@DON HUANG Well, democracy's the rule of many, and even in a representative one, it's the will of the majority that's being imposed and enables these politicians. Sometimes, all we need is a benevolent dictator.
@DON HUANG I would postulate that no system can be inherently benevolent nor malevolent. Each has their own flaws, some more so when power resides in the hands of certain individuals. While an authoritarian nation's trajectory is dictated by the authoritarian, the democratic representatives' vision, by it's nation, in hopes that they align.
A nation like Singapore has enjoyed the benefits of what would be a benevolent dictator, contrast with that of the sufferings of the North Koreans. Several wealthy Middle Eastern nations also come to mind. You have your flawed democracy in the United states, but also full democracies in Northern Europe that have performed consistently well on the global rankings in terms of education, governance, health, and happiness.
A cynical view is often the realistic one, but no system is perfect, and they can only perform as well as those that serve it.

Another gentle reminder on upholding multilateralism, globalization and free trade. Climate change is also mentioned. Singapore, as usual, is ahead of the curve. Mr. Lee spoke brilliantly.
The US is losing influence, fast. The majority of the Americans may not know it, but the American think tanks knows this. Sadly even with all their brilliance, they are powerless. Mismanaged by the Trump Administration and made worse by Partisan politics in the Senate and Congress, America's relationship with friends and allies continues to either stagnate or regress. The call to action to fight Climate change by Mr. Lee is commendable but I worry that any impact will be minimal. We have to wait another 2 years till 2021 before there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the US will re-consider to join the CPTPP by then? The landscape is shifting and time and tide waits for no man. And that includes even the mighty United States of America. There will be difficult times ahead. Climate change is faster than ever. Even now, Indonesia peat lands and the Amazon forests of Brazil continues to burn, spewing tonnes of pollutants and carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere, accelerating climate change. Will the UN do something?
I extend my prayers to the world. We are going to need it.
