- NGR Start: SN899719
NGR Finish: SN823682
Byway Number: ?
Date: 27.07.19
Condition: Dirt track/trail, stone track and bog.
Notes: This video features the eastern (byway) end of the ancient and fearsome 'Monk's Trod' in Powys, and a small section of the western (unclassified road) end in Ceredigion.
The Powys part is subject to a TRO preventing use by four-wheeled vehicles and motorcycles. The Ceredigion side has a TRO preventing use by four-wheeled motor vehicles.
Use was by permit issued by Powys County Council on one of two prescribed days where motorcycle impact was observed at a number of staked and taped sections along the byway.
I turned back at the far side of the first bog in Ceredigion and was told by other riders that there is a larger bog on the other side of the hill.

Haven't done it for 12 years or so. Great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Fascinating watching how you do this. I've got a CRF250L and I fall off ALL the time in this type of narrow rut terrain. So definitely accomplished riding (from my amateur perspective!!)
Practice! Lower tyre pressures and learning clutch control help.
Where about is this
The location is in the video description.
I thought this was closed or atleast that there was an unofficial voluntary tro. Heard so many stories of it being so boggy on top that people have nearly had to leave their bikes after getting stuck, that I’ve never ridden this one despite being local. I’ve always thought it was just KMs of bogs but from the video clearly not.
It's open by permit. The bogs are hard work, and thankfully are only found near the river.
@@WiltshireByways thanks mate. As you’ll know its back open as of a few days ago, and I am tempted to take my crf 250 L up it starting at the eastern end and riding until it starts to get even slightly tricky, and then turning around. I’ve already heard stories of lads who rode it a few days ago when it re-opened and the consensus is that it’s still very hard, but even if the first km or so is easy going then it’s worth riding just that as an out and back route. What do you reckon?
That's a sensible idea - much of Powys end was sustainable when I visited, though there are boggy areas that need to be taken with care or avoided. The Ceredigian end is where the really bad bogs are - you're braver than me if you continue much beyond the river.
Never heard of this one 👍
