- Baby Chimp Jeff is adored by the chimpanzees at Chester Zoo
They all want to look after him and play with him - especially the young chimps - 5 year old Stevie (his sister) 3 year old Toyah (his Aunt) and unrelated 4 year old Annie
In this video his big sister Stevie wants some time alone with him. Big sister Stevie has had a close bond with the baby chimp since he was born in December 2022 and has had a big role in helping mum ZeeZee to care for him. She is often seen cuddling him, playing with him and as in this video taking him off on an adventure, carrying him like mum on her back!
There are so many wonderful moments in this video - look out for the scene when Stevie tries to get Jeff up onto her back and the scene when they both look at each other with so much sibling love - and baby Jeff was interested in what Stevie was eating!!
Another heartwarming moment in the video is when Jeff sees mum ZeeZee and runs back to her!
baby chimp Jeff - the youngest chimp in the group at nearly 10 months old, is now growing up fast but is still adorable, tiny and cute!
Baby Jeff is now exploring his environment and spends a little more time away from mum ZeeZee, but under the watchful eye of the group.
There is always a chimp looking out for him! and he regularly runs back to his mother ZeeZee - if he doesn't get grabbed by one of the other chimps first! (mainly by adults Sally and Pattie or the younger chimps Stevie and Annie)
In this video we see Sally, an unrelated female who has had a close relationship with the baby since birth, go get Jeff and bring him back to be near his mum ZeeZee 2 times after Annie runs off with him!
at the end of the video - and the third time Annie takes him, Jeff returns to his mum on his own, its adorable to watch him running back to her!
ZeeZee is a laid back experienced mother chimp who has had previous offspring and as she gets so much help with her baby from the other chimps, she was happy to let Annie play with Jeff and have some responsibility with looking after him and in doing so she is helping Annie and the other younger chimps gain the essential experience of rearing young themselves. This chimpanzee group have a strong family relationship which is wonderful as it helps to give other chimps who have yet to have babies and teach the young chimps much needed skill to raise families of their own
Baby Jeff is such a little cutie, and he is growing in strength and confidence by the day, Stevie is certainly helping him with this.
The whole chimpanzee troop have a role in watching out for the little baby chimp and some Adult female chimps play a bigger role in helping mum ZeeZee raise him, especially Pattie and Sally who are often seen with Jeff and taking him back when the younger chimps Stevie and Annie run off with him or are playing a little too rough with him

There are currently as of 2023, 20 chimps in 2 seperate chimp groups at Chester Zoo consisting of 7 Males and 13 Females The oldest is Boris at 56 years old Born 1966 and the youngest is Jeff who was Born in December 2022
Most of the chimps at Chester Zoo, have appeared in the popular nature documentary series, shown on TV called The Secret Life Of The Zoo.
This animal documentary series was first aired on TV in 2016 and has run for 10 seasons from 2016 - 2021

The keepers must have to really trust the chimps to be careful near the water. If Jeff fell in I don’t think the keepers would be able to go in and rescue him, so the chimps really have to trust and depend on each other like a real wild troop.
There is a lot of trust within this group for sure. They have so many experienced chimps in the troop. Maybe a little over confidence though in some of the younger ones. 🥰
The keepers wouldn't go in there for any amount of money if the troop was riled up for any reason. One said as much and that they would "come out in pieces".
Chimps can swim, there are no predators in the water, and this IS a real troop. Maybe not formed under typical circumstances, but their bonds are solid.
Chimps typically don't know how to swim. They have to be taught by humans. This was an incredible video, and the strong family bonds really show.

To: @andrewhassell8045 - According to a blog from someone who is doing their dissertation on these chimpanzees, then Carlos and Dylan are already related. By blood. Carlos is the son of Dylan!
Yes, this is a closely related group, as Peter says, it is possible that Dylan is Carlos's father however Carlos is the only chimp who in the stud book who is listed as father unknown. The possible fathers are Boris, Wilson, Friday and Dylan. Carlos was born in 2005 around the time when Dylan was taking over dominance.
To: @ApeTracker1 - For some reason I do not find that very re-assuring. Not long ago a zoo announced that a gorilla, named Sully, had given birth. Nothing unusual in that except that it came as a complete surprise to them since they had assumed, up until then that the 'mother' was a male.
In this age of DNA sampling it appears that this would be a requirement when decisions about 'conservation' are made.
Aside from the consequences of accidental in-breeding there is the 'moral imperative' to maintain an unblemished gene-pool of the different species. An aspect that becomes difficult to maintain if, unknowingly, 'hybridization' has been introduced.

Maybe Stevie is plotting ways to get rid of her peskey lil brother, Jeff 😅
