  • Another pit cam! This time around, I’m playing the Harp book for Youngstown State University’s production of Once Upon a Mattress. Don’t mind the crazy video, it was originally an Instagram live.
For this book, since we don’t have someone who actually plays the harp, I was requested to make patches using MainStage. While the majority of the show is one instrument, why are there so many patch changes? The answer: some patches are a plain-old harp patch, while others contain programmed glissandos (using the SynthWorks plug-in), which is a lot easier on the fingers of a keyboardist playing this book. Other patches include a folk harp (lute), a delicate harp, a celeste, an organ (rhodes), and tube bells (we added the organ and tube bells). I am changing the patches using a pedal rather than an assigned key on the keyboard, making sudden patch changes much faster. I am also using my iPad as the display for MainStage, making it much easier to mount in a spot that is always in my peripheral vision.
If you find yourself in the same situation and need to program a harp MainStage file with glissando triggers (for any show!), don’t fret! Here is where I got the coding, which was generously published online for free!

P.S. Yes, the video and sound do start to go out of sync.
