    • @Etienne.6329

Very likely. The only way the "magnetic suction" rumours can be true is that the new controllers will be lodged in some casing (thus allowing the S2 to have a proper grip)
Therefore absolutely no room for rails

There's a third party one that's licensed by Nintendo. I have it, but it's kind of pointless. You can't use the joycons while they're charging, so if you specifically want to use joycons and not a pro controller, you still need a backup pair.
And at that point, it's really no different from hooking them up to the Switch and charging them through the dock, except you don't need a separately sold accessory for that.

One of the earliest Switch 2 rumors was that it has an 8 inch screen. Assuming that's true and they want to keep the aspect ratio the same (which they most likely would), then the sides/rails have to be taller and thus unlikely to be backwards compatible with the old joycons.
Wirelessly I'm sure they'll connect and work just fine but you'd need a dedicated way of charging them, thus this product is born.
    (theory)

This accessory has no grips or bottom that could prevent controllers from being charged on it meaning it should charge all switch accessories with rails, theoretically

  • @sdbegotist
    @sdbegotist Місяць тому

So I have thoughts on why this would be released now outside of the reasonable assumption of a system rail change, as well as the design changes for this as a product:
    - Mechanically, this is identical to the near launch comfort grip (the charging controller grip), including position of the USB C port.
    - Unlike the launch grip, the lack of grips is there to allow for support of the NES controllers
    - The two charging docks released at launch were from Power A, and while the 4-port version is still sold (though lacks clearance for NES controllers), the Pro Controller + 2 Joycon version was discontinued a few years ago, with a spiritual remake that also lacks NES controller support.
    - Releasing alongside NES World Championship, as well as the above comments, gives a good reason for releasing now.
    - Lastly, the reason why the USB being on the top; you can still use the grip as a controller with the Joycon configuration, and still be able to charge up.
Hopefully this is understood, from a non-tech engineer perspective.

There are multiple theories I got, and some of them might be mutually exclusive. But the main ones:
1 - Switch 2 will take longer than anticipated to come out (e.g. early 2026) and Nintendo is already aware of that and uses this as a way to stall
2 - Switch 2 is pulling a WiiU with the controls where the two generations use the same controllers (WiiMote and JoyCon for WiiU and Switch 2) but maybe without the WiiU Pad equivalent
3 - Someone really just forgot that this is something they should have released years ago (Switch Lite may or may not have been one reason for that given it doesn't use external JoyCons by default)
4 - Someone realized 'we don't have that' and as some companies have the 'just do SOMETHING'-mentality, that guy just decided 'something' is creating this just so he can say he did something

The cable out the top is because they're using the same board as the charge grip, so they didn't have to make new models or anything except the stand and the back plate, that's also why it stands proud so they could reuse the face plate

I remember the charge station for everything from the console to the joycons and you could even put your cartridges there to have them neatly organized.
That is weird that this peripheral is being announced when barely we are closer to the announcement of the new console, instead of seeing it the first day of the Switch? Yeah, makes me think that either Nintendo's partnership with third parties expired or they simply want to provide the stuff without depending of these third parties ever again. Maybe the Switch 2 will have joycons but different, a new design and better tech inside that will not allow for more DRIFTING. (THE DRIFTING)
    We can only speculate anyway.

The fact they never released an official charge stand for the Switch early on, and that they announced the Switch's successor is on its way, makes me think it's gonna be compatible with the Switch 2.
It'd be extremely weird if this is purely for Switch 1 with it being so extremely late.

Hi! You probably won’t see this comment but it might be because Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition released with NES controller joycons, shown charging in the photos, which can’t be used in handheld, so I guess they thought charging them would be inconvenient.

The weird placement of the USB cable on the top might be because they just reused the charging grip. It even has the charging LED in the same place. When the charging module is removed from the stand, it looks exactly like it, minus the grips in the back.
(Which is so weird, since these are apparently a similar price, but I assume you can‘t play games with this one...)

Many say that the Next Switch will have magnetic Joy-Con, and the current Joy-Con will be incompatible without an adapter outside of Bluetooth. Not to mention many charging solutions don't accommodate for the NES Joy-Con. As for the timing; the Next Switch likely won't release until about a year after this accessory releases. I expect the Next Switch to be unveiled at CES in January 2025, and the release to be in October 2025.

  • @AuroraButterflyx

Sounds to me that they were going to release on day one, but maybe something stopped production, not able to get enough stock etc. They then forgot about it until now when they realised that the joy-cons will most likely not work on hand-held for switch 2, as it might not fit correctly if switch 2 is bigger. So they thought, well perfect time to release this product so people can use the "old" joycons on the new switch.

  • @sa64ds

My running theory is that the next console WILL support Switch Joy-Cons, but won’t have a method to charge them on the system itself. That’s the only reason I think Nintendo would release something like the charging stand this late into the Switch’s lifecycle, to give to-be next console owners a way to charge their Joy-Cons assuming they sell their old Switch.

I remember being confused about this in 2017. I plugged in my switch into the dock, hooked the joycons up to that weird controller thing, played Breath of the Wild for a while, and then it tells me that my Joycons are low in battery. And I'm like yeah okay how do I charge them? And I decided I had to stop playing on my TV and try handheld, so that I could plug in my switch to plug in my joycons to my switch. And that was basically the last time I put my switch in the dock. That little inconvenience, that you can't charge the Joycons while you're playing a video game, made it so I never tried again.

I think it will mean that the new Switch 2 can wirelessly connect to the old joycons, but that the console itself wont have the same rails or something meaning you need a separate charger as opposed to just... keeping your old Switch around to use as an over glorified controller charger.

I'm probably one of the very few people who've been annoyed by not having a first party option for this product. But you're right... 7 years in I've already got a third party one that works just fine, *without* a cord coming out the top. I mean I get it, it's also a solution to mid-docked-gaming joycon charging. But I'm sure there could've been a secondary charging port on the charger dock itself, so you can ditch the top cord on the shelf. That would've made it at least a "neat" upgrade from the 3rd party options.

i could def see it being something made primarily with switch 2 in mind, what with the stuff you say about forwards compatibility and the whole magnetic joycon rumor. maybe it's strategically a bit of an odd move but i figure for an accessory like this, it's almost like, might as well just release it right now. it would only sell to people who had the original switch anyway, and i figure it's not like it would've gotten a major spotlight at switch 2's launch anyway, so it may as well be released now to an audience of 140+ million switch owners and then given a short highlight to remind people of its benefits for the switch 2, rather than being aimed solely at a much smaller launch install base for switch 2, especially when some of those buyers (can't imagine a *lot* mind you, but certainly some) won't have had the original switch or joycons from it.

This makes it LESS likely that Switch 2 will use the same rail system IMHO. Currently your joy-con are charged when on the Switch unit itself. The next Switch is rumored to be compatible with current-gen joy-con, but maybe they work but don't physically connect, and this is intended to allow you to keep your controllers charged without keeping your old Switch plugged in

I feel like this is actually a situation of the new nintendo console will use old joycons, but won't mainly use old joycons. It might be a situation of having new joycons for the consoles, but making it available to use old joycons on the new console, because I thought the joycon chargers were unnecessary I mean... How often do people play a game for more than 20 hours, even at that if your battery does run out that is a sign to take a break and let them charge on the dock, and if you really can't wait 3 hours... you can play the switch in portable mode while the joycons charge. It was really unnecessary to have a joycon charging stand. However now it might be necessary with the new nintendo console.

  • @jordanfish

Switch 2 won’t support joycons sliding onto it at all. Switch 2’s controller will be one piece with a screen on it. The part that docks to the TV will also have a screen on it, and the two parts will combine to form a dual screen portable, split apart to form a highly advanced successor to both Wii U and Switch. Nintendo filed a patent for exactly this. So, Joycons will still be supported as wireless peripherals but they won’t slide on.

    Exact opposite.
The rumours for a long time has been that the Switch 2 will have different. incompatible joycon rails.
If you cannot connect your old joycons to the Switch 2, you can't charge them.
But you could still use them for wireless, even if not connected.
So the solution is you need a joycon charger other than the console.

$30 is lame though I dunno if I'll bother. I'm not going to buy the next Nintendo console so I'm sorta on my way out this year. I do plan on buying some Nintendo games that are coming out though, along with Metroid Prime 4.
