Leonard Nimoy was amazing as the sane Galvatron. That said, Frank Welker did a great job as the unhinged one.
Yes indeed. Both were great. I'd argue that Frank Welker could even do a sane Galvatron pretty well with the same voice, which in my opinion is scarier than anything else. Listen to Galvatron speak in the commercial "And it will be the last time we meet" and then in Webworld when he says "I know what I must do."

Welker and Nimoy were great. Having said that, I wish Galvatron had kept Welker's Megatron voice in TTM and Season 3.

Galvatron going insane did make a lot of sense, he had a powerful mental link with what was essentially their universes personification of Evil in Unicron.
It also fit with the greener leadership style of Rodimus Prime, who was having trouble entering the role. Having an Unhinged Clinically Insane Leader take on a Novice Leader was really good.
Except it was the plasma bath that caused the permanent brain damage...well, until Optimus used the matrix fixing him.

G1 is by far my favorite version of Galvatron. Heck, to me that’s the only Galvatron. If Galvatron was never Megatron, he isn’t Galvatron.
For me it’s Nimoy who seals the deal in the movie

I’d give anything for a Leader class G1 faithful Galvatron. We got it for Megatron and Starscream in Combiner Wars as well as Optimus and Rodimus in Power of the Primes. Galvatron might be next after maybe Soundwave, Shockwave, or Bumblebee.

It is a cool line, most everything about the movie (except for Wheelie) is cool in my mind. The tone, the soundtrack, the characters, the final showdown preceded by Optimus plowing through enemy hordes...

Galvatron being crazy was entertaining to watch, Galvatron and Rodimus prime was something different from what Season 1&2 have been doing for a long time. but I do agree that some point Galvatron should of been sane probably for an episode which shouldof happened in webworld.
I would love to see Optimus and Galvatron fight more. Galvatron usually either fights Rodimus Prime or Ultra Magnus (especially in the comics for the latter).

G1 Galvatron's my favorite! Love his design, goes to show that G1 will always have the definitive designs for most characters!

For a while I thought the time frame of G1 Galvatron being out of his mind was like a result of "I got supercharged by a god of evil, and I still lost".
Not exactly. In the film, Galvatron proved quite cunning and competent. It was his time in Thrull's lava that really turned his insane. It was different in Japan, however.
And Rodimus got supercharged by. A god of Good.
I always wished in Dark of the Moon when Sentinel Prime broke bad he would have said something like "I reject the mandate of Primus, I no longer consider myself a prime...I am Galvatron! "
Especially considering who voiced Sentinel Prime.
Then we would have gotten Galvatron Prime. Plus Sentinel only got bad because he wanted Cybertron to be restored by any means.

Megatron in Armada should of stayed as Megatron throughout the series, then becomes Galvatron in Energon throughout that series.
It happened that way in Japan. The dub kept switching the names.
It's because Hasbro wanted to keep the trademark (Japan has different trademark laws) and because "Megatron" just sells more toys. Aaron Archer personally wanted to call the Energon toy Galvatron Imperius. 😂

Is it just me, or the writers missed an epic opportunity to make Optimus call him Megatron instead of Galvatron?
I was thinking about this the other day, and yes, they certainly missed an epic moment. I would have loved to see Galvatron's reaction.

I personally think that Galvatron not being connected to Megatron is bad comedy
During the Beast Wars era, Meagatron (purple dinosaur who went 'Yes' all the time) served Galvatron(fought Leo Convoy). However, they were named after Galvatron and Magatron but were their own characters. Like how Optmus Primal(the gorilla) was named after Optimus Prime, but was not Optimus Prime.
Once I would have thought of the notion that Galvatron and Megatron being different characters as heresy, but I also would have thought of Megatron having a redemption arc and joining the Autobots as heresy and IDW turned that into the best version of Megatron ever, and likewise made me love the idea of Galvatron being someone else.
That said, I still love the G1 cartoon Galvatron (though why Frank Welker didn't try to mimic Nimoy's voice for him is something I'd love to ask him) because of how utterly unhinged he was. The best S3 stories ("Webworld" and "Dweller in the Depths" are the best S3 episodes you can't change my mind) heavily feature him.
While I prefer his movie/cartoon colors, I kinda like the fact that the Marvel comics version of Galvatron uses the toy colors as it helps differentiate him. It doesn't hurt that the Marvel comic was better than the G1 cartoon about 90% of the time.

I'm from UK so grew up with Simon Furman's amazing storytelling. What he did with Galvatron leading up to the amazing Time Wars was genius.

I've always admired the movie for having the guts to pull off so many massive status quo changes. Even if not everyone was into them, they were way more daring than what most cartoon narratives ever experiment with!

You forgot the best part of the episode "The Ultimate Weapon": namely, when Swindle tried to make Galvatron PAY for Metroplex' transformation cog! To this day, I am SHOCKED that Galvy didn't do to Swindle what he did to Starscream, considering how much less patience he had than when he was Megatron!
And Swindle...well, greed overrides his logic circuits on a daily basis! 😂
That's why I mention that he was more like his old self. He didn't outright kill Swindle. But I used that bit in another video and probably will in part 2 of this.

Web World was one of the best episodes as it was the only decepticon centered episode.
As a kid, after the Galvatron rebirth in the movie I remember considering Galvatron as the most grossly overpowered character. Probably had a lot to do with turning Starscream into metal shavings with 1 shot, and annihilating Ultra Magnus with ease in the same movie. Anything that got blasted by him died immediately. His insanity was menacing for an 9 year-old, too.
Watching Welker’s TV clips now, it’s kind of hilarious just how maniacally insane and unpredictable Galvatron was.

Well, there are not so bad.Majority of them were after g1 megatron recolors, and just because is a recolor doesn t mean is bad. But I agree that even tho he is very importent character in Tf history, he doesn t have that much presence he deserts ( and even do I don t like him as a character, I m still respecting his legacy)

The UK Marvel stories were so amazing, so creative. That version was easily the best, loved the time travelling all-powerful totally mad Galvertron. The artists were just brilliant. the colours just jumped off the page. When he battered the Dinobots, Shockwave and destroyed Centurion!

Galvatron's G1 animation model (particularly in the movie) is and likely always will be my favorite character aesthetic. From the arm cannon to his "crown" helmet, everything about his look is perfect in my eyes. So much so that I am trying to track down a FansToys Sovereign, because that is the single most faithful real world depiction of him to date.
His original toy was gray?! This is bad comedy.

Even though I grew up with the Bayverse version of galatron my favorite will always be g1.
I still remember getting Galvatron for Christmas in (what had to be) '86. After that brief moment of, "Well, this looks nothing like I expected," I proceeded to have a ton of fun. I had this running theme back in my childhood action figure stories where not only did all of toy lines (you know, TransFormers, He-Man, Thundercats, Secret Wars, Star Wars, Voltron, etc, etc, etc...) exist in the same world, but in those pre-Christmas days, I pretended like the box they were kept in was like a big block of ice that would soon thaw ("yes" to any questions you might have about surprises on Christmas in my youth). This was always the most fun when it was a major character, like Galvatron. Aside from the stark differences in appearance between toy and cartoon, I still loved that figure and is one of the few I really, really wish I still had.

As the video shows, Galvatron was listed on his Tech Specs as City Commander, because the figure was released before the movie. That's why the ads always show him as Ultra Magnus's nemesis, since that was also his title.

I think that the voicing of Galvatron is accurate because when Unicron forged Galvatron, he took on the Great Leonard Nimoy's voice, but when he was plunged into Thrull's plasma pools, his vocal circuits could have been fried, becoming the higher-pitched Raffish-Ralphesque Galvatron by the Spectacular Frank Welker. That makes sense, right?

One thing that worked really well with Galvatron in G1 is how after the movie the change in voice actor coincided with Galvatron being affected by the plasma bath and his subsequent madness. The torment he endured under Unicron's control I can imagine could have contributed to his less than healthy mental state in season 3. It demonstrates good writing where the writers give the audience's imagination something to work with when trying to make sense of changes necessitated for production reasons such as Frank Welker taking over from Leonard Nimoy in voicing Galvatron. Nimoy, to me voiced a different version of Galvatron, one that was powerful and ruthless with only the overwhelming power of Unicron to really trouble him. After the movie Galvatron seems deranged and scarred by the humiliations experienced in the movie and the raspy voice of Welker meshes with that rather brilliantly. For all the shortcomings season 3 had (particularly with the consistency of its animation) this was one of the strong points for me. The fact that they made something of an arc with Galvatron's madness gave season 3 some semblance of serialized continuity even though the episodes were mainly episodic except for the multi part episodes.
It is kinda funny to me how in the current century Hasbro is forced to keep rehashing the same characters to maintain the trademarks which is in sharp contrast to the height of G1 where they couldn't wait to discard fan favorites in the movie to push new characters onto toy store shelves. Back then their actions were certainly bold and appreciated in retrospect but at the time there was a bit of backlash at how sudden the shift was. Nowadays in newer series characters can die and self sacrifice but there's no tension like when Optimus first died because the fanbase knows the core characters will be back in a new guise in the newest reboot that Hasbro rubber stamps to sell new toys to a new generation of kids.
And to be honest I don't mind the rehashing that occurs with the animated series as they're mainly for new generations of fans and they don't really besmirch the memories of G1 due to the level of separation they usually have. But I do mind the Michael bay movies as they were just dumb and tried and failed spectacularly to make live action TF appealing to the generation that grew up with the original cartoon. It saddens me greatly that age of extinction was the highest grossing movie of 2014 which was otherwise a good year for me personally and a year with two great MCU movies that were much more deserving of being highest grossing of that year.

My favourite Galvatron is the Marvel UK. There is a third Galvatron knocking about in Marvel continuity. He first appeared in Aspects of Evil: Galvatron and possibly is the same Galvatron in Perchance to Dream.

I always preferred galvatron to be an evolved form of megatron. If I were to keep the connection, I'd have galvatron be a megatron from a parallel timeline like in the marvel comic.
