  • In this video, I explain some considerations for collaborating with other producers when you use the CTZ approach for loudness and gainstaging. This is episode 12 in a series about how to mix for loudness, in large part by using a specific approach to gainstaging and dynamic range control that I call the "Clip-to-Zero (CTZ) strategy".
Find all of the "Mixing LOUD with CTZ" episodes in one convenient playlist:

This is NOT paid promotion. All the tools you'll see me using or hear me mention were paid for by myself. These are just great tools that I use every day, and that I personally endorse.

Loving this tutorial series! You should definitely reach out to Kazrog, Newfangled Audio and the rest of the plugin devs you've recommended. I've just been on a buying spree and would have loved it if I knew you were getting a kickback from it!
As a side note, I know you have a lot of videos in the pipeline already but something I'd love to see is what are your most used mixing and utility plugins for different tasks outside of the CTZ tools e.g. What's the first plugin you reach for if you want a simple HPF? If you want to fatten something up? If you want it wider? If you just want to fuck shit up and make it sound completely different?

Short answers: Fabfilter Pro-Q3 is still the king of all-around EQs, so that's what I use for HPFs (especially if it's down in the low end and might need to be a linear phase filter). To "fatten something up" could mean a few things, but for that I reach for Spectre first, and then maybe either Oxford Inflator or P42 Climax for broadband saturation. For wideness I tend to reach for StageOne by LeapWing Audio. For fucking stuff up and making mudpies, Infiltrator (by Devious Machines) is the current king and Rift (by Minimal Audio) is the queen. Also good is Portal and Thermal (by Output). Also Looperator (by SugarBytes).

@@Baphometrix Awesome, thanks for the reply! We seem to have similar taste, big fan of FF plugins, Spectre and Sonnox Inflator. Lots of good stuff to look into, thanks for the tips! StageOne looks really interesting. Not really used the mudpie technique before but watched your vid and it looks like a great way to get ideas flowing.
Also loved your vid on how you use Scaler 2 to come up with spicy progressions. Have you tried either of the Captain Plugins or the Hexacord Orb plugins? They look like cool tools for when you're stuck for inspiration but neither offer trials which is a big turn off for me.

I just love how you have taken your time to teach us, even people I have paid in the bast never took the time to explain things so well. Thanks and GOD bless you!

Asynchronous collaboration is really difficult as you described it. If possible I prefer to collab synchronous . Means two people working the same time with screen sharing and Sonobus. One person is doing the work while both looking on the screen. Other attempts I tried sadly failed till yet. Hope this chances in future and your point is very important, because I didn't think in the "beginning" about the "end" :) Thanks 🌻

This is a timely and very useful video. Niico and I are gonna collab on a hip hop track and I will be sending him stems once I finish rewatching this video. Thanks as always for this series. You're turning producers into straight savages!

Hey Baphometrix, I've noticed you've taken out some lessons which you planned to do in early lessons. Probably because you've covered most of it in other lessons already. But I am still feeling I am missing some knowledge. I was looking forward to "leveling each new sound into your mix framework".
Some questions I have about this are: do you turn up new melodic sounds to 0 and then turn them down? When or do you clip these sounds? What if your OG snare hits outside the 4x4 beat? Do you turn it down or sidechain the rest to it? Should I turn my hi hats down if they are clipping together with my bass?
These might be beginner questions which don't have to be related to the CTZ method. But I was looking forward to seeing you tackle those problems.
