HOW MUCH was our food? When did WETHERSPOONS become EXPENSIVE? Are SPOONS heading for BANKRUPTCY?

- Wetherspoons used to be a the place to go for a cheap pub meal and a cheap pint. It was renowned for how cheap it was, however as of late J D Wetherspoon has had price increases and also hit us with shrinkflation. This poses the question, are wetherspoons going to be the next high street name to disappear from our towns and cities? Let's find out as we go undercover in Wetherspoons and try out their menu.

I bumped into an old mate of mine today.
I said, "What are you doing these days?"
He said, "I prepare meals for the homeless, drug addicts, alcoholics and down and outs."
I said, "Oh, are you working for the Salvation Army?"
He said, "No. Wetherspoons!"
😂😂😂
Wow, even at those prices, that's cheap! A nice looking curry with a pint for under £11 is pretty darn good!
They would go bankrupt if they didn't raise their prices like everyone else does!
Try finding a traditional pub in the south that has a pint under £5 and a main meal for under £15, very few!
They have turned nearly £30 million profit this year so it would be stranged if they went bust. Also, you have to take in account the price of drinks, they are way cheaper than any pub I know. Having coke with a meal is personal choice but beer or wine is much, much better value. I can have Fish and chips for £11 and that includes a pint that would cost me £5.50 over the road. The next pint is £2.50 so it’s no contest for me. I wouldnt go to spoons for a night out, we go from work to save cooking. The best meal on the menu is probably lasagne, its as good as any high street Italian.
They won't go bust they can sell it if there making Millons of £ my local weather spoons pub bankers draft in Sheffield town centre are good
Many of the pubs Wetherspoon's close are leasehold, shrewd owner Tim Martin has a history of walking away when greedy landlords take the proverbial
I think the price was great £10 per head. You could go for coffee and sandwich for that!
Everything's gone up but if you put the cost of a pint you get with meal it's still incredible value.
When the wife and I where poor and living in Liverpool we used to go spoons and it wasn't that bad,but since we hit the big time and became rich and moved to covent garden in London we find the food so much better and quality is unbelievable, yet it's expensive 120 quid 4 four cocktails today an 500 for lunch fine dining obviously but we never forget our roots . lovely vlog 👍👍
❤
Wetherspoons won’t be going under anytime soon, they’re always packed out.
Food prices have gone up a bit, but that’s the same everywhere. And drinks are still as cheap as you can get in any pub
Was in there on Saturday evening. Place was rammed. Food was actually good. 2 meals with alcoholic drinks £20. No complaints 👍👍
For someone who hated it I didn't see too much left on the plate . If it was that bad why didn't you complain and get a new meal with no arguments in Wetherspoons , or get your money back once again no argument in Wetherspoons .
It's gone up but so has everywhere.
It's still cheap in comparison to everyone else, just not as cheap as it once was
Lee if there is no salt on your table then go to another table which is not occupied "
and take the salt off that one . That's what I do 🇬🇧 .
Unfortunately wetherspoons have to pass rising costs on to their customers just like any other company😮
Owners not nice thats it.
Wetherspoons have over 800 pubs and are selling 40. That's 5%
The prices have gone up , but tell me where they haven't.
We know the blonde angel doesn't like them, she would rather go to pubs that charge £1:50 for a dash of lemonade.
Brilliant value £21.47 can't see what there is to moan about . Also I'm not keen on your CLICK BAIT title ,that's a bit unfair on any business Lee .
Lol. 😂 I had no option on Brexit actually. I was living in USA at time. I'm not political and have no interest whatsoever in politics. Certainly not bias against British businesses either as I ran my own Graphic Design business for years. 👍🏼
Brilliant value for money? Did you see the onion rings and awful steak?
I would have sent it back and got a refund!! I don't go to wetherspoons anymore as the prices have gone up but the quality is just as bad..anytime I went in for a breakfast the food was cold, it happened in more then one wetherspoons and I will not pay good money for cold food in there ever again.
Prices have gone up everywhere. It’s still half the price of everywhere else. If you want quality go somewhere else. A 12oz sirloin in miller and carter is £35, a pint £6. Still get a pint in spoons for under £2.
Yes I agree its probably not quite as cheap as it used to be but nothing is and running that place certainly won't be ,utilities and overheads for everyone have risen and wait for the oil companies to reveal their profits with I expect will be astronomic and they will come out with some lame excuse which we all put up with but in reality that makes everything dearer
SO darn good to see AJ back with you as you are a great team...went to Wetherspoons today ,hadnt been for awhile, now i live in between 2 towns and the one i went to the one in Ipswich and the portions were smaller of fish portions ,didnt feel they had increased the price.....the food was still good n so was the service but things have changed!!Love to you both xx im glad i am veggie!!
❤❤
Gas and electricity increase has put all restaurant prices up.
Of course it has John, totally agree! Owning a chippy isn't great either, cooking oil increase, energy increase, cost of potatoes and fish increase... How my local chippy survives I don't know, he's the best locally & never really busy, I guess he's just ticking along without profit.. or very little?
Drinks are still cheap though 😊
Not really
My favourite pub, run by Amber Taverns is cheaper and the beer is better. Both on my High Street, so it's nothing to do with location
Drinks are cheap ,well stocked on so many drinks
@@xcrrushx6147still get a pint under £2??
Nowhere near as cheap as what they were.
Lee knows how to spoil a lady... take her to 'Spoons, will be taking notes!😂
😂❤
Loved your Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth, sound effects, when sawing your steak - made me laugh out loud! 😂
Still a good price tho . 2 meals inc steak and two drinks £21 good for a quick lunch
Still a good price tho ? Did you not see him sawwing through the steak?
Long live Spoons,always great value.
I had my most recent meal (lunch) in a Wetherspoons about 3 weeks ago, not one I had ever visited before, but we enjoyed it. It’s true prices have gone up a bit, but this chain still represents pretty good value I think. We ordered as we always do via their app and our drinks (soft) arrived within about 3 minutes & the food came about 4/5 minutes later, so we were ready to go in about 8/9 minutes from ordering. We also eat regularly (a couple of times a week or more, on average) in various other restaurants and cafés and prices there have risen quite a lot recently too. We generally now pay around £20 to £23 for two in Wetherspoons (up from maybe £18 or £19 a couple of years ago), in other restaurants it is now usually in the region of £60 to £70 for 2,although on one occasion recently it was around £115 for 2. Anyone who shops in supermarkets, most of us I imagine, knows how much prices have gone up there. Wetherspoons is doing not too badly in my view.
I was in a Wetherspoons yesterday it was a theme pub. The theme was poverty.
The last Wetherspoons i went to was in Blackpool and i got veggie burger, chips and a Guinness for £12 and the burger was so small I said to my cousin "are you sure they didn't get this burger from McDonald's and just put it on the plate".
18:59 another date going well people would start talking rumors about you guys 😅😅😅😅
Just good friends
😂😂 love a bit gossip keeps channel going
You cant beat a food stained weatherspoons menu... you just know you've arrived
I recently went to Inverness with hubby. In two cafes, we had 4 coffees, 2 very small biscuits and a piece of cake for a total of £22.15. For lunch we went to Wetherspoons. I had fish, chips and mushy peas and hubby had an 8oz sirloin steak with onion rings, mushrooms, tomato and chips ( we both had plenty of chips) and a glass of wine each. That all came to only £26 plus odd pence. The meals were good. We both said we can see now why people come to Wetherspoons. But how can 4 coffees et al come to £22 then? Ridiculous! There's something wrong somewhere!
Steak supplied by Dunlop tyres…..
So let's get this straight -
You have "shelled out" for an iPhone 15 pro and you drive an outrageously expensive electric car but somehow you are disturbed about the cost of a meal in Wetherspoons.
Seriously?
But the quality of Spoons meals are terrible so really he has every right to call out the price hike
Thanks for the comments though. Negative or Positive all helps the Algorithms. BTW. If something is cr#p like for instance electric cars and Wetherspoons meals I'll say it as it is. 🕶️👍🏼👍🏼🍺
well said Lee@@TheMacMaster
Lee is paying good money, maybe he has more than you or me, but that's irrelevant. You pay for a decent meal, that's what you should expect.
Maybe not Michelin star, but decent.
How can Wetherspoons be expensive? £2.06 for a pint of Doom Bar when it's over £6 in Cornwall! Ok, the food might have gone up, but what you save on the drinks more than makes up for it.
£6 in Cornwall for a Cornish beer! wow that is not bad, its crazy. Going to kill the tourist industry....
I answered with "Make me a winner" once. It was the AA recovery dude.
When he turned up he was a little bit odd.
I don't know whether it was something I said. That was an awkward journey.
What a lovely lady Ange is 😊
❤❤
I used to go in one near me, in Norwich, used to cost £5:30 for pint of Guinness and small fish & chips, less than a cost of Guinness in some other pubs near by it. now it is £9:87., with a lot of price rise this year.
Inflation is a lot higher than what we're told as food prices have gone up 50% since 2019 if you equate shrinkflation of the products.
My wife & I have given up on spoons much better quality in other pubs it's good for beer but that's all great to see Angie back again
❤❤
Well done for not turning around to watch Kier Starmers boring speech at 13 minutes
Next time order a pint of Sulfuric Acid to help break the steak down!
Funny😂😅
You went to wetherspoons not a steak house did you expect the steak to be out of this world? And as for wetherspoons going into liquidation NOT A CHANCE the other day they announced profits of over £80 million, ( Liquidation 🙄 Behave yourself Lee )
the steaks in spoons have never really been great.....but come on 10 quid, you aint gonna get excellent cordon bleu for that are ya? The breakfasts and brunches are still great value and nice enough. You get a brunch and a pint of pepsi for a fiver in Hereford spoons, and a brekkie for 3 quid! Try the chicken basket that is bloody brilliant too. And £2.69 for a pint of strongbow, its 4.50 in my nearest pub! And also the desserts you can get for 2 quid which are twice the size of most pubs who charge 6 quid these days. And not to mention the cappachinos, a quid for as many as you want......and its as good as costa coffee imo. Great to see blonde angie back too, and yes her curry is also great for the price. Spoons will never go under.
20 years ago, Wetherspoon's surloin steak was seriously good and big enough with loads of chips, tomato, onion rings across a large plate at 9.8 pounds and that with a pint of ale of your choice. Inflation is a plague none can escape.
Can't stop laughing, Lee was cutting into his steak and edited it with a saw effect. Lol
Great video Lee it’s the first time I have see a person having to cut rice 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️👏👏👍👍
❤
Knew I recognised this one! It's our local in Sherwood! Lovely site but those prices!! Eek!
For what its worth i like it when Paige ❤ and Ange are in the videos. Banter flies . On the spoons. Prices have gone up abit. But it is what it is. Hi Ange 👋
❤❤
Nice to see the Blonde angel back with you. I had a mixed grill in our local spoons and it came out looking like road kill, never again 😮😢
❤❤
Hi lee and welcome back angie looks like spoons has gone downhill. I liked the sound effect on sawing the steak angie got the best deal i gave hers a 7 too ❤❤
❤❤
Hi Angie lovely to see you back x😀
❤❤
Hey Lee. As a wetherspoons mystery diner for just over 5 years I agree with your statement in that prices have gone up quite a lot portion sizes have gone down and they've introduced a lot of 'cheaper' dishes. I used to order the large mixed grill a lot. For a long time this was £11.60 including an alcoholic drink (in London) but now it's getting close to £15 and in fact some wetherspoons have removed it!
Most of wetherspoons menu was priced under a £10 for a alcoholic drink and meal for years. Not sure now.
Don't get wetherspoons steaks anymore as they weren't great recently.
Shit is the word you're looking for 🙄
That was my go-to place to eat for years as I love that Welsh cider they have on but the quality has definitely gone down somewhat. Maybe it's costs and the fast turnaround of staff who don't have the training to learn the ropes, I don't know. I think it might be an age thing, Young people don't go into pubs anymore so rival venues are all turning into gastropubs with better food and on-par prices so they are suffering. I'd like to hear people's opinions on this.
The Saw sounds & Twenty minutes later was a CLASSIC!
Should have gone for the Steak and Kidney Pud with Chips and Musheys, yummy 😋
Mister Macmaster long live Spoons! Might not be everyone's cuppa tea & yeah price increases but what's not gone up & STILL increasing in price 😮😮 The return of Ange long overdue & she certainly looks very well too ..good to see The Blonde angel 😇 ❤
Unfortunately spoons like everywhere else are paying more for goods so the punters get to pay more Nice to see blonde angel again
Hello Angie so lovely to see you and Lee back together on food reviews again loved the video ❤
❤❤
I'm worried boys and girls, I'm worried that M is turning into an old skinflint. £21 is a good price for 2 cheap meals and 2 drinks. Plenty of pubs will charge you that for one plate of mediocre fish and chips with a pint. Much as it pains me to point out the rules to a man of the world such as Himself it seems that I must. The food at W is all precooked off site and just heated up in the pub kitchen. Experienced diners only ever order something that will not be damaged by being twice cooked and steak is not one of those things. Anyone silly enough to order steak from W deserves every aching jaw muscle that they suffer. Curry was a much better choice.
Perhaps M is still dreaming dreams of tapas missed.
Been an advocate of Wethos for many years and tend to hunt for them when travelling to away fixtures.
There is no doubt however that over the last 12 months the quality and portion sizes have got conspicuously poorer and smaller.
The only saving grace is the beer prices ( not in London though)
Spoons are very far from being in trouble. Currently doing lots of multi million pound refurbishments of pubs. I think you might be the reason why they shut that Mansfield one after your review! 😂 Personally I find them to still be excellent value for money, not many places around where prices haven’t gone up this year
Gone up, yes, but Spoons have gone up by 22.5% on a lot of stuff
Hi Lee of course but great to see the fabulous Blonde Angel back!! Hope Nick is doing good Ange.
He is getting there xx
@@theblondeangel9987 really hope so, please look after yourself Ange.
Small chips side is £2:50 and large is £4:50, That’s £7 in total for 3 potatoes cut into slices and fried,
It’s nice to see Lee the macmaster and the blond angel together again 😊and lee yes I agree with you about the steak it looked tough to eat aswell
❤❤
That piece of rough steak must have staggered in the back door and collapsed onto the plate - they should be embarrassed selling anything as bad as that.
It looks like shrivelled up road kill🥴
Didn't look like Sirloin to me
The thing about shrinkflation is that it simply isn't sustainable. If they keep shrinking the size of chocolate bars for example, how small will they be in 20 years? Microscopic.
You’re right, the prices have certainly gone up & I believe that there are many other places that offer equal if not better value for money, we’ll certainly up here in Wrexham.
Only ever been into a weatherspoons twice.
Both times they forgot our order, and weren’t even bothered about apologising.
Those instances were over ten years ago and I’ve never been in one since.
If they went out of business tomorrow I wouldn’t lose any sleep.
Its great to see the duo back together. The Blonde Angel is great.
❤❤
I havent watched the channel in quite a bit and good to see you and ang still at it! Love a weekend lunchtime kinda vid out with you both! Try some local carveries for a Sunday roast! I've recently got into me carveries, normally well worth the price
My spoons in Edinburgh £4.77 for a, lager. And I've noticed its empty in there. Today Saturday dozen in.. I reckon youre right Lee 😢
How does that compare to other pubs in Edinburgh? It's been a few years since I've been but it's regarded as an expensive city, just like London and York for example but depending on what you drink, £4.77 seems a lot for a lager in wetherspoons.
Probably still cheaper than burger king and McDonald's these days
Loved the wood sawing and swallowing sound effects🤣Brill👍👍
Nice to have someone with you and looks like 10 of 10 all day and hope that cost not too much.
£1 cheap frozen microwave meals and pay £7 to reheat it in a microwave totally shocking why do people go to these places for food can't beat a home made food from a old fashioned pub with lots of history
Easy answer the prices not all of us can afford those posh pubs
The fallen Angel returns! I don't think they will go into liquidation but costs are going up and we are all feeling the pinch...I just stay in now as I can't afford the £5 a cider my local started charging. I went to Sainsbury's to get a salad today, I usually pay 1.50 but it's gone up to £4, it's crazy. I'll be eating value beans on toast at this rate for the rest of my life ha.
❤❤
As a family of four now, Wetherspoons now costs us £40 for a meal and drinks
Not super cheap any more.
Yep we missed the blonde angel, prices unfortunately will go up because of cost of living but you do get a free drink with all of the meals, curry looks nice , food looks good
❤❤
Hi Lee Yes I agree Wetherspoons has increased its prices slightly But most places have From a personal prospective it’s still quite good value. £21 for two people isn’t bad 2 meals and drinks too isn’t that bad. Also I personally wouldn’t buy a steak meal from somewhere like spoons. Yeah you could probably sole your shoes with it. Always go to a decent Restaurant for steak. Anyway all the best I always enjoy your vlogs keep em coming. 😊👍
12 x chips. 3127 x grains of rice.
Mmmm. Spoons is known for cheap & cheerful, you can pay about 3x the cost anywhere else for a similar meal with drink. My tip there, if you want a nice steak, it needs to be cooked with care and attention, you won't get that in spoons and the like.
only went to Weatherspoon's once may moons ago and that was enough if my memory serves me well, i ordered chicken Kiev it was frozen in the middle enough said pay cheap get cheap!
A whiskey and coke for £1.77 pints for £2. Steak chips and drink under a tenner. Whoever says they are getting dear needs their head looked at. Must be giving away too many ribeyes at the local food bank.
Welcome back Angel, you were sorely missed!
❤❤
Currently watching while eating fish n chips with coleslaw
Stopped going in when they got rid of Strongy. They don't cater for drinkers anymore even though the 9 o'clock crowd was the biggest spenders.
still the cheapest for drinks, that is all i go in there for.
On your new camera Lee..
I see a slight frame jump especially on video of menue and signs, is the frame rate set correctly ??
Video on the two of you is soft and warm (portrait mode ??) Nice though 👌...
I've not got to the food yet 😮😊
Had to drop the frame rate as it was dark in there. :0)
Lighting not the best.
So good to see Ange the break has done her well good looking well refreshed 😊
❤❤
Some prices have gone up Lee used to get 3 small plates for £9.99, but notice its £14.93 in the video....Have a few Spoonz in the Halifax/Huddersfields area....and they are not often quiet!!....Used to go Thursdays but now so busy we go Tuesday.
Don't think they'll be going bust anytime soon.
Can't beat their curries for value...
P.S The steaks aren't as good as they used to be....LOL
Great video lovely to see Angie back she is always fun
❤❤
That Wetherspoons looks quiet nice. The local one to me has the track suit gang and smack heads hanging around the place. Andover.
Welcome back Angie 😊
❤❤
It’s not to bad I think harvester has got very dear 😮
before we go any further.just take a closer look my friends.
Just been to spoons today and had a curry. It was very good. Better and cheaper than the takeaway Indian Joint. That's how I found it. Wife Loved it as well . She is fussy an ex chef. Spoons tend to sell off a few pubs for further investment. That's how they work on the advice of their accountants. I use to be a contractor to them and that's how they work. Most successful pub group ever known.
Love this love you guys xxxx
❤❤
Looking forward to the video mate. Onwards my friends let's go
What a charmer Lee treating the ladies to a meal in Spoons.😀
Yeah, I thinl Wetherspoons has had it's day, the one in my home town in Cheshire closed down last year some time. Remember a friend saying a few weeks before they closed that "the Bloody Prices ave gone up though".
“Paying the old fashioned way” is with cash. Cash is king, use it or lose it!
2 poppadums and not 1! Ooooh Ambassador you are really spoiling us
😂
Not a big fan of Spoons but portions seemed good and food represents reasonable VFM.
Hope the company survives and improves its treatment of its staff.
