    Explore the captivating beauty of Abashiri in Hokkaido, where you can see stunning drift ice on a drift ice cruise, visit historic prisons, and the vibrant local culture, offering a unique travel experience in Japan!     How to get there: You can visit Abashiri as a day/overnight trip from Sapporo, the journey takes approximately 3.5 hours by train. The limited express train "Okhotsk" operated by JR Hokkaido connects Sapporo and Abashiri. There are also coach tours available from nearby cities. Once you arrive in Abashiri, there are also some other activities you can do like the following:
    1. Take a cruise on the Abashiri Drift Ice: Embark on a unique cruise experience during winter to witness the incredible drift ice phenomenon in
    2. Visit the Abashiri Prison Museum: Explore the former prison and learn about its history through interactive exhibits, including a replica of a prison cell and displays showcasing the life of inmates.
    3. The Sea of Okhotsk. Admire the floating ice formations and the breathtaking views all along the coastline.
    4. Explore the Abashiri Ryuhyo Museum: Discover the wonders of the region's drift ice at this museum. Learn about the science behind it, view aquariums with local marine life, and even touch real ice.
    5. Walk along Abashiri Port: Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the picturesque port area. Take in the views of the Sea of Okhotsk, visit the nearby souvenir shops, and sample fresh seafood at local restaurants.
    6. Visit Mount Tento: Take a cable car ride to the top of Mount Tento for panoramic views of Abashiri and the surrounding landscapes. The observation deck offers stunning vistas, especially during sunrise and sunset.
    7. Experience traditional Ainu culture: Learn about the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido at the Abashiri Ainu Village. Participate in workshops, watch cultural performances, and see traditional Ainu houses.
    8. Visit Lake Abashiri: Enjoy the tranquil beauty of Lake Abashiri, which freezes over during winter. Take a boat ride, rent a bicycle to explore the area, or simply relax on the shores and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere.

    Looks fabulous, I'm so jealous! Not being a skier, I never considered Japan in the winter. I have visited during the cherry blossom season, which was amazing, but will now consider a re-visit in winter! Great video!

    I'm planning to self drive from Sapporo to Abashiri in mid-March next year. Are there still snow and any advice about driving in the weather ? Thanks!

      Hey! Thanks so much, we are glad you enjoyed! We visited during February and there was a lot of snow around. It might be worth talking with the hotels for march time, I imagine there will still quite a bit of snow during March though :)
