    Looking good from Ohio valley. Season is over. Couple light frosts and freeze in the morning. Starting OVA treatments today. 4 treatments with 6 day intervals. Once finished, I'll be adding mountain camp feeding to hives that need it and wrapping for winter. Good luck this winter.

    We don't use upper entrances at all in Sweden, especially not during winter. So it's definitely not necessary. 😜

      What sort of insulation do you put in the roof?

    • @attesmatte
      @attesmatte 4 роки тому +1

      @@PutEmInTheBox
      We only use insulated hives, which includes an insulated roof (it's usually polystyrene hives), but this year I added a quilt box type thing on top with wood chips to see if I can minimize the risk of moldy frames in the bottom box. 😊👍

    • @SuperBuickregal
      @SuperBuickregal 4 роки тому +1

      @@attesmatte Hello Sara, I am using the Finnish made polystyrene hives along with a US made variant in N.E Ohio and I used a modified hive box as a quilt box and found the bees just glued the screened vents on the bottom closed. I will try the hives in the normal setup this Winter. Let us know how it works for you next Spring please.

    • @attesmatte
      @attesmatte 4 роки тому +1

      @@SuperBuickregal
      If the bees close up the vents I wouldn't worry about it, they usually know what's best. 😜 There's really no need for an upper ventilation, the important thing in colder areas is that the cold outside air isn't chilling the roof too much, because that will make the moisture inside the hive to condensate in the "ceiling" and drip down on the cluster, and that can kill the bees. With insulation like a quilt box filled with wood shavings (or wool, or any other insulation) on top, the moist air will flow outward and usually condensate on the walls of the hive and just drip down the sides, which is perfectly fine and won't hurt the bees. 😊👍

    • @SuperBuickregal
      @SuperBuickregal 4 роки тому +2

      @@attesmatte l agree with this but found it odd that they glued the screen on the poly hives and not on the wooden hives’s???

    Nice vid Kamon. I winter colonies like those every year here in northern NY. They usually do better than big production colonies in the second year. Those young queen are really the heart of a working apiary. Been using Palmer daughters for years now. Love to see how they look for others. Where was the queen from the second colony from by any chance?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      Hey Clayton both are Palmer queens. I got 40 from him and made all the splits the same. You are very right young queens can really make or break a beekeepers year.

    You can still feed syrup when the weather gets freezing? I’m a new beekeeper and was told not to feed syrup when it gets below 50 because of moisture in the hive kills bees!

    Kamon, I am a newbie and I have 1 hive that is 10+ frames of bees in a single deep. I have put another deep box on top with some foundation frames and some without foundation. I don't have any of my own drawn frames yet except what is already in the single deep box. The bees have filled every available cell with nectar and sugar syrup and hence the new queen that I have in there has very little room to lay. They will not touch the top box at all and yet in the last week they have drawn out one of the frameless frames almost completely in less than a week! I am feeding them ss and pollen patties. They are taking the syrup but not the patty. I am in SE Alabama and we have mild winters respectively. We might get a cold snap that is below freezing for a few days at a time but it bounces back pretty quickly. Should I leave the top box on or take it off and let them get crowded in the one box. There are so many bees that I have to be very careful when using the hive tool. I am constantly, accidently squishing bees. I hate that. Thank you in advance for any advise you could give me. Anne

    • @buttsbeesllc4063
      @buttsbeesllc4063 4 роки тому +1

      Let them get full in the bottom box. The q is slowing her laying down so no problems there. You have to gauge how many frames of nectar/honey they have and what they need. You are able to feed through winter and if the hive is full them them alone til they need more. To get them in the top box (in spring) you bring up a frame of brood so they get the idea.
