Do you pick fabric or pattern first when you create something?

Your fabric stash is epic! You could make some stunning garments and even quilts from all that rainbow beauty.

Hi Rochelle, I sometimes pick the pattern first, other times I pick the fabric first and once I got some buttons then had to find a pattern and fabric to go with them. Never rule anything out that gets your creative juices going. Happy sewing everyone.

Thank you for this!!!! I can see picking the pattern first then the fabric. Most times I cannot decided on fabric, so I figured if I pick the fabric first. The pattern will come to me quicker.

Rochelle, my darling, you are right on time as usual. You have a wonderful stash to pull from. I’m especially a fan of House of Mami Wata. Pattern hacking/smashing up with what I already have is the goal. I will pair some HOMW fabric with an alternating plaid to make a tiered peasant dress with sleeves using a Butterick and McCalls patterns I already own for an autumn look. I love new fabric and patterns like the girlie but there is creativity in using what you have already purchased. Another timely and helpful video. ❤

Kimberly, I agree with you. Sometimes, you find inspiration in the fabric and patterns you forgot about. I love CJ from @houseofmamiwata. Customer service is golden!!!!! I've been using up a lot in my stash, so I haven't been purchasing much, but she knows I'm over here eyeballing everyone of her posts.

Rochelle, you know purchasing fabric and purchasing patterns are two seperate events. A long time ago, my purchases were project based. Then doing hauls became a thing. This year, I reduced my fabric and pattern purchasing significantly hoping to feel inspired. You're right. It's a good idea to revisit what one already has. So far, I haven't come across a piece of fabric that I had to have (though I did treat myself to a few pieces from HOMW for my birthday😅) and watching your "what's new in patterns" videos has caused me to think twice about buying any because the duplicate/reissue situation seems to be off the chain😮! You've saved me some big bucks!
After watching this, I'm feeling the spark of inspiration being lit once again!❤❤❤

I Rochelle l did exactly what you did, it wasn't because of losing my sew joy, but because not knowing what 's in my stash. It is so much fabric l have to go through my fabric bins to pull out what I have a desire for. So, l look through my pattern drawer to find a pattern l desire to sew, then l check to see if it is enough for me to make it. I love the journey of seeking thru my fabric and patterns for my next outfit. It 's so much fun. I have been watching you Rochelle for a while and l am happy to know you thru you tube. You are one of my sewing sisters. Keep doing what you're doing! Great job! 👍👍❤

This usually happens to me around December of every year and lasts until early spring. Great ideas! Blessings! ❤

Thank you so much Tea! This usually happens in Fall because we do not have a fall or winter, so I'm stuck sewing summer and spring items all year. Blessings!

Hi Rochelle, I always pick my pattern first. I enjoy looking through the pattern books to see what I like.

I use to look through the books in the store, but now I go straight to the drawer and pick them up.

First of all... Girl, I'm JEALOUS of that sewing stash! 😍 I don't think I've ever purchased material and pattern at the same time since my Easter outfit I made in High school. A peasant blouse with 3 tiered skirt. Laura Ashley mcCalls that I still have. Don't you get rid of your patterns please. That pattern won't fit now but what are we all seeing now? Peasant tops and tiered skirts. 🤣 Just get rid of the " what the heck was I thinking that day" patterns.
Thank you for an inspiring video. I did it. I looked at my fabric stash... It worked!

Patricia, I know exactly what you mean. I have patterns I know I'm not going to do anything with because my style has changed so I will get rid of those patterns first.

Thank you for sharing. I'm looking at my fabric to see what I can make. You have beautiful fabric. I pick my patterns first, then fabric.

V1966 was on my list this summer, but I ran out of time, so I will live vicariously through you!! I’m trying to work only from my fabric stash this winter. I have two old/new jacket pairings planned: some lovely wool tweed I bought a few years ago paired with V1993 and V2053, both released within the last year and more modern feeling than the French/Chanel jackets I’d originally planned.

I think V1966 will be wonderful to make. I can't wait to see what you make Emily.

My fabric stash always surprises me - "Oh, I forgot about that one!" Same with the patterns, which is why I have duplicates - I liked it but forgot I had it and bought it again 😁. However, I know sometimes just looking at what I have isn't inspiring because I'm like a kid who wants a new toy and is tired of the ones they already have...or the amount of fabric isn't right for the pattern I want to use, or I don't think the patterns I have are right for the fabric I want to use. I buy too much fabric, can't begin to sew it all for the season we're going into and have to put it away for another year which makes me feel like I failed, so that's no fun. I'm trying to be serious about whether I'll really use something, trying to use my stash, and trying not to add to my fabric or patterns right now.

Mary, that's what I'm doing now. I'm using my fabric stash and only have to buy plain fabric. I'm build on things I already have in my wardrobe.
