    PEMDAS-procedure: 8³ / 8² = 8¹ and 8¹ x 8 = 64

With the same base of 8, dividing 8 cubed (8 to the power of 3) by 8 squared (8 to the power of 2), you just have to subtract the exponents, meaning 3-2 = 1, leaving 8 to the power of 1 which 8. Then 8 x 8 = 64.

    We have 8^3 / 8^2 x 8.
    1. We follow Oder of Operations, so we’ll focus on 8^3 / 8^2.
    2. Notice that 8^3 / 8^2 has the same base, so we’ll use the rule x^a /x^b = x^a - b.
    So, 8^3 / 8^2 = 8^3 - 2 = 8^1 = 8
    3. Now we just have 8 x 8, which is 64.
    Final ans: d.) 64.

@@enriqueiii9209 This would only work if you have powers of 2 or 3. If you need higher powers (like 5) then you would likely have to use the notation given above which is fine and most people (at least programmers) know what this is.

You could also solve this by subtracting the exponents since the bases are the same (for multiplication, you would add the exponents). I see that you probably did it this way to show people if they didn't know this property of exponents they could still figure out the problem though. But as with many things in math, if all else fails, you can fall back on the long version of doing things if you remember the proper approach (formulas and mathematics). But learning things like the rule of exponnents can help for more complex problems like 8^10 / 8^7.

super simple remembering PEMA or Please excuse my Arithmetic
    rewrite:
    (1/8)² * 8 ^ 3 * 8
remembering that x to the a power divided by x to the b power is x to the (-b + a) we are left with:
    8 ^ (-2 + 3) * 8
    (8 ^ 1) * 8
    8 * 8 or just 64
You can also say a - b for the exponent math.

Solved at the thumbnail, the answer is d) 64.
    First, 8^2 is 64, and 8^3 is 8^2 * 8, so 8^3 / 8^2 = 8.
    And 8 * 8 = 8^2 which, as we've already seen, is 64.

64! There's a rule for dividing & multiplying exponents that share the same base, right? For division, you subtract the exponents: 8^3 ÷ 8^2 => 8^(3-2), for multiplication, you add: 2^2 x 2^3 => 2^(2+3).

Something I noticed was that if we have a number to the power of, let's say 5 and divide it by the same number to the power of 3, the final result will be the number to the power of 2. Basically just subtracting the second power from the first power. Is that always principle true (if the variable is the same)?

    • @discobear5752
      @discobear5752 Місяць тому

Yes, it's always true for subtraction of exponents. I'd post a link, but then my reply might get deleted. Do a web search using the search terms "law of subtracting exponents" and you'll find many videos and webpages as a result. Take your pick.

When the 8³ is divided by 8², because the bases are the same, one can simply subtract the lower exponent from the higher one, leaving 8 as the answer.
