  • In this short video I capture video from the OTA of a StarQuest 102MC Maksutov telescope, looking at Mars on the night of closest approach in its 2020 opposition. The idea is to further test the quality of the OTA, which is bundled as a package with a lightweight alt-az/equatorial mount.

    Excellent raw footage for the sized scope

    Beautiful image, especially for such a small scope. I just got my Mars image last night with my C8.

    This is really encouraging! I should be getting a camera next week and I'm anxious to see if I can get Mars too.

      I know what you mean. I live in The Netherlands, we're expecting clear skies sometime in 2030 🔭😆.

    Nice capture. What causes the flickering? Is it atmospheric conditions? Does Mars always look like that from Earth or are there better days, atmosphere-like?

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  4 роки тому +1

      blutey Thanks. The wobbling is due to the atmosphere. It improves as the planet gets higher, but the stability also varies minute to minute. It will always exhibit some amount of wobble/flicker, but yes this can vary from night to night. Sometimes you set up and you think it’s going to be great, but then the image is a mush. The challenge of astro! Clear and steady nights to you.

      @@JenhamsAstro Thanks. I tried capturing Mars last night on a Panasonic FZ82 but the results were unusable. Far worse than the more distant Jupiter with the same camera where it was able to also capture 4 of its moons.
      May give Mars another go tonight.

    Nice! I just bought a Mak like that to look at Mars but have been suffering from lots of clouds since it arrived.

      That usually happens after getting new kit! Hopefully you will get clear skies soon.

    Great image and your channel is refreshing and accessible, bought a skymax90 after watching and love it, old newt too big/heavy so not used. Saw Mars last night excellent but too bright! Any advice on eye piece upgrades? Having trouble finding stuff but Orion nebula was amazing - Thank you.

      Thanks. I suppose budget is the starting point as most EPs are OK with a Mak. An affordable range are the BST Starguiders, moving up in price there are Celestron X- CEL LXs, and Explore Scientific offer 62 and 68 degree ranges. As you may have seen I swapped out the optical finder for an RDF, and this combined with a 26mm EP is my starting point for target location, before going to higher powers. I can never find anything with my Maks unless I follow this approach and the RDF is well aligned with the scope and screwed down! Probably a big difference from your Newt.

    Hey Graham, thanks for the nice Video!
    A question: What kind of barlow did you use? And did you also use a filter?
    Best regards

      K. Hi, I used a Televue 2x barlow, a ZWO ADC but no filter.

    I have a Sky-Watcher Skymax 127 AZ5 telescope, and as I am new to this area, I could use some help. I've tried looking at the Moon and it was quite easy to manage a clear picture of it but when I am observing Mars during these days, I can't get a clear shot. What is the best way of operating the telescope when looking at objects further away than the Moon? And also, how could i connect this telescope to my laptop for reframing the picture?

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  4 роки тому

      Visually you will need a barlow lens to make the planets larger in the eyepiece. If the planet is low in the sky then the view will wobble - occasionally in sharp focus but often not. This is normal. Filters are another useful tool to improve the visual view. To connect to your laptop you need to replace the eyepiece with a camera of some sort that can supply video to your laptop. This can be a cheap webcam, an astro camera like the ASI 120MC i use, or a DSLR which supports "Liveview".

    which is better 7-21 or 8-24 in zoom eyepieces ?!

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  4 роки тому

      I don't use zoom EPs but the 8-24 seems to be most popular of those. I'd suggest you read the online forums for opinions on specific EPs.
