  • So you want to ski some big backcountry lines... So much of the process to climbing and skiing big mountain objectives is predicated on the research and planning that takes places in the weeks and days leading up to your adventure. This episode explains some of that process and shows how trip planning can be the difference between success and failure in the mountains while going out to attempt to ski an Idahoan classic line, the north face of Devil's Bedstead.
This is line 34 of 50 of The FIFTY completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Last episode, biking out of Death Valley. Next episode... e-bike. Coincidence I'm sure. Great video. Excited to try out the new S-Lab pedal system.

We tried to ski the bedstead 3 years ago. With 12 other people on the line above and below, it was extremely spooky that day. One person triggered a wet slab we could see as we were on the ridge about were you thought it was spooky. These lines are dangerous and people don't realize that other people can be an avalanche trigger themselves. We turned around shortly after we saw that wet slab. Crazy how many folks we saw going for it though.

This video made me realise that without any courses, years of experience nor mentors, I can drink Tin Cup whisky just like Cody.

I really like the educational content from this series. 100 Yes's to go up, and 1 No to come down, great words to live by (pun intended!). And the bike skiing is like the human form of Skijouring ha

Cody and Bjarne, you look and sound like the type of buddies I'd like to have on the mountains. Experienced, fun, and humble despite being such bad asses. We are waiting for you on our beautiful western alps! Much respect!

I’ve said this before, I really appreciate what you put in your vids. Your respect for the mountains, your planning, and your lack of hype.

Death Valley broke Cody so hard he's an e-biker now. All jokes aside, glad you recovered. Also, I would be totally into longer episodes 🤜🤛🙏🚀🎉

You don't have to worry about me. After viewing this, I will not say "Cody told me to go out and do this!" The reason I don't backcountry ski is that you can't visit the bar at lunch time. Despite that, I've spent enough time in the mountains during good weather, to appreciate every aspect of these epic descents. It's great that you showcase all aspects of the effort, which can include less than ideal snow.

Great video, as always! As someone taking photos in the mountains and on tours a lot, I would really like to see a Bjarne feature sometime :) eg, what gear you bring, how you carry it, depending on conditions and trips, etc! Keep up the project!

I enjoy how not every video is the same. This was down to earth and another solid summit. Good job at showing people they can achieve some rad lines with time and work.

My buddy told me that he likes to use a 99% safety rule when skiing. If he does 99% of the stuff right, he should be ok. I pointed out that he would die one out of one hundred times skiing with that logic. He was a bit stunned when he did the (quick) math, and acknowledged the fault in that way of thinking. I like your 100 to 1 rule better. 100 yes's vs 1 no, and the no wins. You are my beacon for good decision making in the mountains Cody. Thank you, and keep, keep on trucking.
