the reply. Happy trails!
Very informative, I appreciate the ideas! I posted my first SUV camping made simple at @ ... thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Unique ideas. Nice setup.
Thank you!
Love your setup, love your organization!
Glad you like it!
Very creative and efficient system, well done!
Thank you very much!
No quiero ni pensar cuando se le pinche un neumático 😬. Saludos y felicitaciones por tu auto.
Nadie quiere un pinchazo, pero mi repuesto está en la parte de atrás, por si acaso. También tengo AAA.
Great build! I did something similar to my 2015 Subaru forester, cheers from Bellingham!
Very cool! Thank you!
Just discovered your channel and love the things you've done with your Subie. Where did you source the 2 telescopic table legs from? Love how that goes together. Happy Trails!
Amazing setup! Can’t wait to get a Subbie!
Thank you! 😀
Very nice set up. I would change one thing. The 2 screws you use on the floorboard brace would be replaced with pins to drop in instead of using a screwdriver each time to assemble it. Pins with a head on them to grab hold of to remove. Other than that, Really nice!!
I've actually had zero issues with using the screws so I wouldn't change a thing about my setup. Its been working perfectly for me!
Love this! Thanks for sharing❤
Glad you liked it! 😊
@@TheHungryHiker I’m 60 years old. I just bought a 2013 Subaru outback not sure I can maneuver around inside it but I’m going to try!😂
New subscriber. Love the video. Oh and love the. R T I C. aka Arctic those are nice. And a lot more affordable than Yeti. Have u had good luck with it?
Oh and please where did u get the legs for the table ? Thanks
Do you keep the food in your car at night when you're in bear country?
I don't car camp in bear country. As for food storage, I keep my food stored in the bins below my sleeping platforms for each of my trips.
Nice build , best wishes
Awesome rig!
Thank you!
I’m getting the sport umbrella I have been looking at awning options for car camping and the set up for them bugs me. Love your set up.
Awesome!
I love your build! I'm in Washington too and just started a build on my Subaru! I'm having a lot of fun with this. Thanks for sharing what's working for you!
Yay!! I love this!!
Nice video. We just got a Ford Escape hybrid and I'm looking to start fleshing out our car camping setup. I really love those universal window shade/bug window screens. Such a simple but useful item. Thanks for the video!
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Sorry for the late comment/ question. Just found your channel. Is 2 inch mattress enough. Would you go bigger if you did it over? Thanks
Who makes the table legs? Where can I find them?
If you haven't already, you'll want to check out the video where my Dad and I do the build out for my Subaru together: ua-cam.com/video/3gA_eicpu4A/v-deo.html
I list everything we used for the build, including the "legs" for the fold-out table, which you can pick up at any paint store or at any home improvement store in the paint department. Good luck!
Where do you store the mattress when the camp set up is folded up?
I could either roll up the mattress topper and leave it on top of the platform in the back of the car or store it inside the house. Depends on where I'm at and what I'm doing.
One quick suggestion,, I just bought this for my upcoming trip in case I drain my car battery:
on amazon search: TOPVISION 2200A, in case no one is around to jumpstart you.. it is also a nice power bank..
Thanks for the suggestion!
this looks so cozy! I'm turning my scion xb into a micro camper, so excited..
Awesome!! Have fun!
This is an awesome setup! Well presented , too!
Glad you like it!
Just gave me new ideas for my Sportage!
Awesome! Happy Car Camping!
Excellent video. Very practical well thought out. Thanks!
Thank you!
