I surprisingly liked this game quite a bit. I play very heavy games in general but this was a very nice change of pace. Great iteration on BGA as well.
Lol, agreed! After she said it was a 5min game that overstayed it’s welcome, I immediately went looking for it on BGA. I have to say, it’s a really fun filler game. Perfect to start a game night with. Could even be used to determine 1st player for the night’s main game. This one is going to sell a lot of copies.
Camilla would probably hate nearly every game I own with only 1 exception that I know she gave a 9 to. I don't have Captain Flip, but love playing it on BGA.
I heard so many board game channels talking about this game so I gave it a try on BGA where otherwise I would not be attracted to trying it. I got addicted to it. Cute and really fun. Easy yes but fun. I was surprised at how much I liked it.
Camila ;) do you realize that the game is targeting family segment? Suggestion ;) - perhaps when you review the game think of the "audience targeted" instead of what you like or do not like according to your personal taste... this game does not deserve 5 ... it is at least 7/10 in a family segment. (should Brass get 2/10 if I had to judge it according to my personal taste? because this is where I stand on Brass, and I think that's not fair on the game that many like) Going to pre-order this fine filler/family game ;) Thanks for the review, always appreciated!
Been on my wishlist for awhile and after I played on BGA it moved up to a must own. I doubt it gets played at game night (unless an expansion makes it more interesting), but this is definitely a purchase to play with my kids. Definitely better than a 5, and a 7.5 is probably where it is at. It would be an 8 or 8.5 if it could appeal to gamers a little more.
This game is awesome. I took it up to my moms this summer who is 78 and she loves games like wingspan for example and she said this is her new favorite. Simple quick silly and fun. Sometimes you just want that in a game.
It’s just a fun filler type game. I really enjoy it. Surprised to see a score of 5 here as that seems so low for a breezy fun game like this. Not every game has to be heavy much as I like those games too. Sometimes it’s nice to pull a game out and just chill and enjoy. That’s what this game is. If it’s wins the Spiel that wouldn’t be a bad thing as it’s a perfect family weight game. That said I hope Skyteam wins it as that game is just so so good. Captain Flip gets a high recommendation from me too though, if you take it for what it is.
I am excited for this game. I think it looks really fun! My question is, are all the cooks (for example) on the “wrong” side of the tile? Like I always put cardboard chits on their “correct” side, but I feel like that’s probably not possible in this game. Curious.
@@cursivecurses I don’t think you have the same board game craziness I do 😅 The “right” side is the rounded side. And the “wrong” side is the flat side. I’m guessing this explanation isn’t any better, but I’m hoping someone knows what I’m talking about
@@gailwondowski3207 Not THAT kind of board game crazy, no. ;) I still don't fully understand how you explain it, but I get that the tiles are not identical on both sides - I just opened my copy, stacked two tiles and you can clearly see the white paint bleed to the side of the tile, on only one side (the "top" I suppose) of each tile. Then I went and found two identical tiles, since there's a pair of each. Specifically I grabbed the two Swabby/Cartographer tiles. I thought for sure they'd be reversed, but I was wrong. The Swabby is the side with the white showing on the sides of both tiles. I'm guessing they just chose an ordering for the token sheet (e.g. all Swabby tops/X's bottom, then all remaining Cartographers top /Y's bottom, then all remaining...) and there's no mathematical rhyme or reason to what's on top/bottom beyond that. I hope this helps! P.S. Edit: it occurs to me the side with the paint bleeding over (I called it the "top") is probably what you meant by "rounded" side.
@@cursivecurses Top & Bottom! That genius! That will help my explanation a lot haha 😆 I would never have noticed the white on the tile (so kudos to you for the attention to detail in helping me!), but I will notice the feel, so I will alternate between top & bottom when I pull. Thank you so much for your help! I love kindness of the internet. Hooray board game community 🤩
Its excellent at being a game that gets families into games. Virtually no rules off the bat, but then the game shows itself as you play which is perfect for non gamers, and thats what the spiel des jahre is for. Irs not for gamers.
I think they do a great job of allowing each reviewer to voice their own opinions. A lot of times the disagreement comes down to the individual’s preferences. The panel reviews are usually for more popular games which are often popular because they’re good so you can expect more positive feedback as a result.
I agree with Camila and Tom. The game gets stale quick and has no depth to explore. So if it wins, it's a weak SDJ winner because it fails to captivate at both family plays and game nights. Which is where games like Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne shine. The lack of player interaction also hurts it for me.
If you dont have the ability to review the game for its intended audience then why turn up? We all know youve played more complex and demanding games so maybe find a panel who can share more enthusiasm.
"Intended audience" easily becomes an excuse that every game deserves a positive score because someone it's meant for will like it. We have to review the games how we subjectively feel about them.
@thedicetower I don't think so at all. Clearly the game gets misrepresented if the people reviewing are too experienced in the world of gaming. I know a lot of reviewers that are enjoying this game for what it is. I can feel the dismissive vibe and maybe a scoring system just doesn't work here. I prefer Tom's seal of approval. It takes into consideration of the intended audience. This just left me feeling negative about a fun game.
Additionally, if Ark Nova is a 10 then Love Letter would be a 5 by this criteria. But I would put Love Letter as a 10 in the context of its intended audience. People who want a short fun filler game.
Milla gives plenty of short and quirky games a higher score than this. This one just didn't work for her, and she should give this game the score she feels about it. No reviews on the channel should inflate their personal feeling toward the game because of "intended audience." Watch Tom's review of Trio and you'll see him come in lowest on a game that other people enjoy.

I can always count on Camilla to dislike the ones I like and like the ones I dislike :)
🤣i came here to say the same thing!

I enjoy this as a game I could play on a Sunday morning over some conversation and coffree.
I LOVE Captain Flip 🏴☠️
It's great! My kids love it, I love it! Don't listen to grumpy people like Camilla 😂

She is my least favorite out of all of them.. Just the way she talks about games and explains them does not resonate with me
I agree she often does this. She rates on her own tastes only not considering the Audience.

Fun, simple game that's so easy to play on BGA.

There isn't a really correct side - there are two copies of every pair in the bag. You just store the tiles in the bag.

My game of the year for sure. A smash hit quick game for every group I introduce it to.
Is this the new Carcasonne?
I like it because it’s light and airy. I have enough Kanban and Age of Innovation euros on my shelf. And sometimes, a 5-minute game is perfect.
Looks like a winner. There's always room for a lighter game with a smaller footprint that still looks fun for everyone
Fairy Tale Inn Reimplementation by the same designers?
Been playing it on BGA. It’s a decent filler.
Its perfect for younger kids

The name is a pun on Captain Phillips?
Oh yeah I remember playing this one on BGA a while ago. It was pretty good. Nothing incredible imo
I wish more Dice Tower reviews had dissenting views/scores. In either way.
We can't and won't disagree on purpose. :)
