(Reads title) I dunno, is using your kitchen to cook food also outdated? If you are planning to use your kitchen to cook, counter space is important. If you only use it for filming Tiktok vids then you can rip out that counter and put in a fish tank or something I guess

We moved into our new house, almost 6 months ago. We are in our 60’s and this is the first time we have an island. Our previous home had such a small kitchen there wasn’t anywhere to put an island or even a small table. Our previous home had a large kitchen with room for a large kitchen table. I have to say, that having an island is a wonderful addition to the kitchen. Our Island also has wonderful large draws for pots and pans and baking equipment. It also has two smaller drawers for kitchen utensils and for linen. The one thing I am glad is the sink is not in the island. This gives lots of room for baking, chopping vegetables, and as you stated, when bringing the groceries home, somewhere to place the shopping 🛍️ so you don’t have to place it on the floor. This saves the old back from bending over constantly to put the groceries away. I’m so grateful for this large beautiful island. I’m just sorry it took 40 years to get one! 👍🤗🇨🇦🎄

I've always lived in spaces where a kitchen island would actually detract from how the space is used. I think the impulse to center the whole kitchen design around the feature of an island has become so commonplace that it can start to feel expected. I don't think islands are going anywhere but the double islands and huge islands will leave a dated impression eventually.

I made this same comment about gigantic kitchen islands in another video a couple of years ago, but when I was working in a residential architecture firm we would often have clients with more money than taste insist we design these oversized "status" double islands. I never understood the appeal or functionality of a double island. Anytime I'd see one I'd assume the homeowners had like 7 kids who sit at one to do their homework. That or they were those weird parents who don't allow their kids to go in the kitchen, so sitting at the farthest one to eat was as close as they'd get.

Double islands are for “status” more so than function and beauty in my mere opinion. A waterfall island is heavenly, just beautiful. I couldn’t imagine life without my island and all its drawers holding my cookware, dinnerware etc. I didn’t grow up with one so didn’t get chased around one like you, I can’t imagine you EVER being naughty nor cheeky as a kid! 😅

Aren’t kitchen islands just the result of open concept kitchens? Back in the day a separate kitchen would have four walls and a door. An island is just the fourth wall and the door taken down and replaced by the island to be open air. So it doesn’t strike me as a fad, but an evolution of how homes are laid out.

    • @jenniferfriesen7691

This is the angle that Design Daddy missed. My new apartment has a kitchen island because the apartment is open concept. I find that I'm not using the space as efficiently as I did when I had a more traditional kitchen setup. I think I prefer the traditional setup tbh. If/when I own a home which has more space, I'd consider an island then.

You hit the nail on the head. It's a generational thing - A lot of younger adults don't know how to cook. If you don't cook, you don't buy many groceries, you don't use many pans and cutting boards, and you basically need a microwave and that's it. Of course they think islands are unnecessary. However, it's essential to our cultures that SOMEONE is cooking... not just restaurants. As you said, however, this requires space. The housing market has to permit people to have a reasonable kitchen space. I'm hoping the pendulum will swing back to more traditional food prep at home, and the kitchen will thrive again.

Here in Germany kitchen islands are not very common. But when I renovated my kitchen last year, I installed an island instead of the former peninsula, because I hate corner cabinets. It is a big kitchen (we call it 'living kitchen') where it is enough place for a dining table, too, but I don't want to clutter the table with cooking stuff or shopping bags, and I have a lot of working space and storage. So I'm happy to have both a table and an island.

Islands are far to practical to get rid of. Also, I think not having one would hurt the resale of the home. I live in Texas & practiced as a professional designer for years. I do not personally like double islands but see them often. I like more intimacy in a kitchen. There are concepts to add more counter space like a rolling island that can serve multi purposes, rather than two. I like waterfall edges but feel it is a trend like so many that you may tire of even though I wouldn't. I cook & can't imagine eliminating my island. Love your videos! ❤

I did something different in my house. I threw down the wall between the kitchen and dining room and build a wall of grey stone to hold a large leathered black slate table. The stone travels up the end of the table and over it from the ceiling. It now serves as a formal dining table and a kitchen island. It was a very expensive job, but worth it. It looks magnificent and opens up the views to all of the first floor rooms while also dividing them to some extent.

I just moved out of my large open concept apartment with a giant kitchen and huge island into a closed floor plan 1920s apartment with a small U shaped kitchen and I prefer my kitchen now. Also I have always preferred the kitchen table as opposed to the island. I never used my island when I had one. I would use the countertop near the stove or the countertop near the sink. Having the island in the middle of the kitchen was just in the way. I love having an antique wooden table in the kitchen as an informal every day dining area. It makes much more sense and is more intimate. I don’t like sitting on counter stools or bar stools. I’d much rather have a cozy table than an island that I never use.

Aside from the fact that a kitchen table does not provide the storage a kitchen island does, it performs all the same functions..... even having a surface to unpack your groceries !!! I grew up in a house with a table in the kitchen rather than an island and we did everyting around that table from homework, to family discussions to playing games to having afternoon tea, to havng guests for dinner .....and I did the same in my 1000 sq ft condo opting for a L shaped layout and table in the cnetre rather that a confined U Shape the builder was offering ...and I love it ..... but if your gonna have an island..... a waterfall edge is a must :)

Kitchen islands are an integral component to the kitchen design layout having both aesthetic and functional purposes. They are timeless and not going anywhere . The waterfall edge is a modern design trend, not sure if it’s longevity, but it’s an absolutely beautiful new addition to the concept of the kitchen.

In smaller spaces the L-shaped islands at the end of the counter are great ways to add an island without compromising central floor space. The L islands are also good if you want a table in the center of a square or smaller kitchen.

We live in a small 1940s cape style cottage- the entrance is directly into the kitchen (no entryways or mudrooms), and there’s no dining room, so our kitchen table has to be in the middle of our somewhat small kitchen (there’s no room for a table anywhere else in the house- I have a vintage expandomatic in the living room for special occasions). It’s of the time period as tables used to be in the middle of the kitchen, islands became more popular after the 70s. I do love it, although I’d prefer it more if our kitchen didn’t have to double as a mudroom! Plus having experience with both, I think it’s way easier with kids having a table in the middle. Plus I sit and prep at the table with others, which is honestly preferable for me. In short, it goes with the style of the house, but I don’t hate islands, either.

Hello from Europe! If you need work space a table is fine, if you need a water tap in front of your nose it´s not. If you want to sit comfortably a table is better. If you want the adventurous feeling you might fall backwards anytime (after a glass of wine perhaps) a bar stool and kitchen island is better (and you might get rid of your guests sooner). Personally I prefer an old fashioned wooden table.

The kitchen in my current home is original and for whatever reason, I absolutely LOVE IT. The "L" design just WORKS and the too small Island is just fine. Couldn't live without it. Most kitchens run pretty small in my country, even in bigger houses and if the kitchen is big enough, you'll be more likely to find an informal dining table instead of an island. Omg! I'm so activated by this topic! This opinion thinking that Islands are fast approaching as a dying trend is insane to me! It's literally a purposeful utility. So are we thinking of getting rid of bathroom vanities since that takes up a lot of bulk room also? It's so telling that anyone who came up with this idea that it's a passing trend either doesn't have a family, doesn't spend any time in the kitchen or is a slob and eats take-out on the couch because they don't have a dining space. That being said I do agree with the backlash of the double island being outdated.

I'm from argentina and is just so wild to think about home prices in other countrys. It's true that for the new generations is almost imposible to dream about owning a home with our economy, but like a five bedroom here in a private neighbourhood is around 400k, and a 2 bedroom in nice parts of the city goes from 70k to 150k 😅

Yes to Island! Im like the priest in the confessional while I’m cooking I get the kids on the other side telling me all about their latest love/breakup, my friends nibble cheese as I plate up. It’s convenient, and so beautiful with a big vase of flowers. Will never be a trend, it a necessity in a large kitchen area, particularly open plan home

I never liked islands and in my new home with enough space they are banned. Sitting at a bar is very uncomfortable, unless you are in a bar. It must be worse for children. Instead I have a big table to prepare food, eat and be together. Maybe because I am from Europe and our flats are small.

In Italy we don't have kitchen islands, we have dining tables and the sink is always facing the wall near the fire, we use tiles, Marazzi, Ragno for example, also quite expensive ones of gres, never marble or natural stone because they stain and in kitchen is a waste of money; we use it for the flooring of other rooms and in the bathrooms for shure, in US your walls are light and fragile so I think is the reason why you don't use the kind of tiles we use here, where we have brick and stone walls, thanks for your work. ❤

Yes to the kitchen island. Yes to a double island if you are taking away counter space like when you have a banquette in the kitchen where you would normally have a counter. No to the double island if there isn’t a reason to have it there. Yes to the waterfall island and I agree it’s timeless if you use the right natural stone. What are your thoughts on scullery/prep kitchens?

  • @robinbirdj743

You’ve failed to consider one thing. The island as a clutter magnet, as all flat empty surfaces are. It must be regularly cleared and wiped, much more often than a countertop. Sipping coffee does NOT usually happen at the island. Neither does homework. I raised 8 kids and none preferred to do their homework in the midst of the
Madness. Just no. And that fact that people are doing DOUBLE islands robes their not out but will soon have to be rethought yet again. I’m going with a movable, lower surface- a table with folding sides.

Love the photos you showed - beautiful! (Also wondering about physically supporting a block of stone - island - in your kitchen; How much support is needed under that? Yes additional structural support is required for something like this. We did a custom marble tub in a clients bathroom and we had to add in structural support beams on the second floor to accommodate it. It’s a very expensive addition for anything thinking about it

I am a Designer, my thoughts.... I have NEVER Liked waterfall countertops, and double islands are not very functional in most layouts. But.... I personally would never buy or design a house without an Island. I had to elimoinate an island in a kitchen renovation I did a few years ago, as there was no room for one. Trust me I tried! But... I compensated with a peninsula in the kitchen to give more workspace. I do not think Kitchen Islands will ever go out of style. Who wants to cook facing a wall or cabinet 2 feet away from your face! Not me, and not any of my clients. PS I love your videos. :)

It is just so handy, and I love when entertaining that my friends can sit with me, sip a cocktail while I finish up last minute things for the meal, but out of my way. The waterfall countertop is beautiful so yes if your tops are worthy of the showoff. My thoughts...since home prices are out of hand for the masses and many are having to go with much smaller square footage there are so many homes that just do not have the space for them...so, is this a narrative going around to make people who can't have them feel better? 🤷‍♀Two islands...ridiculous and a way to show you have never ending money.

I agree that we used to have the kitchen table and did so much work and gathering there. A table looks more hygge than an island. I don't use hte kitchen table it for kitchen work because the height doesn't fit. I want to stand doing kitchen work so that I can move around easily and the table is too low. But even if I sat down, the height was wrong, too high this time.

As far as double islands go. They've always seems a bit odd to me since one island would always be in the way, which I assume would make cooking a bit frustrating or more likely only the first island would be used and the other one would be wasted space. It would make more sense to use the extra space for a pantry closet or a large table.

Islands are a must for me!!! Period!!! I tore a wall out in an old house to incorporate an island as well as a more open floor plan between my living room and kitchen. I have never doubted nor regret my decision. Even when I am not cooking a thing (which is most times) , people sit at the stools and lean around the island stand in the walkway areas with their wine or martini glasses; moving occasionally to allow people to pass on either side of the island. Fun times!!! I'm never excluded from conversations while in the kitchen nor is anyone else when they are in the kitchen. Also, when the husband and I are the only ones at home, we eat at the island more than we do the kitchen table. And, what I love most about the openness, is that people actually help with the dishes!!! Yay!! Win, win!!!

Kitchen islands have replaced kitchen tables as the standard working and eating surface in a kitchen. So it's a little odd that politicians still refer to families gathering around kitchen tables to eat and commune, but not around kitchen islands. Maybe it doesn't sound cozy enough.
Possible the two-island crowd might enjoy trading one of their islands for a table.

I have a curved island with no seams, but didn’t pay through the nose. I guess I got lucky that my builder offered it as a standard option. I like it because it’s one less sharp edge in the kitchen and feels more aging-in-place friendly. It also allows me to create a conversation opportunity so all my counter stools don’t face in just one direction. I do feel double islands feel like a science classroom but that is personal opinion. Loved the kids running around the island comment.
