OMGOSH - FINALLY someone explains exactly WHERE the shadow goes in a systematic way, I wish I could give you 10 likes ;) Color theory I get, it is very scientific and direct, but light and shadow is so wishy-washy, and having someone explain WHERE you put down shadow and WHY you put it there is what I have been searching for everywhere. Light is SO hard but you really helped me make a huge stride tonight! Thank you!
Hello Lori. This is one of your tutorials I will be watching again and again. Such good information and demonstration on subjects I struggle with. I appreciate you so much! Thank you!!
I got a lot from this video. You explained the color wheel and color mapping better than anyone I've ever heard discuss it. I actually understood for once! And thank you SO much for sharing the great tip about how to move the eraser when creating highlights. I dont know how many times I have done a super fast streak of white with my eraser and completely botcheded my highlight rather than make it look more realistic. I love my electric eraser because it is capable of removing so much more color than a regular eraser, but I apparently didn't know how to use it properly til today! Your ribbon almost looks like it is literally off the page. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful tips and knowledge with those of us who are not yet pros, but strive to be great colorists/artists.
atI have found my new coloring HERO!! You are simply AMAZING!! How am I just now finding you and I have been into adult coloring for the past 7 months and I have watched TONS of You Tube videos on all coloring techniques, hacks, tips, and tricks, and everything else related to coloring!! I just finished following along to one of your videos coloring the palm tree leaves the one with the color combinations of Sienna brown, white, peacock green, apple green, and chartruse and it was an eye opener for me! No, my leaf doesn't look any where near as good as yours but it's definetly one of the best I have colored. I have NEVER been into art however 7 months ago I was trying to find activities for my 11 year old daughter and I to do together and we started coloring. Seven months later it has blossomed into my first set of 150 Prismacolor colored pencils and some Johanna Basford coloring books, along with hundreds of other mediums and coloring books. I am so into color theory and learning all about the color wheel and all the different types of colors, which colors complement and contrast each other, and all the coloring techniques. However when it get past the tertiary colors my brain can't seem to catch on and hold onto and hold onto the rest. I did purchase a color wheel and I REALLY want to learn how to use it and when to use it. Your videos are soooo informative and I love the way that you teach and your voice is so soothing and really creates an environment so inapt for learning!! i really would like to know if you have videos on how to use a color wheel and basic color theory so maybe I can get it to stick to my brain!! Because if I can learn all these things as well as the best blending, highlighting, shading, and layering techniques my pictures will turn out so much prettier, I just know it. Over the past 7 months I honestly haven't had that much time to devote to coloring due to some family issues, but those are beginning to resolve themselves and I have more time to color!! Yay for that!! You may as well say I am a truly beginning newbie at adult coloring as over the past 7 months I've only been able to complete 3 whole pictures. I've been able to do a few little things here and there but I really want to start getting whole pictures done. I've basically practiced on leaves, branches, and a few flowers. I did get the chance to color a very small birdie I turned into an Eastern Bluebird, that was fun. Oh and I've colored a few apples, grapes, and blackberries in Johanna Basfords Secret Garden . But, any ideas, tips, tricks, videos that you think would help me I would truly appreciate it. And thank you so much for your teaching, time, and effort you put into helping us all out. I also sent a request to join your Facebook page. Have a blessed night. Thanks again.
Please, please continue with the color theory. I've read several books, but watching something develop it into a real piece is far more useful, especially is there isn't a tutor who can show how, when and where something has gone wrong. I'm inexperienced, a novice, but I'm not unintelligent, just struggling to understand enough to put theory into practice. I also enjoyed the gentle critique you offer, and explanations why you work the way you do. Thanks 🕊👵🏻
This is the first tutorial I have seen from you and ive just hit subscribe. I'm bored of being lazy and colouring my books in solid colour when I spent my school years learning how to shade properly. The colour theory is great, I'm a qualified hairdresser and you told me things I didn't already know just in one video. Especially how the indigo with the red will always be a safe bet. I learnt alot more about contrasting colours for colour correction and mixing primary colours to make different browns and warm colours. Thank you so much I enjoyed every second x
This video was excellent!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge! One other place I have a hard time with shading is on folds! Like dresses or curtains. I would love to learn the "givens " for ruffles and folds from you. I just get it when you teach it! 🤔
I so appreciate the time and effort you put into your tutorials. You are a true jewel. Everything clicked with me. I color to help me with the loss of my Son. You are truly helping me save my sanity. I am so grateful!
I also color to keep my sanity from the loss of my son and the fact that I now have Fibromyalgia from the grief. I enjoyed the tutorial so everything I have read in the past actually makes sense. Thank you.
Perfect subject for me... my weakest points. Now that I started coloring I noticed that guessing how to blend and choose colors doesn’t work well. So I love this video. Thank you.
What a happy accident! I was scrolling on UA-cam a little while ago and up popped this video. I've recently gotten into (adult coloring books) and do okay, but want to increase my skills. You've helped me do that with one little video. Thank you! I subscribed and will take a look at other videos you've posted.
I have been looking for some "coloring for dummies" video, and yours is very easy and well explained. Thanks. From: someone who was gifted a coloring book and have no Idea ir artist skill to fill it.
What a wonderful teacher you are! I'm just starting out with coloring so I'm really learning a lot. I look forward to watching your other videos. Thank you for sharing this!
I've only recently started in the adult coloring craze & I have to say it is not as simple as it was when I was a kid!😃 I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who has trouble with choosing colors that go well together. I've been coloring for about a year now & still find that I'm having difficulties with it. Thank You so much for the tutorials & the tips that you provide in a manner that can be easily understood by ALL. I was beginning to think that I would be forever coloring pictures in the same colors that were in You Tube coloring tutorials because I had such a hard time choosing on my own. Hopefully in time & with lots of practice I'll be able to overcome this issue!!❤💛💚💙💜
You are pretty normal. It takes a while to be able to feel comfortable knowing what color to choose next. I do a lot of videos on the subject and I am happy to help you out. My Email is always open to questions too.
Wow you have explained this technique so so so much better then any other youtuber out there, they don't fully explain they just do like they are trying to hide a few secrets at the same time help. Your awesome thank you!😁👍
Just came across ur channel and I must say I'm so grateful for your channel ur content is exactly what I need so thank you and will be using ur video to learn and become better so tysvm
Thank you so much for making this video. I've been trying to learn how to blend and shade for years but I usually find it hard to understand when people try to explain it. Your explanation was very clear and easy to remember. Definitely going to start doing this. 😊
Thanks for sharing your shading techniques. I enjoyed watching your process. I also don't color to hurry up and get it done. I love shading and am ready to learn more techniques. I color to relax, and get my thoughts off the merry go round for a while. Coloring is a wonderful exercise in relaxation and even meditation. Have a great night, dear.
I found this so interesting and helpful. I don’t come by much of this naturally, so I try to learn as much as possible. I found your information on color theory so interesting - looking forward to more videos!
Wow, second comment on that and I thought people would not like it. I happen to love color theory too. I just didn't want to push it because it's sometimes a dry topic.
I strongly believe it is nurture that makes one an artist. All children are inherently artistic; I have never met a 5 year old that says "no, I can't draw" when presented with crayons, paint, any art materials really. The ones who get the gold stars and their picture hung up, parents who buy them supplies, and encouragement continue that and go from merely juvenile scribblings to what adults see as art. As teens and adults, our insecurities and drive for perfectionism interfere. I was lucky enough to not have that creative spark go dormant (in spite of an art teacher in hs that was insanely discouraging) and am very into colored pencil work. I have progressed immensely in the last 10 years, not because of a inherent ability (ie nature) but because I haven't stopped drawing, practicing, and exercising that part of the human nature in my self). I have tested my theory about nature vs nurture in regards to artistic ability on an adult (she was 22, I was 26 at the time) and we sketched out pumpkins and used the 1 light, 1 medium and 1 dark color method to shade them in.) When we were done we switched pictures, and went out to my brother, his friends, my parents and one of their friends. We asked what they thought. First they asked if my friend actually drew that, since it was "well known" that she was not "artistic in any way, and can't draw a stick figure" (her words, not mine). They just looked at the picture I had (I was holding the one she drew) and were like, "We already knew you could draw well so we aren't surprised how well you did". She surprised herself and I firmly believe that if she stopped saying to herself "I can't draw" and just kept practicing what she learned that night, that she could have been an artist just like anyone reading this. We all start the same, some people merely practice and continue that and develop it further than others. "Artistic" is a mindset.
Your one of my favorite youtuber ♥️ I love your videos thank you for everything you do for us you help me understand more about dark and light areas which I struggle with at times
There is definitely more to adult Coloring than what you realize. I want to learn how to smooth out my work. I see so many on the FB groups. Everyones is so smooth and neat.I'm Intermediate. Because I been drawing for years. And always used colored pencils. But you can always learn more...Indigo Blue is very pretty. I try to use colors close together....💖
Well my goodness Lori why didn’t know about this corner of youtube in which you play in!? I’m a card maker so I’ve been searching for tips tricks blending etc! I am subbed to your other channel. I guess I’m going to be binge watching you this evening! 💜
I don't normally discuss the other places I go here but I do over there. This is my peace and quiet. A happy place where drama doesn't happen. My calm retreat and happy place. Glad you found me.
I’m learning so much from you, blending techniques colours mixing matching just everything about colouring thank you Lori for your videos your a great teacher xxx 💕💕
Thank you for those at Touriel can you please do another one with a of a white color pencils from prisma color and how did you get your ribbon so blend it in did you use any type of Blenders or any paper stumps
Thx u for sharing. I second your emotion on all the reading about color theory is not going to do any good until you practice. At least that is how it works for me. Looking forward to your upcoming series.
Thanks for the shout out! Mud? Ahhhh! And I had gotten so good at mud colors! Layering? Now there is my Achilles Heel! I find I don't have the patience for all of that most of the time!
Thank you for this good explanation. Now i understand quite a bit more of how to color the right way. I can`t wait to test it out. But first i will watch a couple more of your videos
I have been trying for so long to learn how to figure out how the light source and shadowing work I am still learning. But the way you explained how you know where to put them where thing cross or come together.....It was like one of those ah-ha moments! Thank You So Much for that!!! The only part was what would be the reason you would say for putting the shadow at the ends of the ribbon (the points?) and also on the middle bottom part?? Hope You will continue sharing am looking forward to the rest of the week for sure to see what other knowledge you have to teach Beautiful ribbon by the way!! thank you.
Thank you so much. It helped me a lot. I like color theory as well. I have difficulty with the color wheel even though I have watched quite a few videos on it. I guess the more I practice will help.
Same here. I am on my 3rd 150 set and that doesn't include me buying filler pencils. My friend bought me a pack of 12 canary yellow pencils because I go though them so much. Next would be my black white and indigo blue. Non-photo blue also goes fast.
Thank you so much, this is your calling ! You have the ability to teach and demo. the way I personally learn . I'm off to see what other videos you have produced and learn from the master. Keep up the good work.
Your tutorial was so helpful. It’s one thing to watch someone produce a beautiful colored picture and hope that I can try my best to copy the technique without any explanation, but that isn’t always very successful. Because you take the time to teach those of us who are not already trained “artists”, I have the chance to at least look like I know what I’m doing. Your teaching skills are wonderful and I appreciate your helpful tips and suggestions. I can hardly wait for your next post💕👍🙋🏻
Thank you so much for spending your time teaching us all of these awesome techniques and facts. I always learn something new when I watch you. I SUBSCRIBED. Please keep your awesome videos coming. We appreciate you and your patience. Susan xxx
I looked for your videos to see if I could find a great example of coloring flamea for example in mythomorphia. Can you suggest or make a video on that? Please please please and that you in advance. Tori
I enjoyed your video. The information on color theory was great. Do you have books that you could suggest I read to develop my knowledge on color blending/color theory?
As I change over from a demo channel to more of an instruction one I'll be adding in a lot more color theory. This week I am doing beginning blending and over the weekend I'll be introducing 10 textures. Next week I'll probably do my mid week video on color theory. Keep in mind that theory without practical experience is useless. I learned all the color theory I have ever needed in a 3 hour lecture back in 101 art. After that it's all practice.
Maybe I'm weird. But when I was a Teen. I still loved to color. And if I was home sick from School..🙄...I always had to have mom get me a coloring book and crayons...lol. Was so happy they came out with Adult Coloring Books. And I do teh same thing. If I'm not feeling good. I want to color. I know I'm odd. don't judge....lol.
I am now thinking of making a color wheel with my pencils, I am a complete beginner and it’s hard for me to know which pencils make a good light, middle and dark range
Thank you! I have learned more today about blending & highlights than I have in 4 yrs of being a colorist. My only question is whether or not I can see every tutorial & still find time to color? Where should I go from here?
This is my question also, because I'm very new to adult coloring. I wish I found this passion for coloring a long time ago because I'm 48 now about to be 49 this Christmas. I don't know how much time I have left but I want to learn. Thank you for this video you made something make sense to me and that is where you put the darkest color in the corners and crevices. Thank you, thank you, and thank you! By the way I love the accent.
Na, I'll explain it so you understand it. If you pick away all the stuff you really don't need and then pull out the stuff you can use then it's not really that complicated.
I 100% agree!
I've learned more from this video than I have in the past six months. You must be a real art teacher. Thank you
Hello Lori. This is one of your tutorials I will be watching again and again. Such good information and demonstration on subjects I struggle with. I appreciate you so much! Thank you!!
Agreed
I’m learning sooooo much from you I’m already getting some compliments. It’s basic but NOT just hard same color anymore!!!!
You are an excellent teacher.

It's on the way. I had no idea so many people wanted it. I love Color theory and can ramble about it on and on.
Thanks for mentioning this, Kim!

I didn't know about the red/indigo blue either. I know I use a lot of indigo
I love the red bow beautiful 🤩 xx am a florist and love doing bows xx 😘
Love your tutorial. Color wheel helps. You learn something new everyday, thanks.

This was very helpful to show shadow and light sources.
Love that you showed color wheel & incorporated some color theory. It doesn't bore me, I love it & find it makes things easier to understand! Thanks!🙂
This video was excellent!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge! One other place I have a hard time with shading is on folds! Like dresses or curtains. I would love to learn the "givens " for ruffles and folds from you. I just get it when you teach it! 🤔

Every object has 3 colors in it....hmm. did not know that. Very good tip. Thanx!
Which basic eraser type do you recommend and which electric eraser is your favorite for Prismas?
Interesting approach. Where did you learn?
Great job explaining the light sources and shadows

Thank you so much. It helped me a lot. I like color theory as well. I have difficulty with the color wheel even though I have watched quite a few videos on it. I guess the more I practice will help.
Na, don't stress. I'll do a color theory lesson you will never need to watch another video.
Thank you so much for the color theory lesson, please keep them coming for I will be watching. Shana Tova.
Shana Tova to you too Renee. Blessings for this coming year.
Where can I get a copy of the ribbon to practice with?
Prismacolor are the only pencils I’ve replaced and I use them until they are too short to sharpen about a half inch.
Just absolutely brilliant!! thank you for doing this video, truly appreciate it so much 💖💖💖
Your tutorial was so helpful.
You are so sweet. I have the best subscribers. I'll have another one out in a day or two.
Very good. So much information.
New sub! I love your voice and the way you explain things. Your videos have really helped me. Thank you!
I love new subs! Thank you and I look forward to getting to know you.
Thank you so much for spending your time teaching us all of these awesome techniques and facts. I always learn something new when I watch you. I SUBSCRIBED. Please keep your awesome videos coming. We appreciate you and your patience. Susan xxx
Again another brilliant tutorial,thank you😊
So are highlights usually the part closest to you?
Thank you, so much more understandable the way you explain it.
Fantastic lesson, ty.
I looked for your videos to see if I could find a great example of coloring flamea for example in mythomorphia. Can you suggest or make a video on that? Please please please and that you in advance. Tori

Where to get the eraser
It's already in my intermediate book
thanks so much ...Jo
New sub here. Thank you for what your doing.
Love it !!!!
You’re an amazing teacher!
This is really helpful thank you.
I really learned a lot....thank you❤️
Brilliant, thank you!
Um, your only 48!
Color My World I only say that because I have so many health challenges and I am scared everytime I'm hospitalized.
WOW. THANK YOU!
Very well explained, but those colour wheels ,they can be so complicated for people like me ,thankyou for doing these very informative tutorials.
Na, I'll explain it so you understand it. If you pick away all the stuff you really don't need and then pull out the stuff you can use then it's not really that complicated.
Great information, very useful!
Sooo good! Thank u!
so cool! great tips !
