SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
    Time: 2-3 hours
Cost: $20 for fertilizer and mulch
    Skill Level: Moderate
    Tools:
    Bypass pruners
    Gloves
    Rounded shovel
    Steps:
    1. Find a good place to put the transplanted rose bush. Rose bushes like a lot of sun, so look for spot with a lot of direct light.
    2. Early spring or late fall is the best time to transplant a rose bush because it’s coming off dormancy or heading toward winter dormancy.
    3. Wear a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of gloves to avoid getting hit by any thorns from the rose bush.
    4. Rose bushes have a very fragile root system and during any transplant, the root ball is likely to fall apart. Because of this, it’s important to cut the limbs back on the rose bush before transplanting it.
    5. Cut back the limbs by at least 50% using a pair of bypass pruners.
    6. To dig out the rose bush, use a rounded shovel to draw a circle about six inches away from the roots.
    7. Turn the shovel around and dig away from the root system.
    8. Dig down about a foot to get under the root system of the bush.
    9. Turn shovels back toward the root system of the bush and drive the blade directly under the plant at an angle.
    10. Use the shovel to pry out the bush and remove it from the ground. Again, the root system will be mostly bare. You’ll want to replant the rose bush quickly.
    11. Dig a hole twice as deep and twice as wide as the current root system using a shovel.
    12. Fill the hole a third of the way with compost. This will allow for better drainage and the roots to grow by keeping the soil from compacting.
    13. Mix more compost in with soil. This mixture will be used to backfill the rose bush.
    14. Place the rose bush in the hole and make sure the soil height is high enough so the base of the plant is even with the ground.
    15. Backfill the hole with the compost/soil mix using a shovel.
    16. Mix liquid root growth fertilizer with water in a bucket.
    17. Pour mixture all around the base of the rose bush.
    18. Add more of the compost/soil mix to bring the hole surrounding the bush up to grade.
    19. Water the plant twice a day for the next two days.
    20. After two days, add a layer of cedar mulch around the base of the plant, but not on the roots. This will keep moisture at the roots.
    21. If transplanted in the fall, be sure to trim the bush back again before the first frost and place a rose cone over the bush to insulate it through the winter months.
After the last killing frost in the spring, remove the cone and the bush should be ready to grow and bloom.

Start: Use the shovel that way, so we don't disturb the roots.
Finish: Doesn't matter, as long as we can lift it up.

    • @amznprime5145
      @amznprime5145 3 роки тому +2

@Tressa Exactly. I don't think rose roots are so easy to die. They are tough bunch. So, for ppls who want to transplant, as long as you don't just lift the stems, they'd be ok. You don't have to use the shovel THAT WAY.

LOL... fragile roots. My aunt asked me to move a rose bush (which we hoped would kill it) so that my grandmother could see it when she became sick. I dug out the root as much as I could and after digging down two feet I cut the root off and transplanted it. Figured the root left behind would die... The following year I had two bushes.

I have a rose bush that I need to move. But I'm nervous about doing it. My grandfather gave it to my mother the day I was born. It's been in the ground for 43 years. It's against a brick wall. Mom has died and I've moved to Texas it is currently in Louisiana. Her house is going to become a rent house for government housing. I know renters don't take care of stuff. It would be nice if somebody with experience could help me make sure there's a good transplant.

Roses are often hardier than they are often talked about. Follow the steps here when digging it up, wrap the root ball with some plastic and keep moist until you get it home and have the chance to plant it.
I have a rose that had just been lopped off at the base by someone and there was only two little scraggly roots left at best. I planted it anyway, kept it well watered and made sure soil was moist. This was two months ago, and it's now getting ready to bloom.

Adrya Webb can I ask you , will it survive If it’s not replanted within a few hours ? We are moving from one house to another and are taking a rose bush my husband got me when our first child was born. It’s in our contract 🤣. Our concern is actually getting into the ground on moving day with all we will have going on.

@@littlekingcobrasden4217 "I know renters don't take care of stuff."
I'm happy for you and that you've been fortunate enough to never have to worry about paying rent, I'm sorry for any damages or injury you've endured that have caused you to hold this belief, and I understand your concern for the rose bush as it is a priceless piece of your family history and a living memorial for your loved ones. With all due respect, there are countless people who own their houses, cars, boats, etc and choose to let those possessions fall into disrepair and ruin; just like there are countless people who rent the car they drive or the home they live in and choose to value and maintain their good condition and treat them with respect. As an aside there are many, many millions of people who own fine homes and have luxurious, immaculate possessions yet they do not care about or care for or take care of their body and mind and soul. Anyway, I wish you well and I sincerely hope that you were able to retrieve and replant your rose bush successfully and that it has continued to flourish, providing you and your family with beautiful memories and fragrant blossoms for many years to come.
