The Pan America is a big, beefy bike and it needs a big, beefy skid plate to protect it. If you're going to take this bad boy off the beaten path, you better plate up!
Like many new bikes, the Harley-Davidson Pan America uses the motor as a "stressed member". The motor itself is an integral part of the motorcycle's chassis.
The Pan America has many components that would normally be mounted to frame work under the motor are attached to the motor itself (rear suspension linkage, side stand, skid plate etc). This creates a challenge when designing a skid plate to protect the underside of the motor from damage caused by rocks, stumps, logs etc. A skid plate can simply be mounted directly to the motor but the force from a solid impact is transferred into the engine case. This can cause a cracked engine case which can be a very expensive and lengthy repair.
The Camel ADV Gut Guard uses an impact absorbing subframe mounting plate to disperse the energy from large hits. Energy created when the bike collides with rocks roots, stumps etc, is distributed to all of the skid plate's mounting locations rather than just to the location of the hit. This distribution of force means the chances of damaging the engine case due a large hit is drastically reduced.
We've spent a lot of time designing and testing our Pan America Gut Guard skid plate to insure it'll take the abuse we know some of you will throw at it!

Just installed on my ‘22 Special.
Only advice is the round hole goes toward the rear of the bike on the intermediate plate. Will safe you a little bit of frustration if you read this. Watching the video it appears the round hole is front oriented…at least watching on my phone. Looks good and I am proud to have it !! Already ruined one stock plate .. a few BIG baby heads and a couple of ledges and it was toast!!

My Oilhead's skidplate was two-piece, but only 4 bolts that had a rubber donuts in the middle. I sheared off the donuts trying to climb a step and rode without gravel protection for a while.
That style is great for isolating load but not super durable from a shear standpoint.

Can the skid plate be installed on the center stand please? Nice, well thought out.
Is there a reason you chose not to use rubber spacers underneath, unlike the HD skid plate. Seems counterintuitive.
Can the demo skidplate be purchased at a deep discounted price because I'm on a tight budget and dents and dings add character in my opinion 🤔

Why not tack weld the spacers onto the intermediary plate at your shop?
The spacers are aluminum and the plate is stainless. Currently, we are not able to get stainless spacers at a reasonable price or on a reasonable timeline.

Pretty heavy but looks like it would better then the one Harley is offering . Might be adding it to my list . Already have Harley one on order but who know when it will come in
@@mrkihn There are lots of places to save weight in an ADV bike but IMO, the skid plate isn't one of them!
