- I love early to mid 80's vintage mountain bikes and I think you should too! They make for a great all around riding bikes from paved trails to urban to basic single track and everything inbetween.

My favourite bike is an '86 KHS Montana Crest I built up from the spare parts bin. Not much info about it, but it's yellow, lugged, cheaply constructed, and set up with some heavily swept cruiser bars (squarer and shorter than found on a beach cruiser), Kenda K-Rad 2.3" tyres on some wide single-wall eyeletted rims and some honking-great moto brake levers, probably Magura or at least a very authentic copy.
Brooks saddle and Oury grips for for hipster credit... It's just a really pleasant bike to cruise about on.
Currently I'm building a similar age Kuawahara Shasta with U brakes underneath, and the bike to follow is an '86 Jamis Cross Country, again with U brakes.
Such bikes are also quite fine for touring, although I often set them up with a 7 or 8 speed cassette hub in that case.
That said, we had very few mountain bikes here in New Zealand at the time, you'd have to wait for a tourist to leave one behind, or buy a mountain bike shaped object from a local manufacturer. It wasn't until the import laws changed that we finally saw some of the foreign brands really take off.
Well said mate.i own 1982 stumpjumper 1983 Ross mt hood 1984 Nishiki Kodiak 1985 Kynast Yeti 1986 Berma 1987-88 Atala Top 1 1989 Comp 2 1990 Viva pro and two 1990 Redlines plus a 1993 Koga Miyata.All original mostly nos parts .The best for me is the 1982 stumpjumper.Its my daily commuter.All these early are BEASTS..and i believe are the pic of evolution of lets say classic bicycles rigids lugged frames..its like using a motocross bike as an all arounder😂 they manage everything good enough...I love vintage mtbs❤❤❤ From Greece 52 years old
Yep, wider bars and relaxed geo make for the best riding bikes. I had to really thin my collection out for when I moved last year, but most of what I sold was either too small or just not the type of bike I'd ever enjoy riding more than a short distance.
My favorite bike to just jump on on go is my '87 Diamond Back Ascent EX. I do need another bullmoose bike in my life, though.

I liked the early nineties the best. It also helps that I lived in Denver for all of the nineties and could ride my bike off-road really easily and I didnt own a car. Where I live now there is only a few places like ten miles away and they actually kinda suck.

Dig the video! For me the range is pre front shocks. We have a few 1987 mountain bikes, a Fisher Montare, Schwinn Paramountain and Cimarron and they're awesome, do everything bikes. They all wear the same Blackburn rack so saddlebags are interchangeable. Also nice I can maintain them myself.
Those early Fisher Montares are great bikes.
@@GringineerCycles thanks! Yeah they're solid, one of them I'm the original owner from 1987. The Deore XT groupset is bombproof too.
I didn't know Raleigh used the name Grand Teton. My current project is an 88 Scott Teton.

What would you say are the main differences between 90s mtbs compared to these early to mid 80s? It’s a much more common phrase to go for 90s mtb, you don’t hear the 80s pitch as often!

They have a more up right relaxed geometry and longer wheelbases then the later 80s and early 90s frames that have lots more saddle drop and long stems that make for a more aggressive riding position. This relaxed geo makes early mid 80s bikes great for double track, town cruising etc.
Is velo schauff a good bike
I have an all original 24inch GT Bullet mountain bike. I can barely find any of on it. Had it since I got it in the 80s. Is it rare?

They have different hub spacing than 100/135 ?
Many of the mid 80s mtbs will be 130mm rear spacing. The fronts are still 100mm.
80s mtbs are very hard to find compared to early mid 90s mtbs
They can be harder to find then 90's bikes but at least in our area they are at least one or two on craigslist or the local Facebook pages most of the time.
