Being called "Dude" by someone with a polite British accent is a close second.
she actually saved him
Yeah, actually she kinda saved him. Comedians always have answers for those kinds of questions and prepared for heckling. With that, he'll be able to get some easy laughs.

Cool of Jerry to share an embarrassing moment like that at the end.
A true artist wants to give the audience their best and isn't afraid to show their worst. It makes their best so much better.
Jerry constantly flips from relatable guy to massive douche. No in between.
@@wormwearer9434 yeah lmao
You think Jerry posted this?
@@chychywoohooYou didn't know that Jerry runs his own UA-cam channel called Channel JERRY?
"Is this your first gig?" line from an audience member was actually pretty funny.
I've done stand-up a few times, I've ranged from really bad to okay. Seeing Jerry Seinfeld struggle like that in 2002 after he had been a comic for at least 25 years and all his success made me feel waaaaaaay better about myself.
I watch these after I bomb too feel better too.
FOUR YEARS after the final episode of his show, one of the most popular sitcoms of ALL TIME, aired.
As a preacher who memorizes sermon material for every Sunday, I am surprised he would get in front of an audience, apparently go on a tangent, and not know the material well enough to get it out. Bombing in delivery is fine. Not really having the material ready is surprising.
I think Kramer bombed the worst..
Yeeaah if you have to sit down with the NAACP after your set...it probably didn't go well.
That wasn't a bomb. That was nuclear self-destruction!
It was just a bad set
@@tombombadill6159 for all the wrong reasons
Kramer didnt bomb, he dropped bombs.
Eddies story is great. "Oh, you a comedian huh?"
The whole story was hilarious, especially his dad having to come get him at 2 AM.
Watching Jerry "forget where he was going" made him SO HUMAN and relatable. I do that all the time.
I can't tell the difference between the unfunniness of Jerry forgetting his bits, and the unfunniness in him remembering them...
@@DunmoresMovieMania sounds like you need to work on your sense of humor
Amazing, we actually get to witness the moment that inspired Jerry Seinfeld to never change his act 👏🏻
oh man.... "is this your first gig?"
damn jerry. ouch
But then like any legendary comic responding to a naive audience member, he perfectly sells a sarcastic "yes."
That was a tough one. Had something like that happen playing piano in a jazz club once.
Someone asked Rodney Dangerfield "What do you do for a living?" He didn't bomb though, just liked to interact with the audience.
@@Charlezard. She wasn't naive. She was well-aware of who he was, and broke the tension with an excellent heckle. She played a good role and saved him.
@@trevscribbles amen man, she gave him a way out of the bit, got a laugh to boot. If you have to have hecklers let them all be like her.

Norm 😭❤️
It's amazing to see him like that. That Eddie Murphy story starts a bit slow, but my God is the ending good. Almost peed my pants laughing. Raw is still one of my favorites all these years later..
I agree a million percent. I swear. Yeah, the story about bombing at Gerald's is good and it ends great. Eddie Murphy is always composed to tell quality stories. And, the material in RAW was not only raw, it was GENUINE & INSIGHTFUL. I was SO awestruck when I first saw it that I told about 50 people for days and days. I still occasionally watch it.
Yeah. ABSOLUTELY. I JUST LOVE TO SEE BOTH OF THEM LAUGH. BIG TIME. JERRY SMILE TOO. AND EDDIES STORIES.
Funny thing is Eddie Murphy has two laughs...the "huh huh huh chuckle" and the "huh-HUH! gasping for air vacuum cleaner laugh".
I was a standup for 7 years and did a gig in the Bronx in a room literally under the highway overpass. A rapper with a boombox on his shoulder went before me. I was the only white guy in the place and about half way through my set, it became Midnight at the Apollo as the room erupted into an arm-waving chant, “You done! You done. You done!” The club owner, fearing for my safety, slipped me out the back door and escorted me to the barbwire fenced parking lot. He handed me a wad of cash and said, “Get out of here.” It was the most money I ever made for a set.
Great stroy!
@David McDonald here's a guy who has never been to a comedy gig.
Lol
sounds more like the best bomb story.
and now what job do you do? i wanted to do stand up but the odds of making a decent living are tough. and no health insurance. and no paid vacations.
Wow - to see Jerry Seinfeld - the quintessential American comedian - bombing in front of an audience in 2002 - not even close to the beginning of his career!! He's
"Seinfeld" from the TV show by this point. It makes me realize just how difficult it really is to get up in front of a live audience and do stand up.
He is very unfunny

It’s true. I’ve done a few open mics in my life and thoroughly hated it. It’s soooooo hard to be funny when it’s just you and a microphone

Kudos to Jerry for showing a video of him bombing. Humbling
“This your first gig?” lol...Jerry totally should’ve just laughed at that.
He was probably using that line to buy time to think lol
"Younger Seinfeld"
He was like in his 40s then. Lol
Didn’t say young, but younger. He’s now 65, so 40s is younger.
Yeah he's almost 67. Same age as my mom. So yeah almost 20yrs ago
Here for Norm
This is what's so great about standup - the most experienced comedian in the world sometimes delivers their best bit and it bombs, and sometimes they can f up their own material and the energy of the audience keeps the show entertaining.
I guess all live entertainment with an audience is like this
Goddamn Norm is national treasure.

Much props for actually showing a clip of bombing. Typical Jerry though, still makes it funny.
I had an experience very similar to John Oliver's. I work in a science museum, and I sometimes do 15 presentations for audiences about a certain topic. I was doing a presentation about Newton's 3 laws of motion, and had just finished the 2nd law when the entire audience just gets up and leaves. I said, "Oh, you're leaving?" Turns out it was a field trip group and it was their scheduled lunch time.
"Oh, okay. Have a good day."
So I just...stood there, watching them all leave, holding a prop. Then it was just...silence, staring at an empty set of seats.
A few minutes later, a couple visiting the museum peeked into the area and I invited them down. I ended up doing the whole presentation again just for them.
Sounds like the energy of the peeking couple was equivalent to the mass of the group that left, thus being able to demonstrate all three laws.
If i was that couple, i would likely want to leave so bad, but i would stay out of courtesey for ur mental health lol
Legit, that story John told at the start is the funniest thing I've heard him say.

Pure Pro. The smirk, the delivery, it was almost part of the bit if you didn't know it was him bombing on stage.

Comedians are the only people who enjoy talking about their worst failures. Then they make that story funny!

I get the feeling that if no one had said anything during Jerry’s set when he’d completely lost all sense of where he was or where he was going that it would have been worse than the eventual ‘is this your first gig line’
The silence was killing far more than the eventual interjection.
The worst thing for any standup comic has to be absolute silence.
My wife and I went to see Jerry at the Beacon theatre this summer. Jerry was so well polished and current with his jokes. Seeing Jerry was on my bucket list. To this day the sitcom Seinfeld is the best show ever. Jerry keep bringing smiles to all your fans. 🤣
Watch Curb as well, it was my comedy life support after Seinfeld. After Curb all I can say is thank goodness Netflix does comedy specials.
@@icleave the only thing I feel comes close to Seinfeld and Curb is "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", if you haven't watched it, give it a try. It's normally described as Seinfeld on crack and that sound kinda accurate 😂
4:53 I wanted to yell out, "It's okay Jerry, you'll make it big one day!"
I guess the lesson here is that success isn't about getting all the lucky breaks. It's about having the courage to fail as embarrassingly as possible and keep going.
Truth. Maybe both
That footage of Seinfeld at the end was great! Thank you.
Im not suprised everyone left that british guy
Aww, honey! That's the guy that flames your president. You know him!
BTW, we love hearing about legends bomb because it gives us hope that we could be a comedian too.
The last bit, when Jerry forgot the joke... so comforting. I had never performed publicly, and entered a competition. I was doing okay but after the set up, I forgot my punchline. I was seconds from walking off the stage and randomly asked “has anyone seen my punch line… It was here just a minute ago.” It was the biggest laugh of my set. It’s really good knowing that the legends experience the same thing. BTW… I no longer do stand up but I do corporate trainings and motivational speaking.
Good recovery! There are a few comics who messed up but then used it....
"Is this your first gig?"
"Yes. Yes it is."

"Is this your first gig?" Classic!
This is how I feel when I teach my kids at school. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. But it's always fun.

@Matt Hill He's worth $30M and got there through comedy, I think it's started.
That Porsche might just be the most uncomfortable, weird looking vehicle ever.
Watching his bomb at the end, made me want to watch "Seinfeld" now
Wow seeing Jerry bomb in 2002 is amazing. As a former semi pro (at best) stand up comedian myself I find that clip both encouraging and terrifying.
I do stand up and to be fair that lady gave Jerry a lot of time before she heckled. That segment was actually not dying horribly in that he was doing his best to maintain a lightness but he waited around 5 seconds too long in that particular moment and the audience took the joke from him.
I am terrible. I was thinking, "He's alive!? Oh wait, no, that's not Bernie Mac"
RIP.
OMG me too!
Me too!!
You know it's bad when the hecklers are funnier than the guy on stage! LOL
Meh. Anybody can make a funny retort when the other person is fucking up onstage. Let's see how funny they are when they're the ones on stage

I stay up near Edinburgh and have saw some *tragic* comedy rooms at the Festival. It is exactly like John Oliver described it, these tiny basement rooms with 4-5 people in them (including the comedian), and every joke is a flatline. The ones who are trying to get better always ask for feedback. A guy who did an hour and a half standup to 5 (down from 10 so half of the audienced bailed before the end) of us about living on a boat in this tiny room asked us, "What was the weakest part of it?" And I swear to christ this is the only time this woman laughed the entire time she was there, shook her head and took her coat and walked out of the room.
I always wanted to walk out on John Oliver.
@Herb Tenderson nothing says circle jerk like awards. Plenty of overrated people walking around with awards. Plenty of way more talented people not.
That's the EXACT term I've always used to describe ANY awards show. I didn't even go to my own high school football awards banquets.
How is John Oliver still a thing?
@@jjryan1352 Have you seen his show? Not many people do such in-depth research and deep dives into topics anymore.
@@Stardust_Lily lmao imagine genuinely believing this. It's a lowest common denominator clapter show that rehashes mainstream opinions and shit jokes on a given subject for about 10 minutes. Jerry S. acting a little like J. Fallon.
Indeed. All those phony doubling over laughs at mildly amusing comments from the comedians.
Watch Norm McDonalds Kojak story and come back saying if his doubling up in laughter is phoney
Fake laugh
I thought it was fake for a while but now I think it's real. Jerry very seldom laughs at other people when he is the guest on other people's shows. I think he thinks he's better than everyone, like Cosby did. But when he's with someone who's been though the same hard road as him, he laughs a lot because he feels like he's talking to a peer or an equal. All comedians suffer. When Jerry laughs, it's always something that another comedian says, or a funny story about the business side of comedy. That's my clumsy way of saying that Jerry loves other comedians genuinely but hates everyone else.

But Cosby IS better than everyone! Especially in terms of rape..
Comedians are the real heroes.
