Thank you for watching our first video! We started our diet back in June 2018 with 2 weeks of nothing but plain potatoes, inspired by Penn Jillette's book Presto! During the two weeks of potatoes, we lost 45 pounds combined (25 for Brian & 20 for Jessica). Immediately following those two weeks, we switched to a whole food, plant-based diet. At the filming of this video (in February 2018), we had lost a total of 200 pounds combined. As of June 2019, we are up to 270 pounds lost (153 for Brian & 117 for Jessica). Check out our other videos for more about our weight loss journey, including recipes, reviews, tips & more! You're not crazy. I've lost 100 pounds by eating nothing but meat and eggs. (shrug) I began by eating nothing but bacon and eggs for almost a week because that's all I had in the house and I had to wait to go shopping. Whatever works, man.

Hey, congrats on your success so far! If I may suggest, you two should look up videos about macronutrients (the basic components of every food item-fat, carbs, protein). As someone who has lost weight, kept it off for over a decade, and tried several fad diets just for fun, I can tell you that understanding macronutrients is the only sustainable way to keep weight off without going crazy. Thinking about foods in terms of their macronutrient makeup is a basic framework for understanding any food you encounter and will save you a lot of the agony that comes along with following mindless fad diets (like eating nothing but potatoes for two weeks ;P). Anyways, hope that advice proves useful to you. Best of luck on your journey towards better health!

YES! Another potato video! Honestly, I did this potato diet too! I did it only for a week though before I lost my mind but I lost 13 lbs that I never gained back. Crazy thing is I was in a REALLY dark place when I decided to do the potato diet. I felt totally out of control and I just wanted to end my life. So I thought of all the things that made me feel powerless and then I realized the one thing I could 100% control was my weight / diet so I started right then and there to only eat potatoes. It worked! Maybe I should do it again. Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed this video!

I’m so sorry that you are goin through those feelings. I know they are externally difficult and painful. Please know you are not alone and that the feelings won’t last forever. Everyone’s circumstance is different and I know a potato diet won’t be the answer for everyone but at the end of the day it’s about claiming power over, even just one aspect of our lives. I know sometimes there is so much that is out of our control but we will always have at least one thing we can control, even if it’s just our mind. If you want to talk about what’s going on I’m here to lend an ear without judging or preaching, sometimes we also just need space to really process what’s happening in our lives. You can find me on FAcebook or Instagram as Athena Amoeba (athena_amoeba ON IG). You can send me a DM if you wanna talk about what’s going on. I’m here for you.

Hi guys. Responded to this video some time ago. I began to see my weight hitting the 290 pound mark. And was going broke buying new clothes that were the next size up, again and again. Well I tried the diet for about a week and just gave up. I was just using Russet potatoes because that's what I have been eating my whole life. Then saw other videos and saw that the Russet was not the only potato in the neighborhood. Tried Red and Golden and found that boiling them made them more desirable. Well began in earnest in early November last year. And now towards the end of February. I have dropped from 290 to 235!! I am still committed to continue and want to be able to get into suits I have not worn in years, BUT are back in fashion. I break diet every other week and have something I love. But thanks again for your help.

I think the point of a mono diet (in this case potatoes) is to take choice out of the picture and to put food back in the place of "fuel" where it should be, rather than a reward system. I had been living like this couple for 55 years and had completely given up on trying to "diet". I had tried EVERY diet known to man and even fasted for 21 days once to try to regain control of my overeating but aside from a couple of years where I was living on only steamed low fat veggies (no carbs) nothing worked. I was desperate. My legs had swollen up and I couldn't walk properly and I was just watching UA-cam videos because I couldn't move around much and saw a video about the spud fit guy. I live in Australia and so it struck a chord with me. I love potatoes and thought "what have I got to lose?" I started the very next day and that was back on February 27th this year. I have been doing this for 12 weeks (tomorrow) and within 2 weeks I was walking again, within 4 weeks I was taking the dog for walks on bush tracks. At 12 weeks I have lost 10kg (22lb) and walk every day. My knees are now absolutely fine. I bought an air fryer and make air fried "chips" (fries) with no oil. I don't eat salt but I do drink tea with soy milk in it. It was hard for the first week but after that it became a habit and I am due to finish eating only potatoes on May 27th (after 3 months). I can honestly say that I have never had this much energy. I wake up feeling positive now. I am going to keep eating potatoes but will adapt my diet to high carb, low fat (like this couple) and expect to keep eating this way for the rest of my life. To anyone saying how unhealthy it is to be only eating potatoes for a long period of time, the alternative was MUCH worse. I believe I have reset my bad eating habits and I now eat less than I used to because as much as I love potatoes, after months of them, they revert back to just being "food" and I now only eat when I am hungry. I would heartily recommend this to anyone who is desperate enough to want to completely change their lives as it worked amazingly for me and nothing, up until now, has done that. This is nothing short of a miracle for me and whether anyone else thinks its a good idea or not, I have been living it, and it worked. Simple facts folks. Congratulations to this couple for losing so much weight but it isn't all that hard to eat only potatoes when you are allowed to eat as many as you want to satiate your hunger and whenever you like. You soon regulate what you are eating and your body quickly learns that you aren't going to starve or overload it any more. Its a "reset" not a long term diet. People saying "that's not a healthy diet" are completely missing the point.

    • @KrocksInTheKitchen

I think we were in a similar place to you when we started. We had tried everything and this was the thing that FINALLY got us on track. I think for us the two weeks of nothing but plain potatoes got a bit dangerous because we couldn't eat without gagging the last few days. We only intended to do the two weeks from the start (like Penn did), but I have heard of people doing it for longer. It takes a lot of will power and dedication, so I commend you on that! It is inspiring to hear a story like yours, so thank you so much for sharing it with us here! In our follow up video to this one (about things we learned from doing this), we touched on people expressing their concern to us that this wasn't healthy. Totally agree that being as obese as we were was WAY less healthy than doing the two weeks of potatoes to help us reset. It did take us a few months to realize that the switch to a whole food, plant-based diet was a complete lifestyle change, not just a temporary "diet." People ask us all the time when we will eat "normal" food again... but we don't ever plan to go back!

      @stevefranpimblett8257 5 років тому +39

@@zenithlifestyle4841 I wasn't planning on living on them forever Zenith Lifestyle, I am breaking a half a century food addiction. The ONLY way to deal with food addiction is to get to the base of it. I have spent most of my life on a diet and nothing works and that's because I use food for comfort, a basic thing that I learned as a child. In order to put food back into the "nutrition" basket, I had to take it out of the equation and as you can't stop eating (lest you die) I had to find a way to do that that involved distancing myself from most foods. Potatoes are the healthiest food I could find that delivered the most nutrition for an extended period of time while I dealt with my shi* and it has worked magnificently. Eating the way I was eating before was NOT healthy. People constantly say "its not healthy to eat only potatoes" but lets face it, what most obese people eat prior to getting desperate enough to do something like this is killing them. Potatoes alone might result in a couple of deficiencies, and by the way, I do eat Sweet potatoes so no vitamin A deficiency for me and I have soy milk in tea (which is another half a century habit that I won't be giving up) so my B12 is catered for thanks so with those simple additions, I have been able to have tonnes of energy, lose weight all over, and sustain weight loss that has been healthy for my body. I believe this is much healthier than weight loss surgery or taking diet pills. We need to take back our addictions and own them. I did and the ball is now back in my court thanks to potatoes.

I had to rewatch this one. I'm going to start my two weeks of potato hell next weekend. I work in the food industry and it's the first of the month this week, so being stressed and irritable from tators isn't wise this week. I've come to the scary conclusion that I have a food addiction and just want a hard reset. I eat healthy 80% of the time, but I still eat CONSTANTLY and think of food non stop. It effects my relationships, job, energy level, and ability to accomplish my daily goals around the house. I'm the only person I know who eats the way I do and thinks of food non stop. Thank you guys for documenting your struggles with food and weight loss. You've been a real inspiration to me and you two are fun little nerdlets that I could totally hang with. I've lost 50 lbs so far and defeated Type 2 diabetes with the help of vlogers like you. Fingers crossed that I don't kill anyone over some tator madness! 😃

I mean, potatoes kept my whole country alive during a famine (obviously starvation killed us but note it was "starvation", those poor souls didn't even have spuds) so, ain't nothing wrong with the "potato diet" (speaking as an Irish person ain't nothing "new" about it either but, hey, no shade to folks who think it's a modern thing 🙃)
I could live on spuds but, tbh, I would need a sprinkle of salt from time to time and maybe a drop of plant milk for the mash but, I've had days where I've had potatoes for breakfast, potato salad for lunch and homemade chips (fries) for dinner out of choice. Happens on the regular actually, now that I think about it 🤷‍♀️
My Irish menu: potatoes and tea 😜😊

The breakdown makes 100% sense. You were in withdrawal. You're used to getting a dopamine hit every time you eat, and the potatoes don't give that as much. That's kinda the benefit of the mono-diet, but it's pretty harsh.

If you don't want a potato you don't have to eat it. Wait until you are hungry enough that a plain potato sounds marvelous. If we are considering a potato diet in the first place then we have plenty of excess body fat we can burn ( feed!) our bodies in the meantime. We don't need to eat. Or try a different kind of potato, golden, red, sweet, boiled or baked. I quite enjoy potatoes that are baked then chilled.

So if you need that many then by all means. You can also look into the Starch Solution my Dr. Mcdougall, it’s basically the potato diet but you can eat any carb, ie rice, bread, pasta, etc.

I am so proud of you guys for being able to stick to this! I didn't know the potato diet/challenge involved not adding anything to them! I was thinking this was going to be mashed potatoes, breakfast styles of potatoes, potato salads etc.
And I would've gotten anxious and angry too! Lol I totally understand flavors are like my happiness I usually prefer healthy food but I need to have flavorful healthy food lol and having just 1 type of thing after a while doesn't replenish certain nutritients that our body needs which can cause irritability and you may have had physical/emotional/pscychological addictions to foods you are before.

Thanks for writing Sheila! We learned so many things during (and after) these two weeks. Our lives were forever changed. We've been following the whole food, plant-based diet for 11 months now (ever since the 2 weeks of potatoes back in June 2018). We realized a few months in that this isn't a "diet" - it's a lifestyle change. We will never go back to eating the way we did before. We are so happy to have this platform to share our journey with others and show them that it's never too late to change. Brian has gone from 514 pounds to 367 so far, and I've gone from 285 to 172!
There are other potato "resets" that allow for more flexibility. I've read about McDougall's "Mary's Mini" and also Jeannine Elder's "The Potato Reset" and both seem a lot easier for people to follow. The plain potatoes is a little rough LOL, but we wanted to follow the same thing Penn Jillette did, so we stuck to it. Thanks again for the kind words.

I found you guys a couple weeks ago and felt very inspired. Started on Jan 1st with the potatoes, intending to continue with the Eat To Live lifestyle, too. Currently on day 10 of the potatoes, MANNNN. So many challenges I hadn't anticipated! How bad physically I would feel the whole first week, how I would gag at the thought of either potatoes OR water, how I would just sleep for hours on end bc then I wouldn't feel miserable... After the first week was done with, I actually started feeling so much better physically! Energy! No pain! No mood swings! Several lbs gone! Not that it suddenly became easier -- it didn't and in fact I have cheated several times, a cup of boiled buckwheat here, a cherry tomato there, a little piece of toast... But keeping up the whole thing by myself, and trying to manage the cravings (DREAMING of fruit and all kinds of savory food -- I would KILL for chicken soup right now!) has by far been the most complex part of it. You have mentioned this in another video I think, but doing this with a buddy just makes sense. Going at it alone is not for everyone. Definitely not for me. Thanks for the inspo, and I'll see you all on the other side of the potatoes!

I read something about what happens when we detox from unhealthy food from the Medical Medium (he writes about chronic illness etc). He says that when those toxins from the processed foods that you ate to stuff down emotions, leave your body, you experience the emotions that you stuffed down at that time. So all that emotion from times past comes out....no wonder you felt stressed, anxious and all, imagine all that detoxing from cutting everything processed all at once! And also the deprivation of a "drug" that processed food really is. It's a no brainer that you would feel awful.
I think it's awesome what you two have accomplished, and at that you are inspiring others, way to go!

I never have anxiety. Jessica has it all the time. 😀 So, potatoes triggering anxiety was a new experience for me. 😀

I don't have an overweight problem but I will follow your process as a motivation for other goals.
I think your are a lovely and smart couple with two adorable Pups . I really admire your strength and your great progress.
By the way, your voices, and the way you express yourselves is also pure inspiration. Blessings and a very happy and healthy 2020 !!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed your banter. Laughed out loud often. Best wishes on your journey.

St. Louis represent! Love seeing how far the two of you have come on your journey! My wife and I are actually getting ready to dive head first into potato hell as well and seeing your success is definitely an inspiration!
